Open Game Thread: WSU at Oregon State
Washington St. Cougars at Oregon St. Beavers, Oct 11, 2008 3:30 PM PDT
The key to this game will be finding out if last week's run defense was a mirage or a true resurgence. It's hard to believe that we stand much of a chance of stopping Jacquizz Rodgers after what OSU did to USC's front seven, but as Building the Dam said, that had a little bit of a "perfect storm" feel to it.
Even if we are able to contain Rodgers, as Utah did last week, we'll be selling out to do it. That will leave us to get beat by the arm of Lyle Moevao, and after what Kevin Craft did to our soft coverage last week, I have a hard time believing things won't get even uglier against the Pac-10's top passer.
Offensively, the key will be the line. OSU's defense is very aggressive, and plays better at home than on the road. The Cougs have weapons of offense, but they rarely have an opportunity to shine. Can the offensive line, which is starting the same unit for the third week in a row (FINALLY), open some holes and give Lobbestael some time? Or will it give up a couple of early sacks or tackles for loss and let the crowd get into it? If we can get the latter, we've got a fighting chance to score some points today.
Can we beat OSU? Who knows -- stranger things have happened. I wouldn't bet on it, but that's what they said about Stanford and USC last year ...

Originally I was going to live blog this
…but really it’s better and (possibly) more interactive to just type my thoughts here in the comments
A "highly prolific WSU defense" per Gesser
…and a dancing girl sighting. Does WSU comp her tickets or something?
Wow FSN taught me something I didn't know
Wulff was the coach when EWU nearly beat the Beavs at Reser (21-19)
I thought we had a new offensive coordinator
…and yet “pitch outside” is still one of our favorite running plays
3rd string QB, 3rd string RB
Could this be the game our scoring streak ends? [Staden falls down in the open field]
Another question
Of all the times to blitz, why on 3rd and 12? Play straight up and make a tackle and odds are you don’t give it up.
Your announcers today
Todd Mansfield, Steve Preece, Jason Gesser, Cathy Marshall
Possibly the worst team in the history of sports announcing.
In fact, we should have this team, not the Beavers, play the Cougs. More competitive.
They are definitely setting a record
For most misuse of “well” and “good” in one quarter of play. Gesser might be doing that alone actually.
It's really bad that it has come to this
but I think most Coug fans go into each game just hoping for 3 points so we can get through this season with the scoring streak intact. Beavs going in for another 7.
True, luckily we have a kicker that can hit a long field goal
Could’ve a used that in ’05 when peanut was consistently missing extra points

Kooyman drops quizz for no gain
It’s sad how excited I am when whenever something awful doesn’t happen
Sadly
The game is not as close as the score looks.

He's looking a lot better than the past weeks
and what was that last play?
by Craig Powers on Oct 11, 2008 4:20 PM PDT up reply actions
A designed QB draw?
I think ocho rojo is going to take enough hits today – no reason to ask for more
I think Paul Greengrass is directing the USC press conference
camera is shaking all over the place on espnews
The main problem today is...
The Beavs have just displayed more swagginess than we have. It’s not about talent or coaching, it’s swagginess.
So, I flew through the first quarter on my DVR because I got home late
And I’ve come to the conclusion that Lobbestael doesn’t have a chance, thanks to our offensive line. Do you realize we’re regularly keeping seven guys in to block four defensive linemen on passing downs? That means we’re sending three guys into the pattern … with seven defensive backs covering them. No chance whatsoever to get someone open, no matter who is out there running routes.
Just as the d-line is the source of the problem on defense, the o-line is the source of the problem on offense.
CF.C or Cougzone said we are possibly going to offer a scholie to a kicker
I can’t say I disagree with that after the past five years of crappy kicking
by Craig Powers on Oct 11, 2008 4:45 PM PDT up reply actions
Why not go after a top 10 kicker
and say “you can have the starting job for four years if you want it”. That’s what I’d like to see.
If we can get into second- and third-and-manageable
we’ve give Lobbestael a chance. But man, those third-and-longs are just killers, because our offensive line can’t block four guys.
By the way, remember that the TD came after a turnover
Those things are important! We sure haven’t gotten many of them this year, and it makes a difference. We are now +2 in turnovers in this game.
That used to be our bread and butter
YES pick for six!!!!!
by Craig Powers on Oct 11, 2008 4:48 PM PDT up reply actions
Yeah, but it was all because of the pressure
No pressure, he sees that guy jumping the route. I think OSU got a little big for their britches.
Ugh
We never have time to celebrate anything

