Game Thread: California at Washington State

California Golden Bears at Washington St. Cougars, Sep 6, 2008 3:30 PM PDT

Jahvid_medium

via 2.bp.blogspot.com

Kickoff: 3:30 PT

Location: Martin Stadium, Pullman

TV: Fox Sports Northwest (Gess who's announcing?)

The line: California by 13 1/2

Why the Golden Bears might win:  Jahvid Best (above). He was the 2007 California high school state champion in the 100-meter dash. His time: 10.31 seconds. So it's safe to say he's fast. There's also the 7.6 yards per carry he averaged on his 29 carries last season.

Why the Cougars might win: Nuss said it best earlier in the week. One of the pleasant surprises last week was how the Cougar defensive line handled one of the best o-lines we will see all season in Oklahoma State. Now, with a (hopefully) monster game against Cal, they can stop the Bears' running game or at the very least prevent the floodgates from opening.

X-Factor: The D-Line. Not only for the ability to slow the run game, but also the chance that we could force Cal to beat themselves. Pressure on the quarterback, if we can get it, could lead to sacks, interceptions and a whole bunch of other fun things. Let's hope for the best.

The Prediction: I don't think the Cougs have enough offense to keep up with Cal. I do, however, think they can keep it reasonably close. Cal 31, WSU 21.

Pac-10 officials strike again

I don’t like Washington. I really don’t. But I seriously can’t believe that game was decided by an unsportsmanlike penalty. That was beyond terrible.

KICKOFF TIME!

Let’s go Cougs!

A touchback is a nice way to start.

by Jeff Nusser on Sep 6, 2008 3:44 PM PDT reply actions

Uh, so maybe I was wrong about containing Best

The D-Line got absolutely cleaned out on that play. Uh-oh.

by Jeff Nusser on Sep 6, 2008 3:47 PM PDT reply actions

Um, this could be a short game

I’m really not sure what Rogers was thinking there.

by Jeff Nusser on Sep 6, 2008 3:49 PM PDT reply actions

OK, so mistakes we've made so far

1. Lost contain on a running play for a TD.
2. Thrown a terrible interception.
3. Blown coverage for a TD.
4. Fumbled a kickoff.
5. Fumbled a snap.

Wow. We truly suck so far. The good news? Brandon Gibson caught his first two passes …

by Jeff Nusser on Sep 6, 2008 3:56 PM PDT reply actions

hey, second non-nuss comment

how y’all doing? hope we don’t embarrass you too badly.

So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!

by ragnarok on Sep 6, 2008 4:02 PM PDT reply actions

I'm pretty sure

there’s no prayer of that at this point.

The thread over there is freaking out for me. Just wanted to say I think the annonucers said Alex mack was Kevin Mack. Nice spin move by Vereen!

I just can't believe

this is the same team I watched last week. The mistakes are unbelievable to me. I just did not expect this — not that I truly thought we could stop your backs, but I did not imagine this.

by Jeff Nusser on Sep 6, 2008 4:05 PM PDT up reply actions

Nice run

little life there.

Cal special teams need a little work

Uh Oh

I remember reading about Little Big Horn but never thought I’d actually witness a re-enactment.

by I Remember Richie Zisk on Sep 6, 2008 4:07 PM PDT reply actions

Remember

At little Big Horn, Custer was favored. But in terms of the slaughter part, it’s a good analogy.

by Jeff Nusser on Sep 6, 2008 4:09 PM PDT up reply actions

Jeff, it’s me (Chris) in Wenatchee.

by I Remember Richie Zisk on Sep 6, 2008 4:10 PM PDT reply actions

Hey!

Nice handle. That’s quality.

by Jeff Nusser on Sep 6, 2008 4:12 PM PDT up reply actions

I know you commented on the UW game (a tragically unsatisfying finish to such a thoroughly enjoyable game), but did you see Oregon’s score? 66!

by I Remember Richie Zisk on Sep 6, 2008 4:14 PM PDT reply actions

At least our special teams are WAY better

Now if the offense and defense could catch up, please.

by Jeff Nusser on Sep 6, 2008 4:17 PM PDT reply actions

How about Frischknecht?

