Pac 10 basketball slowing down
Basketball Prospectus has an article up about the Pac 10 becoming the slowest major conference in basketball. It's not just Bennett-Ball anymore - OSU, USC, ASU and UCLA all join us as teams averaging less than 60 possessions per game.
The article is mostly in fun, though the author does point out that recruits may not be so excited to join us out west if this trend continues!

You know, I was thinking about this today
But it doesn’t seem to be stopping UCLA from getting great recruits year after year. As long as you keep putting guys in the NBA, players will want to come to your program.
NBA scouts aren't stupid
They don’t just look at raw stats. Otherwise guys like Tyrus Thomas (the guy from LSU, that was his name right?) wouldn’t go in the top 5. And Kyle Weaver would have never gotten a second look.
Maybe the scouts aren't stupid
But the Coach’s and player’s sure do look stupid. Has anyone tried to watch an NBA game recently? I can’t even stomach it. It isn’t even basketball anymore.
It hasn't been for a while
And I haven’t watched it for a while. I finally figured out why it’s so ugly: The 24-second shot clock. Do you realize how little time that is? You’ve got one shot at an effective set, and that’s it. If you don’t get a good shot there, someone has to put it on the floor one-on-one or jack up a shot.
That short shot clock is the root of it all — you’re so limited in terms of what you have time to do, it’s virtually eliminated creativity from sets. Every team runs the same sets because that’s all you can do. Teams simply can’t be patient and play the game it was meant to be played.
By the way, I'm not criticizing the NBA
If that’s the way they want their game to look, that’s their business. If you like it, more power to you. I just can’t watch the stuff.
I agree the NBA is gross
Any interest I had in it before left with the Sonics.

I began to really dislike the NBA 5 years ago
Then the Sonics were stolen, and David Stern again showed his true colors. Now I can’t stomach the thought of Kyle Weaver having to play there. But on the brighter side, I have been introduced to a far better winter sport full of guys who actually play hard every game- Hockey. Great stuff.
I would take an NHL franchise over another NBA franchise in a heartbeat
There is just nothing like hockey at the highest level.
Do you really think Hockey at the highest level is better than Soccer at it's highest level?
I think about 90% of the planet would disagree with you on that one.
I'm not giving my opinion or anything...
But it’s quite possible that more than 75% of our own country might disagree with you on that one… And we live in America where many people are simply veiled to the intricacies of soccer.
People who watch an NHL game live end up hooked
There’s a reason the league has been able to survive, despite not having a major network contract. It develops hardcore local followings because it is so freaking awesome.
Just because 75 percent of our country doesn’t understand its awesomeness doesn’t make it not so.
I have never seen an NHL game live.
That’s something to put on the ‘to do list’. Although, I have seen semi-pro hockey games live. They were fun. But I don’t remember anything about them which made them particularly memorable.
It's not even close
I love the Seattle Thunderbirds — I’m going to a game on Saturday — but it’s like comparing the NFL to high school football. The difference in athleticism, talent and skill is that dramatic.
Some of them actually are high schoolers!
My friend has season tickets behind the opposing team’s bench and it is just crazy to see how young some of the players look.

Yeah, some are as young as 16
They get drafted when they’re 14, if you can believe that. How would you like to be that scout, trying to figure out if a 14-year-old is going to be a good hockey player?
Do those kids just drop out of school?
Seems to be a lot of traveling involved.

They live with host families
A lot of them went to one of the high schools in my district growing up.