Yeah I would love to be interested at the end of the game
I miss that
by Craig Powers on Oct 11, 2008 4:58 PM PDT up reply actions
That's how far we've fallen
That we’re just hoping that we’re still interested by the fourth quarter. Yeesh.
Dropped!
Silly beavers, always playing to their opponents.
How much time can you waste in a 2 minute drill??
What's the spread against USC next week going to be?
more than 41? (Stanford last year)
by Craig Powers on Oct 11, 2008 5:03 PM PDT up reply actions
According to Moore's article today
… it could be at least 40. After today we might get a little more respect. Hope for snow.
Remember four years ago
When it rained, hailed, and snowed all before the USC game. Then two of the worst kickoff plays in college football history and it was 14-0 before we could blink
by Craig Powers on Oct 11, 2008 5:07 PM PDT up reply actions
It's a shame though
I still feel like we’re clearly the inferior team in this game. Moevao’s awfulness and OSU dropped passes have kept us in the game
No doubt
We are clearly a step down in talent
by Craig Powers on Oct 11, 2008 5:03 PM PDT up reply actions
I disagree to an extent
Yes, we’re inferior. But I’ve felt all along this year that our talent just isn’t THAT much below everyone else’s. I have felt for a while that we weren’t playing up to our potential — just out of sync. I think you’ve seen a team wake up and realize it can compete. It’s almost like ever since that Cal game, we’ve just had this thing in our heads that we can’t compete. It’s amazing what a few breaks can do for your confidence.
And don’t forget — we’ve made our breaks this game. Yes, Moevao has not been good, but those are plays we didn’t make earlier this year. We’ve dove to catch two INTs, and the pick six was the result of a great read brought about by great pressure. Yes, we were gashed early, but we’ve been pretty darn good since.
Yes we have improved
but to me it still seems like our players are a step slower
by Craig Powers on Oct 11, 2008 5:08 PM PDT up reply actions
You're right
Thats probably why we’ve been able to capitalize on opportunities for TOs
by Craig Powers on Oct 11, 2008 5:10 PM PDT up reply actions
I've decided Michigan is our sister team
New coach…lots of issues on both sides of the ball… a new offensive system that our team hasn’t bought into.
Michigan has more talent coming in, so they have more wins. But 2-4 at Mich is the equivalent of 1-5 for us in the eyes of their fans.
They lost to Toledo
I think that would have been the equivalent of us losing to PSU
by Craig Powers on Oct 11, 2008 5:09 PM PDT up reply actions
Yeah, I was pretty pissed when they couldn't get HD out to Corvallis
Pullman I sort of understand. But that’s the Pac-10 and FSN at its finest — can’t even get all its games in HD. What a joke.
How about the Pac-10 today!
Arizona State — still a fraud
Arizona — still one of the worst coached teams in the conference, getting caught looking past Stanford.
I hate Arizona
I don’t know why but I just do. i think it come from 4 years ago and the miracle fumble game when he whined and bitched the whole game
by Craig Powers on Oct 11, 2008 5:13 PM PDT up reply actions
I loved that game
it always seems like the teams I’m rooting for are on the other end of those types of games
I remember screaming like a little girl
when the ball popped up in the air. Stupid stoops, take a knee!
by Craig Powers on Oct 11, 2008 5:18 PM PDT up reply actions
Then we blew a 17 point lead to Oregon the next week
and that is how we arrived at where we are today
by Craig Powers on Oct 11, 2008 5:21 PM PDT up reply actions
Right when I jump off the stanford bandwagon
they come up with a win. of course. at least I was right about AZ being overrated
How many rushing yards did Stanford have?
That was the part of their defense I was most skeptical about.
Wow
Stanford has 3 pac 10 wins, only two more for a bowl game. just wow
by Craig Powers on Oct 11, 2008 5:15 PM PDT up reply actions
It's amazing what you can do, running the ball and not turning it over
Ball control covers a multitude of inadequacies. Had Pritchard not thrown three INTs last week, they very well should have beaten ND.
You know they were only allowing 218 total ypg heading into today?
Just shows you how weak the competition has been. By the way, Stanford was Corso’s “upset special” this morning, if you can count this an upset.
Let's leave ESPN out of this
They have pretty much put together a collectively annoying group of announcers and analysts. I can’t watch any of their shows anymore.
by Craig Powers on Oct 11, 2008 5:17 PM PDT up reply actions
What, you don't like to watch people sit and yell at each other all day?
I actually do like the morning college show — I think it’s the best of the bunch in terms of their specialized shows. Corso is a clown, but Fowler and Herbstreit really know their stuff.
Fowler and Herbstreit are the best they have
but that is early for a Saturday! I just try and get a glimpse of the flag
by Craig Powers on Oct 11, 2008 5:20 PM PDT up reply actions
I watch for the Coug flag
what’s with Corso pissing off the home crowd lately? if he put on a Husky head at WSU I guarantee he’d be hit with a water bottle
Yeah, so you know how long you have to change to another channel before changing it back
From an ad sales perspective, it’s actually rather moronic.
Haha
I was typing that post too! fantastic
by Craig Powers on Oct 11, 2008 5:15 PM PDT up reply actions
But it's great for the fan
So I won’t complain. But I wonder who the heck works at that place that thought that was a great idea.
Angie Mentink has a good grasp on technology
such as moving cameras and equipment to Pullman… I’d check with her
That is unbelievable
And when I say unbelievable, I mean it in the literal sense, not the hyperbolic sense.
Watch any college football game
you will find out that unbelievable things happen every game. it’s really unbelievable
If you were to tell me that a kicking team
Could kick the ball out of bounds AND get a late hit where it happened, I would tell you that I would not believe it.
Great play! Three and out!
Our D just looks like it finally believes. I’m not saying it means we’ll shut out OSU the rest of the way, but we’re doing things right now we haven’t done all year.
And they are going in to take away our hopes
terrible spot
by Craig Powers on Oct 11, 2008 5:31 PM PDT up reply actions
I will always believe that they are worst in the nation
whenever they do a bowl game and its on national tv it is so embarassing
by Craig Powers on Oct 11, 2008 5:32 PM PDT up reply actions
I'm not sure if it's there, but my favorite
is the one where they’re like, “Your company only gives you $8 a day for food per diem.” and then it says, “But you lost 15 pounds on your trip!” And then it launches into that “La la la!” Song. Too funny.
Would we expect anything less?
It started with the Karstetter 15 yarder against Okla st and hasnt stopped
by Craig Powers on Oct 11, 2008 5:38 PM PDT up reply actions
Plays like that are not awesome
Plays like that come from a guy who’s always been able to get by on his athleticism and clearly hasn’t worked real hard on the craft. Gibson takes that pass for a mile.
Key to beating our pass defense
1. look for #10 or #9
2. throw the ball at the receiver being covered by either one
Key for our pass defense
1. Just run the ball right up the middle
2. Enjoy scored touchdowns

