Students get their seats back

Breaking news, straight from The Daily Evergreen this morning.

The 1,500 seats removed from the student section will be student seats again. ASWSU has also hade it more difficult for the athletic department to remove seats from the student section in the future.

No, it's not April 1st. This is the definition of an about face on the part of Jim Sterk and others involved in the negotiations. All I can say is ... wow.

When does this get implemented?

I must be for next season because I sure at least a good portion of those seats have already been sold to the public for this season.

Thanks for adding the link

I was trying to quickly post this in between classes. What is interesting is where it says they would entertain giving some seats back to the community, just not those behind the hoop in the lower bowl. This is exactly what I have advocated for. Let the students have those lower bowl seats, but give the public the upper level seats behind that hoop. They are not premier seats by any means, but this way, the students have enough seats so they will rarely if ever have to turn people away, and there is potential revenue for those extra public seats up top. I applaud Sterk for this action.

Sorry Peatty but that makes no sense financially to

give away the lower seats for higher seats? I am not sure what drove this train and I agree it will be nice to see the students fill the seats, but I can’t see this as a long term solution because if the Cougs start winning again, their will be a demand on premium seating.

From what you all have said

it doesn’t seem like the demand is there this year. Lots of empty seats in that area, right?

by Jeff Nusser on Jan 28, 2009 1:26 PM PST up reply actions

Yes

And sorry to disagree with you ptown, but I don’t think there will be demand for the premium seating unless someone strikes gold in the hills of the Palouse. Simply put, there aren’t enough people around to pay “premium” prices to fill up the seats. Even if the seats are pretty cheap, travel in and out of Pullman is hazardous in the winter to say the least. Unless we are having a great year and playing another great team, or maybe if Gonzaga becomes so bad we are the only team in Eastern Washington worth watching, Beasley simply won’t sell out more than a couple times a year. If that is the case, then it makes the most sense to let the students fill up the lower bowl so that at least we’ll have a better homecourt advantage.

My only issue with this

From a completely selfish standpoint, of course, is that I was going to get my season tickets down there next year.

Huge victory for the students. I never thought it would happen.

I think two things keyed this: one, the lack of demand for those seats. And two, the PR mess athletics and ASWSU had for doing it without warning.

Also, I wouldn’t be shocked if sports pass prices went up next year. Hate to be a buzzkill, but I’m just sayin’.

Sports pass

They could double the price and they would still be worth every penny. I’m so glad we have such a thing here unlike many other schools in conference.

by james_WSU on Jan 28, 2009 10:49 PM PST up reply actions

I completely agree

As a grad student I don’t even mind paying more than undergrads – it’s only fair since we don’t get charged the stadium renovation fee.

I don’t know the stats for basketball, but only Texas A&M has a greater percentage of student seating in football nationwide.

On the sports pass

I think it is like $145, up from $100 just three years ago. As far as I am concerned, its worth well over $200. If you think about it, 5-6 football games at $30. About 12-15 basketball games at 15$. Throw in a couple other sports games like baseball and that over $400 worth of tickets. The only problem is, as some point you will see the moderate fans not willing to pay say $200.

It has went up a lot in recent years

I was a freshman is 03-04 (sorry hope I don’t make you feel old) and it was $99.

by Craig Powers on Jan 29, 2009 10:19 AM PST up reply actions

Actually come to think of it..

The sports pass went up to 99 at some point in college, it started at $75.

by Craig Powers on Jan 29, 2009 12:10 PM PST up reply actions

What they don't know won't hurt them

Most new students blindly check the sports pass option. Plus, when you are a freshman, you don’t know how much it used to cost!

by Craig Powers on Jan 29, 2009 10:19 AM PST up reply actions

Especially

when someone else is paying for it.

by peaty411s on Jan 29, 2009 11:08 AM PST up reply actions

Exactly

Of course now I’m paying interest on my WSU sporting experiences. I’m carrying them with me in more ways than one!

by Craig Powers on Jan 29, 2009 12:10 PM PST up reply actions

Just so you all can have the correct numbers...

I’ve been a student the past two years.

Last year’s sports pass cost $99
This year’s sports pass cost $129

Just think of it this way

You’re doing your part to help keep Tony Bennett in Pullman! :-)

by Jeff Nusser on Jan 29, 2009 12:12 PM PST up reply actions

At this point...

I don’t think money would be the number one reason Tony would leave Pullman. He’s already making seven figures and from what everybody says, Tony isn’t a financially minded guy.

I think the number one reason Tony would leave Pullman would be for a new challenge, a change of scenery, to go somewhere in which he is not living under his father’s shadow, and if more money were to come from it, he probably wouldn’t complain. However, with the team that went to the tournament the last couple years, many people could say that Dick Bennett had as much to do with that as Tony. With the team we have in place now, it is not as easy to say that. But if the current Cougar roster doesn’t end up making a splash in March in the years to come, what does that say about Tony? Would Tony feel the need to go elsewhere? That is the question.

by cfred on Jan 29, 2009 12:21 PM PST up reply actions

Agreed

As I stated in my post yesterday. I was just mostly saying that his $800,000 has to come from somewhere …

by Jeff Nusser on Jan 29, 2009 1:31 PM PST up reply actions

I believe you are correct, sir.

And they also bumped his assistants’ salaries after the tourney run last year.

by TiltingRight on Jan 29, 2009 3:20 PM PST up reply actions

I think the $800,000 is base salary

And the rest is endorsements. I’m not positive, so I’ll see what I can find.

by Jeff Nusser on Jan 29, 2009 4:45 PM PST up reply actions

OK, here it is from Withers' story last year
Technically, the Cougars raised the portion of Bennett’s collateral compensation from $400,000 to $600,000. That, combined with a base salary of $200,000 and another $200,000 annually for each year he stays, brings him to a million.

Linky.
