Coug of the Year (COTY) 2008 Nomination Thread
2008 is now officially behind us, and what a year it's been.
It's been a year of extremes, actually - an extremely good basketball team followed up by an extremely bad football team. Of course it goes without saying how happy I am that said football team still managed to beat UW.
But who do you think was the most influential Coug sports figure in 2008? We're going to do a bracket-style tournament to find out who earns the first ever CougCenter Coug of the Year (or, if you like abbreviations, COTY) award. Let's get some of the obvious nominations out of the way:
-Tony Bennett
-Kyle Weaver
-Derrick Low
-Paul Wulff
In fact, when we kick off the voting soon, I am fairly certain these will be your top four seeds. Everyone else in the bracket? Well, that's up to you. I'm thinking at the end of the day it'll be a sixteen person competition, so give us some of the dark horses you want to see win.
It doesn't have to be a person either. Butch T. Cougar, perhaps? We all know he's done wonders in internet polls recently. WSU President Elson Floyd? Jim Sterk? June Daugherty? Brandon Gibson? The list could go on and on, but who do you like? That's what the comments are for.

This one is sentimental to me ...
but I would like to nominate Women’s Soccer Coach Matt Potter for taking the team back to the NCAA tournament for the first time since I was there.

I second Potter
I’d also like to nominate Brandon Gibson. The guy decided to come back and had to put up with a pretty freaking horrible season. Through it all, he kept his chin up and didn’t complain.

June Daugherty
Has turned the women’s program around and recruited a top-16 class to Pullman.

Nico Grasu
And I know he’s not a Cougar, but Tripper Johnson definitely effected the 2008 year for the Cougs!

Jim Sterk
He deserves a lot of credit for the rise in Cougar Athletics. Football gets so much attention, but soccer, basketball, crew and baseball are all competitive. Not to mention the fundraising for the Stadium

Bernard Lagat
Does he count? Pretty remarkable making it to the Olympics – as an American this time, too.

Nuss or Jo-jo
I have stated my dislike for Nik in the game. Please explain to me why he played so much today. I would like to know what he has shown us that should give me confidence in him the rest of the season. I realize the same could be said for many players out there, but he stands out…as usual…

You can write
I’m curious if your take is different from mine. Besides, I might not get to it until Wednesday or Thursday.