Can I even do a top 10 plays of the year for football?
I’ve got:
-The INT returned for a TD
-Lobster to Jeshua against PSU
anything else?
Seriously, we don't need any help losing
This feels like the beginning of that Oregon game. Yes, we’re not very good … but c’mon. How can these guys screw up so many calls? It boggles the mind.
Actually, I know how they can screw up so many calls. There is ZERO accountability in the Pac-10 with their officials. That’s why the NFL is so good with its officials. When guys screw up, they pay. Not in the Pac-10. No matter how bad they screw up, you always see the same jackasses out there every Saturday, as the chief of officials comes out in the media and says, “They called it right!”
Just once, I want to see them go the NFL route and be honest. Come out, like after the UW/BYU game, and say, “You know, he might have called it by the letter of the rule, but that was an inappropriate application. The official will be disciplined.” But, again, it will never happen as long as Hansen is around.
Exactly.
UW/BYU was a chance to say “we blew it and misinterpreted that rule”. And of course… they defended the refs
Let's not forget about Oregon and Oklahoma
We showed on a national stage how terrible our refs are

Back to the Mansfield bashing
It was the end of the 3rd quarter and he thought it was a WSU timeout. Who decides to hire these guys? Is FSN really that hard up?

by Craig Powers on Oct 11, 2008 6:47 PM PDT up reply actions
There should be a law
against announcers ever saying a sentence with the phrase “in the nation” during a broadcast. Don’t give me that. OSU is not the most balanced offense in the nation. Penn State — you know, the team that killed OSU — so much better and more balanced. I know the game is out of hand, but you don’t need to make yourself sound dumber with gross overgeneralizations.
It is seriously so hard to write about this team
I mean, I thought about doing other kinds of posts, like “3 Keys to beating _______” or “How to stop _________,” but really, how retarded would that be? So, we write 1 or 2 posts a week, and call it good. Because, like I have said in the past, there are only so many ways you can write “we suck.”
I guess we should have Tony Bennett coach the football team
We could atleast hold teams to 55
