Anyone else hear Todd McShay?

Said Jake Locker could be the #1 overall pick in the draft if he comes out this year. Made me throw up in my mouth a little.

by Kyle Rancourt on Oct 3, 2009 10:34 AM PDT reply actions

I just don't see it

He’s a lot better, but I think he’s got a ridiculously long way to go to be an NFL-caliber quarterback. He’s got the talent, but he’s the classic case of a guy who will benefit long term by staying in school and starting 12 or 13 more games.

by Jeff Nusser on Oct 3, 2009 10:41 AM PDT up reply actions

Locker is a good one....

But a top Pac-10 QB should be able to generate more than 6 points vs. Furd.

He’s got a ways to go. Don’t get me wrong, I’d love him on our team, but he’s no Tim Tebow…yet.

Do you like ND or doggies to win today?

What do you mean?

http://www.spartyandfriends.com/

by thecassino on Oct 3, 2009 12:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Referring to his NFL draft status

I thought his contract he signed with the Angels basically said that after college, he had a 6 year baseball contract that went into affect. I am wrong?

Vote for Butch!

by spencer peaty on Oct 3, 2009 12:37 PM PDT up reply actions

The Angels own him for 6 years, but he can play football if he wants.

It’s just that if he decides to play baseball, the Angels own his rights for 6 years.

Touchdown GREG PAULUS!

Did you know he used to play basketball? At Duke?

WHAT??!?!??!?!??!

BRETT FAVRE PLAYS FOR THE VIKINGS? AND HE’S PLAYING AGAINST THE PACKERS THIS WEEK?!?!??!?!

Alabam RB Mark Ingram is good

As is Rolando McClain at LB. I’m impressed.

This Wisconsin/Minnesota game is turning out to be a darn good one

I’m starting to become convinced that Wisconsin is never going to be what it was under Bielema.

by Jeff Nusser on Oct 3, 2009 11:49 AM PDT reply actions

Clarification

Under Alvarez with Bielema now at the helm. That was confusing the way I wrote it …

Yeah thats the game Im watching

Til UW/Notre Dame and LSU/Georgia come on.

I think the Huskies have a really, really good chance of winning

And it wouldn’t surprise me if they went in there and won by double digits. Honestly.

by Jeff Nusser on Oct 3, 2009 11:55 AM PDT up reply actions

If Locker can not make mistakes like he did last week

They’ve got a shot.

A win wouldn’t surprise me, Sark and Holt know Charlie Weis pretty well, but Im not sold until I see us play well on the road.

http://www.spartyandfriends.com/

by thecassino on Oct 3, 2009 12:00 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm betting they got their road jitters out of their system now

They were properly humbled, and will be hungry. Notre Dame, on the other hand, lost to Michigan, barely beat MSU … I just don’t think they’re very good.

by Jeff Nusser on Oct 3, 2009 12:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, plus they're pretty banged up

Moreso than the Huskies.

http://www.spartyandfriends.com/

by thecassino on Oct 3, 2009 12:02 PM PDT up reply actions

Perhaps we spoke too soon

If they score right now, they can kick off and play D. Wow.

by Jeff Nusser on Oct 3, 2009 12:00 PM PDT up reply actions

I think kicking was the better choice

Even though Minnesota had a good shot to recover it there.

by Jeff Nusser on Oct 3, 2009 12:04 PM PDT up reply actions

Dont really understand throwing the ball down the field in that situation

Trying to get a 1st, Ok, but not like that.

Passing there was really, REALLY stupid

If you drop back and don’t see your guy, tuck it and run up into the middle. Moron.

by Jeff Nusser on Oct 3, 2009 12:08 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, now Minnesotas got plenty of time if they can get some 1sts

And get out of bounds a couple times.

How bout basketball season Nuss? Getting pumped yet?

A little more than a month out and it kinda just hit me. Gonna start working on UW’s postion previews, and the conference preview soon.

Im almost giddy.

by thecassino on Oct 3, 2009 12:10 PM PDT reply actions

Not yet.

I have a hard time getting into it. Especially since baseball’s not over yet.

by Jeff Nusser on Oct 3, 2009 12:11 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, see Im not a big baseball guy

Follow the Mariners, but thats about it.

And once football starts, I really dont give them too much attention unless theyre in a pennant race.

http://www.spartyandfriends.com/

by thecassino on Oct 3, 2009 12:13 PM PDT up reply actions

Plus, I feel like football just started

But when it comes, I’ll be really, really excited. However, I think this could be a very rough year. It’s probably going to come down to how far Klay can carry us. We might look a lot like Arizona State of two years ago.

by Jeff Nusser on Oct 3, 2009 12:14 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm thinking that the key is how well our new point...

guards adjust to Pac-10 play.

