AUDIO: CougCenter Podcast, Episode 14
Just Grady and I this week, as we had a bit of an issue with our recording time. But to make up for it, we talk extra long -- 42 minutes worth of football and basketball! (Mostly basketball.)
As a side note, we'll apologize again for some of the pops and noises that seem to find their way into the recording through TalkShoe. The good news is that we're actively working on improving our technology to dramatically improve our sound quality. I've been working with Ty Hildenbrandt of The Solid Verbal podcast (if you love college football, it should be required listening) to get ideas to upgrade some things, and you should notice some pretty big differences soon. (You might already notice some small differences if you're listening carefully.)
As usual you can listen to the audio via the player below, or visit our podcast page for myriad subscription options. You can also find us in the iTunes directory under keyword "CougCenter." The advantage of subscribing? Besides having the audio directly delivered to your player of choice, I often upload the audio to the podcast site before posting it here.

Great stuff guys!
I hadn’t really thought of the fact that making even one free throw per possession is average. Is 1ppp really average? I looked at the KenPom stats and last season 101.4 was average, so that’s 1.014 ppp. I guess that still means that shooting free throws at anything better than 50% is better than average offensive efficiency, which must be a large part of why teams who shoot a lot of free throws tend to win. Hadn’t really thought about it that way before!

That's pretty much it in a nutshell
There was a great piece on Memphis two years ago by Basketball Prospectus regarding all the handwringing over the Tigers’ poor free throw shooting. This, essentially, was the point that was made.
Here are a couple of reads for you:

The point, essentially, is that there is no such thing as a bad trip to the free throw line, no matter how poorly your team shoots from there. It doesn’t even generally have that much of an effect on a close game.
Of course, these were written before Memphis clanked their way to a final game loss to Kansas …
