No way - not basketball, too

Howie Stalwick checks in with a Cougar hoops notebook for Cougfan.com, and there's a bit of trepidation heading into the official start of practice next weekend.

It appears DeAngelo Casto has had a little setback with his knee, and James Watson is suffering from the aftereffects of a concussion.

Oh, and then there was this little nugget:

(Xavier Thames) was forced to quit practicing with the Cougars recently after the NCAA Clearinghouse raised questions about his high school transcript. Like Casto and Watson, he continues to attend practices.

Bone told Stalwick he expects all three to be ready when practice starts, but ... sheesh. Do we really have to even entertain this?

Sure was nice of the NCAA Clearinghouse to wait til now to raise the Thames issue.

So that if there’s a class he needs to take to become eligible it’s probably too late, whereas if they’d done it when they should have he could have taken a class over the summer. Unbelieveable.

I keep holding out hope that one day those jokers at the NCAA will get their act together, but it seems like an exercise in futility.

The NCAA clearing house is a joke

You guys have had issues with them, too, as has pretty much every other school.

Lets see here:
They’re slow
They’re inconsistent
They make too many errors that screw over kids

I’ve been tired of them for a long time

Hmm...

I can’t help but wonder if somebody tipped off the NCAA about whatever issue they are researching on Thames. I certainly wouldn’t point fingers at somebody like Ben Howland, who is a class act in my opinion, but could somebody high up at UCLA (who made a late run at him) or another university somehow reported some sort of issue to the NCAA?

Anything's possible

I wouldn’t read too much into it, though.

Hope it gets all worked out

Great to read some news on basketball, to bad its not that good, hopefully the injuries to Casto and Watson are completely healed by the start of the season.

As for the issue with Thames, that could be bad…..the NCAA clearinghouse is a total joke, why did it take them this long to find this, shouldn’t this have been caught and taken care of during the summer, not a week before practices starts? Hopefully this gets cleared up quickly also but with how fast the NCAA moves something tells me he wont be ready for the start of the season.

Grippi concurs that all three should be ready to go soon
The MRI results should be back today, but no one, including Casto, expects anything to be wrong. James Watson was out as well, still recuperating from his neck injury – the poor guy was wearing this tall neck brace the other day when we talked, which made it tough for the 6-foot-8 Watson to look down at the 5-10 me. He should be back soon. And Xavier Thames has not practiced recently either. The point guard has a NCAA issue. WSU sent the requested paperwork this week and Bone feels it will be cleared up in time for Thames to practice next week.

I saw that, too

I sure hope that’s true. Not that it would be a huge problem if they weren’t ready to go, since the first game is still a month off, but given the other ways it seems like we’re snakebit …
