8-6

Player of the Game: Taylor Rochestie. 19 points, 8 of 14 shooting, his best offensive performance of the year so far.

Play of the Game: Rochestie's jumper to bring the Cougs within range, down 44-40. And then, of course, Patrick Christopher hits a three. The story of our season so far.

We can still make it to the NCAAs....

by winning the the Pac10 tournament. We could be a team that finally gets it done at the end of the year and win—remember Oregon two years ago? They weren’t 8th in the pac or anything, but they absolutely DEMOLISHED everyone in the tournament and actually played UNC closely for a bit in the Elite 8. From what i hear, the guys started playing with some more fire, so hopefully we can play well against Stanford.

Right now, i’m not even banking on the NIT, but this team has so much potential it’s hard not to feel frustrated. The way the cards are falling, our basketball AND football team look to be decent (if not great) in 2010. Of course that’s the year AFTER i graduate though… : \

Grippi today
Christopher, who was this week’s Pac-10 player of the week, finished with 22 points, hitting 9 of 14 mostly contested shots.

It may be hard to see from the second row, but I wouldn’t call Christopher’s shots mostly contested. Unless, of course, you consider air the defender.

Exactly. I would say that 6 or 7 of those makes were wide open shots.

It was outrageous. I remember one point where one of the Cal players basically through-up the ball and had it lying on the ground ready for a WSU player to pick it up. Then the Cougars tried to go for the lose ball only for the Cal player to recover and find an open Christopher for 3 in the corner. All you could say was bad luck right there…

Taylor

Oregon 2 years ago played in the elite 8, against FL, so that may have been the year before. They were lead by Aaron Brooks that year. The fact of the matter is both Taylor and Klay had pretty good games and we still got smoked. At no point durning that game if your a Cal fan do you feel like you are going to loose. We are getting closer to putting a full 40 together, but the schedule isn’t getting any easier. I watched Stanford and UW play last night and both teams looked years ahead of where we are right now. We need everyone clicking for a full 40 to get a win, and hopefully that is Saturday.

Do you think any of our guards will get a dunk to this year?

While statistically Rochestie has a better game

I still think there is a fundamental problem with him shooting the ball 14 times and only coming up with 1 assist. More POINTS by Rochestie is not what this team needs. You can find a player to give you those numbers at any high school in america, what his teammates need is a leader and an offensive qb.

At some point, though, don't you think his teammates bear some of that responsibility?

I mean, really, how much are they doing to help him out? Obviously, I didn’t see the game last night, but what I saw on Saturday was a bunch of guys standing around.

This is where I have to look at Tony

and ask why nothing is being done to try and get some offense out of this team. I guess I’m just wrong and Tony wants his point guard shooting the ball 12-15 times a game and not dishing out assists. If that’s the case then you can’t really blame anyone on the floor.

I believe that they don’t have the personnel to run that stupid motion and it leads to what we’ve seen. So again, what’s up Tony? Sqaure pegs and round holes.

Baynes

Baynes missing everything last night probably reduced the amounts of assists for a lot of guys. For whatever reason, Baynes couldn’t hit last night and that was probably one of the main reasons they lost this one.

Most of Bayne's shot attempts are not assist opportunities

When a post player recieves the ball with his back to the basket, puts it on the floor, makes a move and scores there is no assist to be had. This team hasn’t even been converting assists when Baynes is hitting his shot.

@ UI: Baynes 9-15, 18 pts, out of 9 made fg’s 3 were assisted, total team assists = 10
V. Cal: Baynes 2-9, 8 pts, out of 2 made fg’s 1 was assisted, total team assists = 13

To assist Baynes on a basket that would mean that someone would have to be driving and dishing, or there would have to be some nice interior passing. Now, I didn’t get to watch the game last night, but from what we’ve seen all seasons thus far, there hasn’t been much for penetration, we really aren’t seeing enough lineups with more than one post player on the floor to make these things happen.

Again, beating a dead horse.

taylor

I wouldn’t want my point guard shooting the ball 12-15 times a game either…but last night Taylor was taking those shots out of necessity. He doesn’t make those and we lose by 20. I wasn’t at the game but on the radio it sounded like capers was running the point and taylor was getting open for jumpers during our run. I’d much rather have klay as my 3 and taylor as my 2 than have nik on the floor. Capers could then defend the 2 klay the 3 ect. I think everyone agrees we have to try something a little more dramatic than putting abe in the game for 8 minutes.

Brother, you are singing my song

If that is what was really happening, then AMEN! I’ve been calling for that move for months. Rochestie is the only guy on the roster that can get open without the ball. Well, maybe Harthun, but it appears that Lodwick is getting those minutes (sheesh).