How about the fact that I think I spelled it right?

by Jeff Nusser on Sep 6, 2008 4:26 PM PDT reply actions

Wow, keep your heads high, guys. This is an unusual game for you guys and believe me we were there back in the Holmoecaust.

the only good thing that can come out of this season is if we are so bad they fire Wulff and hire a real coach

by cstatton on Sep 6, 2008 4:34 PM PDT reply actions

is wulff that bad?

hard to judge from 1 1/2 games…

So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!

by ragnarok on Sep 6, 2008 4:36 PM PDT up reply actions

He's not

I’m totally convinced he’s the right guy for this.

What you don’t know about my buddy Statton is that he doesn’t like anyone. Not even me.

:-)

by Jeff Nusser on Sep 6, 2008 4:37 PM PDT up reply actions

I blame doba, I was not a fan of the hire, and never will be a fan of the hire, anybody that is endorsed by Jim Walden publicly should not be hired

by cstatton on Sep 6, 2008 4:36 PM PDT reply actions

Who would like to hire?

I’ll bet Ty Willingham will be available!

by Jeff Nusser on Sep 6, 2008 4:39 PM PDT up reply actions

I would rather hire some hot shot o-cord or d-cord that has decint recruiting pipelines that will be hungry to turn it around so he can head to the bigger job, then you can hire a guy who has spent 15yrs at Eastern recruiting the NW

by cstatton on Sep 6, 2008 4:41 PM PDT up reply actions

We have a punter.... again

the bright spot so far is that we have our starting punter back, no more 15 yd punts

by cstatton on Sep 6, 2008 4:39 PM PDT reply actions

ore st and port st

by cstatton on Sep 6, 2008 4:45 PM PDT reply actions

Seriously?

A 30-yard TD on a busted play? I’m going to go kill myself now.

by Jeff Nusser on Sep 6, 2008 4:50 PM PDT reply actions

Portland State

I’ve got money on PSU to win with Bradey

by cstatton on Sep 6, 2008 4:53 PM PDT reply actions

Too bad Xavier Hicks didn’t put rubbing alcohol in my contact case so I couldn’t witness this crap

by cstatton on Sep 6, 2008 4:53 PM PDT reply actions

At least you guys don’t have stinky assholes who have been camping outside of the stadium and in the trees outside of your stadium for the past two years.

by Itchy25 on Sep 6, 2008 4:57 PM PDT reply actions

I have a stinky asshole.

True

Our stinky assholes play for our football team, though.

QB CONTROVERSY!

Perhaps Gary Rogers could never get past Alex Brink because he actually isn’t any good?

Remember, Gesser started it.

by Jeff Nusser on Sep 6, 2008 5:06 PM PDT reply actions

Was Gesser the QB directly before Brink?

do you have other promising qbs?

playing a 5th year senior in a rebuilding year might not be the best idea.

(says the guy who knows next to nothing about your program)

So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!

by ragnarok on Sep 6, 2008 5:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, there's Lopina

He’s a junior. Never seen him play, but I guess he’s a bit more mobile. Rogers is the kind of quarterback fit for the old system — big, strong armed.

by Jeff Nusser on Sep 6, 2008 5:30 PM PDT up reply actions

Not really.

Kevin Lopina will be a senior next year. My guess is that he will be the starter

by Combs on Sep 6, 2008 5:30 PM PDT up reply actions

Does Gary Rogers

EVER look to his second receiver? Ever?

by Jeff Nusser on Sep 6, 2008 5:33 PM PDT up reply actions

Looks like

I’m getting sent on another errand. Grrr

by I Remember Richie Zisk on Sep 6, 2008 6:26 PM PDT reply actions

Yep

Looks like I have to sign off. I’ll chat with you later, Nuss.

by I Remember Richie Zisk on Sep 6, 2008 6:28 PM PDT reply actions

Maybe you will get more people on this thread for road games...

I was at this debacle for the entire thing… very disappointing… but true fans don’t just leave…
