My response to Ken Schram
In case you missed it in the FanShots, it appears Ken Schram is not a fan of Paul Wulff's decision to suspend Jason Stripling for only a quarter following his run-in with police over the weekend. Here is my response that I e-mailed to him. I didn't want to put it on the front page because I don't think it deserves that much attention, but I thought you all might be interested in it, so I put it over here in the FanPosts. If you want to send him your own thoughts, you can send it to kenschram@komo4news.com.

Slow news day? Here's an idea: Take a cheap shot at the easiest target! You know, those "out-of-control" athletes who "think they're above the law" and their "win-at-all-costs" coaches! And, just for funsies, let's tweak WSU fans everywhere by using the term they hate the most in the headline!
Actually, I've got a better idea. Do some research and have a little bit of ethical integrity before you use your platform as a bully pulpit.
Simply stating that Jason Stripling is "facing the possibility of over a year in jail and several thousand dollars in fines" is just irresponsible. Any reporter -- and I use the term incredibly loosely with you -- worth his salt knows two things:
1) According to the state RCW, fourth degree assault is a catch-all for any "assault" amounting to less than the requirement for first, second or third degree assault. This could include something as simple as pushing someone, grabbing someone’s shirt or spitting on someone. It’s more or less an act that invades someone’s space — not an act that causes physical harm.
2) Being taken into custody is a far cry from being charged. This could just as easily be a case of a fight taking place and the cops arresting everyone in sight as it could be of the player actually doing something wrong. If -- and it's a big if -- he's actually charged, a guy such as Stripling with a clean record likely receives a minimal fine and maybe some community service, and the likelihood that this ever sees the light of day in a courtroom is something approaching zero. You should know as well as anyone that he's not actually facing a year in jail and thousands of dollars in fines. (As a side note, your statement is inaccurate, too -- he's not actually facing potential penalties until he's charged, which, as of yet, he hasn't been.) As I said, just insanely irresponsible.
Beyond that, you conveniently ignore the fact that the day before Stripling's punishment was announced, Paul Wulff suspended a starting defensive lineman for the remainder of the season for an unspecified violation of team rules -- it didn't even require a brush with the law. Your ill-conceived "commentary" (again, I use the term loosely) also fails to report the numerous players he's kicked off the team in the past two years -- many of whom would be helping this team play a lot better than it is -- for run-ins with the law and other discipline issues. (And before you go blaming that one on Wulff for poor recruiting, those guys were almost all holdovers from Bill Doba's recruiting classes. I figured I'd point that out to you since the likelihood you'd ever research that yourself seems small.)
I guess this is what disgusts me the most about your so-called "commentary." I'm a high school teacher and have advised student publications for going on a decade. I can tell you that my students would never let something this poorly done ever see the light of day in their publication. Too bad you and your editors can't live up to the journalistic standards of my teenagers.
And people in the media — specifically broadcast media — wonder why the public ridicules them and doesn’t trust them. It’s poorly researched, cheap shot garbage like this that gives us all a bad name.

Well put
He is quite the loose cannon. I guess they laid off all the editors in the last round? Or they are resorting to cheap shots to generate page hits? Whatever happened to innocent until proven guilty and fact checking?
Example of (purple and) yellow journalism at it’s finest.
Go Cougs!

Schram's a REALLY nice guy
but a total blowhard. A friend used to work at KOMO and would tell stories of him going off on riffs during meetings and then leaving. The person running the meeting would address all the concerns he’d brought up just in time for him to come back and lambaste them for the same things they just addressed.
Then someone would call him to the carpet on it, and he’d sheepishly say “sorry” and skulk away.

I don't know him
Which is why I focused on his journalistic blunders in this thing. It’s just inexcusable for a man of his experience.

Totally agree
and I’ve sent him more than a few of similar emails on a number of issues.
Part of the reason he goes off “half-cocked” like that is for the reaction.

Oh, I know EXACTLY why he does it
And it’s cheap and wrong.

That just made my day
I actually ignored Schram’s “commentary” because I didn’t want be annoyed, but reading your response was definitely worth it.

I completely agree
I added in the fanshot that the suspension still appears to be indefinite as Grippi says Stripling hasn’t practiced at all this week, either. You don’t practice, you don’t play.
Additionally, it would have been nice if he looked at the discipline track record from Wulff. Kevin Norrel, Romeo Pellum, Michael Willis, and the list goes on. He’s handled the mess he’s been given in a pretty admirable way and seems to not be a coach that ignores off field or locker room problems.
Perhaps he should’ve focused on his own backyard a few years ago.

Hah
Well, first of all, I was under the impression that Stripling committed 1st Degree Assault and he was charged, not 4th degree and not charged. So that changes everything.
I think the most upsetting part about the whole thing is how lazy it is. I mean, have you ever gone off on someone while sitting in your living room after hearing partial details on TV, then later got the full scoop, and felt like a jackass? Yeah. I have. And I was glad only my girlfriend was around to hear about it.
So basically, they allow people on TV to do the same thing? I mean, I didn’t fact check because I didn’t particularly care or feel motivated. But the first rule of calling someone out is to make sure you have your facts straight. That’s like making fun of someone for making a spelling error, and then spelling a word incorrectly in the process.
Not only was he lazy, but man, he must be hurtin’ for work. Really? That’s what you deem newsworthy? Seems like something the paper in Pullman ought to be covering, not some dude from KOMO.
Either way, I’ve never seen Ol’ Nuss so fired up, and it was quite enjoyable, I must say. So I guess there’s the silver lining.

On the outside chance
If he actually responds I expect you will post that on here, right? I sure hope so.
by Wazzu Willy on Nov 20, 2009 8:44 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
I sent him a similar message
Also commented on using this as an example with my publications students of poor standards in journalism and giving away the only thing you have, the trust of your readers, to tell a good story. Don’t expect a response, but I’ll post it here if I get it.

I have not heard back yet, either
Perhaps he’s a busy man.

What I got back.
Mr. Norris –
I would hope you’d brush up on your journalism.
Stripling may not have been charged with anything, but he did sign a contract in respect to behavior that must be maintained in order to continue being a member of the WSU football team.
Simply being arrested and charged breached that contract.
And what makes you think that because he suspended other players that Coach Wulff met his obligations in respect to the situation concerning Stippling?
Your logic makes about as much sense as your indignation.

That would be kinda funny
If it wasn’t sad … especially in that he misspells Stripling’s name.

FUNNY!
He still hasn’t written me back. I guess I shouldn’t expect a response at this point.
The moral? Ken Schram cannot argue with extensive, well-reasoned arguments.

Not only is it shoddy journalism
But the writing is absolutely atrocious. Who told these hacky sportswriters that the one-sentence-per-paragraph style works on ANY level? This “column”/“Schrammie” really does nothing but resort to cheap punning and false cleverness designed to trick the reader into somehow thinking Schram has something to say.
Look at these laughably bad sentences/prhases:
“the football coach…has fumbled the lesson”
You see, it’s a football coach. In football, there is fumbling. Get it?? Clever, right???
“So I’d like to invite coach Paul Wulff to break out of the huddle”
More football stuff!! Oh hahaha it’s so great that I know football references!
“Jason was arrested following a row on Greek Row”
Honestly, who the fuck told anyone that this was good writing? We understand that there is a double meaning here. Hardy har har. It does nothing for your argument to resort to boring wordplay.
“The Wulff-man”
A stupid nickname. Very respectful.
“Way to go coach.”
Missing comma after “go.” Editors?
