Keys to the Game Only Getting Mildly Embarrassed

There aren't any. We're going to get creamed, and there's approximately zero chance it doesn't happen.

Instead, why not read Grippi's story about the seniors? In the midst of what has been a downright awful season, these guys have continued to work their tails off and play hard, despite not having the possibility of a victory most weeks.

seniors

good luck to the seniors – they stayed the course. ( inspite of all the hardships )
Looks like no rain for the apple cup – so some good news ( at least i will not get wet )
Bob R asked Jerry ( in the booth ) to make crowd noise – so attendance must be very small ( schools out, the weather and the record ) reminds me of Bob Uecker in “Major league”-

Jack Daniels

As with Bob Uecker… Jim Walden will have his cups of Jack D right by his side during the game .

TUEL

Is TUEL done for the year?

Maybe

Hasn’t been ruled out next week but I’m not holding my breath

Watching gametracker

Are these designed runs or is Lopina just taking off? I’m guessing he’s running for his life

by Brian Floyd on Nov 21, 2009 2:25 PM PST reply actions

That was 4 minutes of game clock that our defense wasn't on the field

Not sure it’ll make a difference, but hey, we kept our D on the sidelines and gave them a break.

by 02Coug on Nov 21, 2009 2:28 PM PST reply actions

We scored in the first quarter!

WOOOOO!!!

I’m going to the Vandy-UT game today. The only other Vandy game I went to this year was the same night as the SMU game. WE ARE GOING TO WIN! Or not, but atleast it won’t be a shutout.

Anyone watching ND/UConn

Question from ND game

Why do the refs have to measure for first down after the first series. The ball was spotted by the refs at the 25. The ball is sitting on the 15. If it is short, then someone screwed up. That’s all I’m saying.

by 02Coug on Nov 21, 2009 3:12 PM PST reply actions

Yeah, I saw that.

But still don’t get how any ref on the field doesn’t know that’s a first down.

And...

Considering they’ve had some tough losses since then, including Howards childhood friend at Rutgers going 81 yards yards with almost no time left to win, I’d say that’s a cry worthy win

kicking it out of bounds and giving them it at the 40 in this scenario. Worked out about the same.

I’m so not in the mood for that crap today, especially when this is about the best half of football we’ve put together in some time. Get out.

by Jeff Nusser on Nov 21, 2009 3:33 PM PST up reply actions

Wulff sounds just a bit happy

Can’t blame him. Score 10 in the first half and keep OSU under 30 in the first half? Haven’t seen that very often.

by BornCoug on Nov 21, 2009 3:32 PM PST reply actions

Certainly helps when when there are no TOs

When’s the last time we didn’t turn the ball over in a half?

by Scottie44 on Nov 21, 2009 3:33 PM PST up reply actions

It really is...

I mean, we’re still overmatched on the lines but you give yourself so much better of a chance if you’re not constantly giving the ball to the other team. At a minimum, Lopina is taking care of the ball.

Games like this make me think that if we could get decent on the lines we’d be much more competitive.

by Scottie44 on Nov 21, 2009 3:35 PM PST up reply actions

Sounds like the offensive line is playing much better

Actually giving guys a chance. Makes you feel OK about where this team could be next year. Losing Alfred will be huge, but if the other four guys can be better, there’s a chance this team could be MUCH better than we think.

Of course, by MUCH better, I mean like 3 wins …

by Jeff Nusser on Nov 21, 2009 3:39 PM PST up reply actions

mildly competitive football!

by Grady Clapp on Nov 21, 2009 3:32 PM PST via mobile reply actions

I wish I could afford to come over there

I would have made a point to make it for this one, simply because I really admire these seniors. I don’t feel sorry for them, because they get to play college football, but I admire their perseverance, which I think is a quality to be admired.

by Jeff Nusser on Nov 21, 2009 3:35 PM PST up reply actions

Sorry to be a dick, but....

…..I do not care about this game, Yes, we scored a TD…..great now we pissed them off so they score over 40 points in the second half now and beat us 60 something to 10.

Anyways, sorry for that, the reason I stopped by real quick was I just wanted to know if anyone knows how many people are at the game with school being out right now.

by spokanecougar on Nov 21, 2009 3:33 PM PST reply actions

Me too

Although I hate the whole, “You’re not a real Cougar if you think Paul Wulff doesn’t deserve to keep his job” stuff. I don’t think it makes you less of a Cougar to question the direction of the program right now.

That said, I would expect nothing less from a former coach.

by Jeff Nusser on Nov 21, 2009 3:40 PM PST up reply actions

I had the chance to have lunch with him when I was at school

I’ve been an even bigger fan ever since. It was the most entertaining lunch I’ve had and I barely had to talk. He had stories for days and all of them were absolutely hilarious.