Also, we need another big besides Casto to step up.

I’m concerned about Bone and how his team D will look too. Not optimistic about that.

by westsidecougar1 on Oct 3, 2009 12:19 PM PDT up reply actions

The big is the problem

We lost the second best rebounder in the conference over the past two years. That’s going to be a struggle, unless our guards rebound exceptionally well. Klay is a very good rebounder, as is Nik. We might see more of Nik this year than we like for that simple fact alone.

by Jeff Nusser on Oct 3, 2009 12:24 PM PDT up reply actions

The more I look at the Cougs the more I like their chances

There are teams that I think they’re definitely going to be better than (Stanford, Oregon, USC, Arizona State), and if they can take care of those teams, split with the teams that are more on their level, and sneak a couple wins in against Cal/UW/UCLA, I don’t see any reason why they don’t win 10 or 11 games.

Of course, it all depends on how the transition to Bone goes.

http://www.spartyandfriends.com/

by thecassino on Oct 3, 2009 12:19 PM PDT up reply actions

That's just the way I look at the Pac-10 every year

Who’s better than who, and how many wins does that add up to.

Who’d you guys draw in the Big-12?

http://www.spartyandfriends.com/

by thecassino on Oct 3, 2009 12:23 PM PDT up reply actions

K-State

That’s a good match for us, I think. They (the Wildcats) could be in the Top 25 when that game rolls around.

by Jeff Nusser on Oct 3, 2009 12:25 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah just pulled up your schedule

I like the K-State game, but it would probably be nicer if you didnt have to play them 3 days after playing at Gonzaga.

http://www.spartyandfriends.com/

by thecassino on Oct 3, 2009 12:32 PM PDT up reply actions

No doubt in my mind that the Pac-10 will...

be down again this season.

Cal will be very strong…but after that, the UW and UCLA (and OSU?) will be a notch down to be sure.

We’ll likely see a max of two Sweet Sixteen teams this time.

by westsidecougar1 on Oct 3, 2009 12:33 PM PDT up reply actions

Might have to move my grading upstairs

Not sure my computer will be able to handle streaming UW/ND, Stanford/UCLA and FSU/BC all at the same time …

I only saw 2

but did see a Georgia flag and a Texas flag

by coug2828 on Oct 3, 2009 12:54 PM PDT up reply actions

There was the white one,

There was a crimson one on the far right behind Herbstreit, and there was another crimson one like 30 yards behind the white one. There was another flag that had a big W on a very dark flag, it may have been wisconson.

Seems pretty clear

that UW won’t have much of a problem moving the ball. Nothing surprising about that, but “they are who we thought they were.”

by TiltingRight on Oct 3, 2009 12:53 PM PDT reply actions

Neither have I

But the UW defense is a little lacking in talent. Im not sure Notre Dame has that excuse.

by coug2828 on Oct 3, 2009 1:30 PM PDT reply actions

I don't know what it is

I have been cheering for the UW today. Maybe it’s more about not liking Notre Dame but Coug fans have been slightly supportive of the UW. The students cheered the UW win against SC in Martin.

As a life long Coug that has hated anything purple it feels strange…and dirty! ;)

by BornCoug on Oct 3, 2009 1:31 PM PDT reply actions

Go take a long shower.

BTW…notice the announcers stated “the Irish down by one point”….instead of “the UW up by one point”. In other words, ND is ALWAYS the reference point.

by westsidecougar1 on Oct 3, 2009 1:34 PM PDT up reply actions

oops

I guess I didn’t reply. I should be for Notre Dame. Talk radio in Seattle will be unbearable with a win today.

by BornCoug on Oct 3, 2009 1:47 PM PDT up reply actions

Notre Dame Brodcasting Network

No question about ND being the reference point. I will never get over a college team having their own network channel. Talk about sick!

On another incredibly important note, I usually like all-white uniforms but it looks pretty strange looking on the Dawg’s. I guess it is better than the gold pants though.

by BornCoug on Oct 3, 2009 1:39 PM PDT reply actions

I really don't like seeing Nick Holt

Mr. Awesome! Idaho gives him a chance and he leaves them high and dry. Now NDs announcers are talking about how he expects to turn it around this year.

by BornCoug on Oct 3, 2009 1:58 PM PDT reply actions

Holt's an grossly overpaid psycho.

He’s certainly not worth $700K+ per year. No way.

by westsidecougar1 on Oct 3, 2009 2:00 PM PDT up reply actions

nice tackling

by that last uw guy, #20 i think? yuk

by coug2828 on Oct 3, 2009 1:59 PM PDT reply actions

Pick plays, offensive PI

Never called. I don’t know why receivers don’t do it on every play.

by Jeff Nusser on Oct 3, 2009 2:03 PM PDT reply actions

What's the call there?

