I love the Cougs.

This is my first FanPost, so forgive me if it is incorrect in any way.  But this is something I've wanted to say for a long damn time, and I feel like maybe, this will be the only place people will fully understand.

I love the Cougars.

Phew.  There.  I don't think my girlfriend, my co-workers, or even my family members understand that.  I don't root for the Cougs.  I love them.  They are a part of my sanity.  My emotions, both good and bad, are tied directly to how they fare in sports.  And I don't ever want that to change.

When I was forced to choose whether or not I wanted to be a Coug or a Husky, I felt the choice was simple.  All of the people that I knew at UW were arrogant, pompous, and stuck up.  They talked down to people who didn't have a trust fund, or drove something other than a luxury car.  They wore purple & gold on football Saturdays, but then went back to playing croquet and drinking expensive wine.  All the people I knew that were at WSU loved being Cougs.  They wore their crimson & gray every day, not just on game day.  When I wore a WSU t-shirt to a Mariners game, 4 different people stopped me just to say "Go Cougs" and give me a high five.  We didn't sit and talk, we didn't pretend to know each other, we didn't do anything other than acknowledge the Crimson & Gray in each others hearts.  And that was the day I became a full fledged Coug.

My girlfriend used to (kind of) root for UW because she had friends there.  Then I pointed out all the things wrong with UW and why she should love the Cougs.  It started out during basketball season when she thought Rochestie was easy on the eyes.  My favorite assessment of him was "I like that he wears high socks."  I mean, you can't make this stuff up.  Then when we went to a party, my buddy and I sat around talking about how good Klay will be and she chimed in with "Don't forget about Casto."  All the guys around stopped, looked at each other, looked at me, and then gave her a high five because she was retaining the information.  In fact, she talks to people at work about the Cougs and how much she loves Tuel already and that Simone and her are getting married (but don't worry, she said I can still come to the wedding).

Husky fans are there when the getting is good.  I can't tell you how many bandwagon fans are trying to talk smack to me now that they're semi-relevant again.  Really?  Where were you last year?  See, when WSU does poorly, we stick around.  We don't watch because they're winning, we watch because they're OUR team.  It's something I can't explain to anyone who isn't a Coug, and all of you Cougs reading this immidiately know what I mean.  It's the same reason I point and give a little fist pump every time I see a vehicle with a Coug bumper sticker/window decal on the freeway, and the same reason I say "Go Cougs" to everyone wearing anything WSU that I see in public, and it's the same reason I taught my son (who was 3 at the time) the E-Drid "Go Cougs" rap song.  He later saw someone wearing a Husky shirt and said, "We don't like the Huskies.  The Huskies suck."  And another Coug is born.

I apologize for the terrible flow of this FanPost.  I wasn't really trying to piece together a well written article as much as I was relying on emotion.  And dammit, I love the Cougs.

This FanPost does not necessarily reflect the views of the site's writers or editors, who may not have verified its accuracy. It does, however, reflect the views of this particular fan, which is just as important as the views of our writers or editors.

Also.

The first time she said Casto she called him Castro. I had to explain that one was an awesome basketball player who blocks a lot of shots and has crazy dunks, and the other was a Cuban dictator. But hey, it happens.

I liked sports before I can here,

but I never really sat down and paid attention. My freshman year, I was at the Oregon game when we upset them (06’) and I saw how crazy our fans were and that’s the day that I started following every blog, article, ANYTHING I could find about Cougar sports. I followed up on the volleyball team, the crews, baseball, but my heart is always in Cougar football and basketball. My freshman year also happened to be Tony’s first year as head coach. I would wait hours and hours in line and my friends looked at me like I was crazy and I guess I am. I’m crazy about WSU.

Thanks for your post. If I ever have kids, they’ll be Cougs. No doubt about it.

Go Cougs!

Some of the Husky fan bashing may be a bit unwarranted.

It is still a state school, and I’m pretty sure UW has a slightly lower tuition than WSU. So I don’t think everyone that goes there has a luxury car and a trust fund.

by Dancing Football on Oct 9, 2009 1:58 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

I actually have a lot of friends who go there. I was being facetious and exaggerating, because not all of them are spoiled rich kids. I don’t have a problem with UW fans, truth be told. It’s the fair-weather fans who make me want to punch an old lady. All of my friends who are neither Cougs nor Huskies are all of a sudden Huskies because they beat USC. It’s just comical because the minute they lose, they’re nowhere to be found, and when they win, their Facebook status’ light up with pro-UW banter.

The point of the post wasn’t to rag on UW, so let’s try and get that out of the way. I apologize to the UW fans reading that. It was more of a ‘god I love the Cougs’ emotional rant that just so happened to mention the Huskies.

I couldn't have said it better myself...

That is what it truly means to be a Coug. I agree with everything you said in that article. Fantastic piece. Go Cougs!

