"I asked him, 'What do you want?' He just basically said, 'I want to be able to coach some good basketball. I want to have a chance to be in the NCAA Tournament.' That's pretty much it. He didn't say I want to make millions or I want to be on Dick Vitale's or Digger Phelps' speed dial, that was never important to him. I know he just wants good basketball. I know he's been frustrated this year because he hasn't seen it (the Cougars are 11-6) but if indeed he sees it he will be as happy as he can be right where he is.''
So said Dick Bennett -- among other things -- to the Appleton Post-Crescent about his son, Tony, after a speaking engagement in Wisconsin last night.

If you've ever wanted a window into Tony's brain the last two offseasons ...
I guarantee this story is as close as you’re ever going to get. Many people outside Pullman have openly wondered why Tony Bennett didn’t move on after the last two years. I maintained he just operates from a different paradigm than just about everybody else, something he also has insisted. This article just confirms what Tony has said all along.
Tony is the man
It is awesome to have a coach like Tony. He wants stability for his family and thinks Pullman is a great place to raise a family. I think it is a testament to his beliefs. I think he likes WSU because he can be in a major conference, but still play the role of a darkhorse. It also helps to be in a major conference when it comes to tournament time. It is kind of hard to ever play the darkhorse if you are Indiana, UCLA, Duke, UNC, etc. I think that is another reason he didn’t go to any top name programs. I think he wants to build something special and go against the mainstream of going to the next great job. I hope he stays (which I think he will) and create a legacy at WSU. For instance, it would be nice to see create a career like the following: UCLA (Wooden), UNC (Smith), DUKE (Krzyzewski), Syracuse (Boeheim), UCONN (Calhoun), Arizona (Olsen), Georgetown (Thompson), Michigan St. (Izzo), Maryland (Williams) and Kentucky (Rupp) Many of those teams didn’t become household names until the coaches showed up and stayed true to their school.