But I do agree that questioning the fandom over Paul Wulff isn’t a good thing. It should be fair game to question the program until it’s proven to be on the right track.

by Brian Floyd on Nov 21, 2009 3:43 PM PST up reply actions

Oh, man

I didn’t realize how banged up the defense was. Grippi said with Jones down we’re down to 14 healthy players on D. One of whom is a WR playing at safety and I believe another is an OL playing DL.

by Brian Floyd on Nov 21, 2009 3:53 PM PST reply actions

Very

I just hope they don’t wear down by the end. The more we can keep our O on the field, the better

Maybe we just needed to roster numbers like a HS

Guys possibly playing both ways, no real backups. Makes our guys feel more at home since they are so fresh out of HS.

Who is available on the d-line?

Long, Laurenzi, Sanchez?

I have never seen anything like this although I said that last year.

by BornCoug on Nov 21, 2009 3:57 PM PST up reply actions

I like this spread option stuff we're doing with Lopina

Which makes you wonder: Why the hell weren’t we doing this when he was starting earlier in the year? That’s the kind of stuff that makes people think the coaching staff doesn’t know what they’re doing — it seems like they kind of stubbornly stick to “their thing,” even if it’s not suited for their personnel.

by Jeff Nusser on Nov 21, 2009 3:57 PM PST reply actions

True, very true

And Lopina seems to be playing well.

by 02Coug on Nov 21, 2009 3:59 PM PST up reply actions

That will come up tonight

No question. I have said it. I think they handled Lopina poorly. He’s obviously not the future but it seems they just gave up on him and behind this line you can’t give up on anyone.

If Lopina starts last week do we stay with UCLA? It was over once he gets into the game.

by BornCoug on Nov 21, 2009 3:59 PM PST up reply actions

some issues with Wulff

First, the no huddle is atrocious. I’ve spent so many games thinking about how much we suck I haven’t looked at the details.

Stop this b.s. of throwing to the flat every other play. I hope its just because our o line is banged up and not a real component of the wulff offense.

Those two late touchdowns made it look worse than it really was

Although, we’re never going to have a game where we actually have a shot at winning until we get a real offense. It’s just stunning how bad it is, and it’s going to have to make MAJOR strides for us to have a chance next year.

by Jeff Nusser on Nov 21, 2009 5:17 PM PST reply actions

and they still covered

Told you the WSU athletic dept. should’ve bet the farm on that

by Grady Clapp on Nov 21, 2009 5:22 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

The stats show that...

The game was pretty lopsided even though the score was some what respectable. I think we’d be foolish to think that we played much better than we have been considering Oregon st. played sloppy with penalties which is uncharacteristic of them. they were probably looking ahead and still covered the spread against us.

The stats show we are still a long ways off, but I think we are all so desperate to see improvement that we might be looking a little too hard and over analyzing everything. I don’t think that we can take anything away from this game, or this season for that matter. So many injuries, ridiculous bad luck and us getting our stats somewhat boosted in the passing game due to blowouts make this season a do over. The apple cup is always mysterious, but other than that, close the book on the season and lets go get healthy and get after it next year.

For now I will enjoy basketball and love every minute of it.

by MattPD on Nov 21, 2009 5:24 PM PST up reply actions

This game was 21-10 at half

And you don’t take anything away from that?

by Jeff Nusser on Nov 21, 2009 5:29 PM PST up reply actions

I mean, I'm not doing cartwheels thinking we're all of a sudden a bowl team

But we’re usually down 28-0 five minutes into the game. I don’t know how you can’t be encouraged, especially considering we had 14 guys available on defense, and lost one at the beginning of the game.

I’m with you, however, on the overall sentiment. Thank goodness there is only one more game.

by Jeff Nusser on Nov 21, 2009 5:31 PM PST up reply actions

3 d-linemen

2 of which are freshmen. Guys are beat up.

I thought this game was much much worse. Nothing to feel great about but I don’t know how anyone could expect much better.

by BornCoug on Nov 21, 2009 5:49 PM PST up reply actions

No I really didn't

We played ND good for a quarter when it was 7-0. Did you take anything away from that? We’ve been so dang bad that we think that being down by small double digits for one half of a football game is improvement. I don’t think you learn anything in one half of football. Or one game, that is enough to make suggestions about a teams level of improvement. It’s one game.

Oregon St. knew all the points that you’re bringing up, that we had x amount of injuries at every position and were limited to 14 defenders and they put up 564 yards of offense. I’m not bangin’ on the team, but the facts are we gave up huge amounts of yards and were helped out by 110 yards of Beaver penalties that they don’t normally do. I think it’s nice we hung around points wise for a little bit, but it’s nothing to get excited about.

by MattPD on Nov 21, 2009 6:06 PM PST up reply actions

Yay! More Walden complaining about Riley passing!

It’s so stupid. But, again, spoken like a former coach.