Is it legal at the line, illegal 5 yards down field? That was clearly a pick.

by BornCoug on Oct 3, 2009 2:05 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't know the exact rule

But I believe you can’t impede a defender before the ball is caught.

by Jeff Nusser on Oct 3, 2009 2:07 PM PDT up reply actions

The only thing worse is all the "legal" holding

I have been trying to figure out why WSU doesn’t do it.

by BornCoug on Oct 3, 2009 2:09 PM PDT up reply actions

That ball was tipped at the line

tipped by Allan and right into the hands of Butler.

Now Locker fumbles.

This game is nuts!!!

by BornCoug on Oct 3, 2009 2:08 PM PDT reply actions

Is the Huskies offense just not very good?

If you look at what they did against USC, Stanford and now today, one has to start to wonder.

by Jeff Nusser on Oct 3, 2009 2:09 PM PDT reply actions

That's why I say that as good of an athlete Locker is,

he’s just not getting it done.

An all Pac-10 QB would be able to get their team in the endzone more often.

by westsidecougar1 on Oct 3, 2009 2:11 PM PDT up reply actions

Year 1

He’s not very comfortable in the pocket and he may not have the feel. I bet he will get a lot better through this year and next.

by BornCoug on Oct 3, 2009 2:17 PM PDT up reply actions

Stanford's up

don’t hear a ton about them, but Stanford’s D is tough.

by coug2828 on Oct 3, 2009 2:24 PM PDT reply actions

I think their defense is getting better as the year goes along

But, again, they’ve built it on stopping WSU, UW and UCLA. None of those teams have shown much, outside of one impressive drive by Washington.

by Jeff Nusser on Oct 3, 2009 2:25 PM PDT up reply actions

held Wake to 17 or 21 i think(somewhere around there)

not exactly an offensive powerhouse either i guess…but all you can do is stop whoever is lining up against you.

ball control offense + stingy D = good season usually

by coug2828 on Oct 3, 2009 2:29 PM PDT up reply actions

A Cougar post on the youth, credit to Grippi

I’m not sure if it was posted here but Grippi mentioned there could be 6 true and redshirt freshmen in the lineup on offense today. Tuel, Winston, Reitnoeur, Pencer, Simone, and Stormo.

The defense will have a bunch at times as well. Long, Spitz, and Simmons start and Hayward, Laurenzi, and Matthews will get time.

Then you also have Bland, Hoffman-Ellis, and Karstetter as soph’s. Some of this has to do with injuries of course by man we are young.

by BornCoug on Oct 3, 2009 2:28 PM PDT reply actions

ND with 328 yards

early in the 3rd qtr. That’s Awesome!

by BornCoug on Oct 3, 2009 2:47 PM PDT up reply actions

Wouldn't it be great?

If every Pac10 team beat ND this year?

eh

every but one sounds ok

by coug2828 on Oct 3, 2009 2:56 PM PDT up reply actions

ha

I live in Pullman so I wouldn’t have to hear from the Huskies :P

Plus if we beat the later in the year, some of that air in their chest would deflate lol

because if he comes back next year, it’s going to suck.

but not having Locker and Polk last year was pretty big. Agree on Polk. A really tough runner.

by BornCoug on Oct 3, 2009 3:37 PM PDT up reply actions

Stanford's next 3: OSU AZ ASU

They have a chance to pile up some wins before they get a brutal last 4: OR, USC, CAL, Notre Dame. Luckily for them, three of those are at home.

by BornCoug on Oct 3, 2009 3:47 PM PDT reply actions

Charlie Weis?

boosters have been calling for his head for a while. Is this the year he gets the boot? For some reason, anything less than an undefeated National Championship season is a failure for the Golden Domers. It’s not the 1920s.

by Kyle Rancourt on Oct 3, 2009 3:51 PM PDT reply actions

Oh my!

Give the defense some credit here. They have been down there a long time.

by BornCoug on Oct 3, 2009 3:53 PM PDT reply actions

Roughing the Snapper?

I’ve been trying to figure that out for a while. That’s like calling Roughing the Center after he snaps the ball to the QB.

by Kyle Rancourt on Oct 3, 2009 3:54 PM PDT reply actions

here is the rule:

Rule 9-4-6 p. 64 Rule Book: Roughing the snapper. A defensive player shall not charge directly into the snapper when the offensive team is in a scrimmage-kick formation

Rule 2-30-14, p. 32 Rule Book: A snapper is the player who is facing his opponent’s goal line with his shoulders approximately parallel thereto and who snaps the ball. In a scrimmage kick formation, the snapper remains a snapper until he has had a reasonable opportunity to regain his balance and protect himself or until he blocks or moves to otherwise participate in the play.