I agree completely

I’m currently entertaining the idea of going to UW for grad school (blasphemous I know) and my family keeps asking me how I’m going to handle rooting for the Huskies now, and being a Husky. I have to make it clear that even if I go to school there I will NEVER be a Husky, and I would never root for them.

by DrayCox on Oct 9, 2009 6:56 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Hah

It’s funny, because I never actually went to WSU. I go to a CC in Bothell and am probably going to end up at UW as well because my girlfriend has a really good job in Bellevue and I’m not going to ask her to quit to move to Pullman. I want to steal a crimson cap & gown so I can stand out amongst the purple ones during graduation. That’d be stellar. I’ll NEVER root for the Huskies, and I’ll always be a Coug, no matter where I go to school. Being a Coug isn’t about your Alma Mater, it’s about your mindset and your heart.

Nah.

Move to Pullman. You won’t regret it. Well ok you might… but I’m telling you that you won’t.

oh i WANT to.

but I just dont think it’s feasable. perhaps grad school in a couple of years though. she really wants to go over there because she’s trying to understand why I love the Cougs so much, but it doesn’t help that we’re surrounded by purple and gold.

by playerkyle14 on Oct 10, 2009 6:35 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah I'm working on winning the lotto

then we don’t have to worry about a job. and I could help out with Phase 3 at Martin Stadium. its a win-win-win.

If you can stand to be apart for a while,

you won’t regret it. This is my 4th year at WSU, and my girlfriend has been going to school elsewhere for all of those years. It can be very hard but (I think) the important thing is to get your education from the right school for you. Judging by your post, I think your a coug.

Vote for Butch!

Right On

Well said, my Coug Brother…
I read this to my wife (who played basketball for a school in Utah…) to better help her understand why I fist pump every car on the road with a Washington State sign on their car. She proudly wears all my old WSU gear, which is pretty hot, so she’s starting to come around…
We Cougs understand what success means and what it takes to achieve it…which is why we root so hard for our teams to rise to that level. And we have faith that they will do so…
Go Cougs!
(And for the record, I now live in the Boise area, and you can’t believe the number of “bandwagon” fans they have! Makes me sick…

I'm glad you're with me.

I always think I’m the only one who points to a WSU window decal and fist pumps. I got cut off in traffic on 405 the other day, was about to honk and give the finger, and then saw the dude had a WSU sticker on the back of his SUV.

“Well, he must be in a hurry. It’s ok. I ain’t mad atcha. Go Cougs.”

I love all of my Cougar brothers and sisters and no matter if I know you or not, you’re all ok in my book.

I ride the 405 (Bothell)

I have Coug stickers on my motorcycle and on our Jeep. My two kids are big time Cougs.

Great fanpost, Kyle! Go Cougs.

Slightly OT – Anyone from CougCenter going to San Antonio????

Not me

It will be painful enough on TV.

by Nuss on Oct 12, 2009 8:24 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

It won't be as bad as Oregon

But it will be bad. It will be the most gifted offense we’ve seen all year.

I can't turn down the riverwalk

Meeting a good friend down there as well for a guys weekend. Last time I was there the Cougs got a W!

Don't know if you've ever seen Jo-Jo in the comments around here

But he lives in Boise, too. Let’s just say he’s not a fan.

Blue and Orange Filth

I tell you what, it just makes my day when I see someone flying our colors around the Boise area…
In fact, I give out bonus points to my students (I’m a high school teacher) when they wear anything from Washington State…and it should go without saying that they lose points (or favor) with me for wearing Piss and Purple…

by WSUScottie on Oct 12, 2009 3:51 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

HA!

I always tell my students who wear Coug stuff that it’s the “best looking” whatever it is I’ve seen all day … or the “ugliest” thing I’ve seen all day if it’s, well, you know.

Playerkyle14, I am interested in more on how you got

hooked on Wazzu. Was it family or friends? I am always glad to see someone who didn’t attend get the Wazzu IV! I can easily understand how people in Seattle become UW fans, but it is always interests me in how west siders become Wazzu fans.
Don’t worry if you don’t get a chance to enroll, you can always send your kids and your grandkids!! That is the great thing about being a Coug, it truly ties family together for generations.

To be honest

I can remember all the way back to ‘91. My Dad was a fan of Washington sports, so he rooted for both the Huskies & the Cougs. Obviously we know what happened in 1991. I remember my sister and her friend dressing up in all purple and gold for the game and as a 7 year old, I couldn’t help but think, “Damn, those colors are just ugly.”

Something about it (not just the colors) put me off right away. I wanted to like the Huskies, but I couldn’t get into them. I didn’t dislike them (yet), but I was kind of indifferent.

My sister then got engaged to a guy who ended up going over to Wazzu. At this point, I was a Junior in HS. All of my older cousins started going off to school and at one point, I had 5 or 6 extended family members over in the Palouse.

My first Cougar game was the initial Qwest Field game vs. Nevada. Will Dertings 98 yard INT might have done it for me, but what really sealed my fate was my first trip to Wazzu later that year. We played the Ducks and Devard Darling ended up with 7 catches for 133 yards and 2 TDs. I was hooked from then on out.

Also, Devard Darling is probably my favorite Coug of all time because of that game. Can’t really explain it, I just will always love him no matter what.

But that’s it. I was a kid without a school to root for, and was shown the Crimson light.
