Keys to the Game Only Getting Mildly Embarrassed
There aren't any. We're going to get creamed, and there's approximately zero chance it doesn't happen.
Instead, why not read Grippi's story about the seniors? In the midst of what has been a downright awful season, these guys have continued to work their tails off and play hard, despite not having the possibility of a victory most weeks.

seniors
good luck to the seniors – they stayed the course. ( inspite of all the hardships )
Looks like no rain for the apple cup – so some good news ( at least i will not get wet )
Bob R asked Jerry ( in the booth ) to make crowd noise – so attendance must be very small ( schools out, the weather and the record ) reminds me of Bob Uecker in “Major league”-
Jack Daniels
As with Bob Uecker… Jim Walden will have his cups of Jack D right by his side during the game .
Like the fans, he needs to bring booze in to survive the game
Probably is cheersing Glenn up there during the game
usually 10 plays will get the other team 2 or 3 scores

After giving up two 20+ yarders we settled in and made them drive
Nice. Hey what’s the first quarter scoring count now? Is the points against over 200 yet?
Opponent's 1st Possession
How many games this year have our opponent scored on their first possession?
A better question is has our opponent ever not scored on their first possession?
I don’t remember any games where they didn’t…maybe Stanford didn’t.
Watching gametracker
Are these designed runs or is Lopina just taking off? I’m guessing he’s running for his life
That was 4 minutes of game clock that our defense wasn't on the field
Not sure it’ll make a difference, but hey, we kept our D on the sidelines and gave them a break.
We scored in the first quarter!
WOOOOO!!!
I’m going to the Vandy-UT game today. The only other Vandy game I went to this year was the same night as the SMU game. WE ARE GOING TO WIN! Or not, but atleast it won’t be a shutout.

Probably the worst start they could imagine
Only thing that would be worse is if they lost to South Dakota
I love Walden
“You mentioned every pac-10 team except OSU is getting their QB back. I wonder how many don’t want theirs back?”
They are 4-4 on 3rd down
and none of them have been shorter that 4 yards

Anyone watching ND/UConn
ND just fumbled away the ball, game tied, 40 seconds left
Yep...been a great finish
Can’t believe that holding call on Uconn last drive…the first holding call.
that's what I was saying to myself...
they seem to always get a call or two in S. Bend.
Yeah, struggling to beat a 4-5 Uconn team..
isn’t the way to “Return to Glory” at ND.
Willingham
when i sent to the ND-WSU game – they had the Ty Willingham story ( return to glory ) in hardback all over the bookstore at ND
I remember that..
also the T-shirts that the students were wearing. The only other thing I remember about that game is how damn hot it was in that stadium. My hangover didn’t help matters any.
two coaches on a "hotter" seat than paul w
charlie w and dennis erickson ( asu is losing to ucla at the half.)
Good news? Only one more week of football.
Bad news? There’s not another basketball game until Wednesday.
I like Gino's productivity
But we need to get other recievers catching some balls.
crowd noise
wonder how they are getting all the crowd noise on the radio ?
Question from ND game
Why do the refs have to measure for first down after the first series. The ball was spotted by the refs at the 25. The ball is sitting on the 15. If it is short, then someone screwed up. That’s all I’m saying.
The ref that spotted it called for the chains to move
The head ref came in and asked for measurement
Yeah, I saw that.
But still don’t get how any ref on the field doesn’t know that’s a first down.
I'm willing to bet it was, already
But that was a nice nail in the coffin. UConn has gotten screwed so many times this year. Nice to see them get one
Gamecast is behind
Was that a screen to Tardy or a pass downfield?
UConn coach crying?
Looks like it a bit. Queue Jim Hanks
Yeah
It’s their first win since their corner Jasper Howard was killed in a stabbing on campus a couple weeks back.
And...
Considering they’ve had some tough losses since then, including Howards childhood friend at Rutgers going 81 yards yards with almost no time left to win, I’d say that’s a cry worthy win
OSU
gaoota love those beavers - 30 yd plus on penalties
OSU playing very un-Beaver like on this drive
No discipline. Interesting
I don't know that I'd totally agree with it being uncharacteristic
They always play to the whistle … and sometimes just a little past. A lot of teams think they’re kinda dirty.
Probably true
They play aggressive. Just not expecting them to make so many mistakes at once.
Good point though
No doubt about it
Have to go for it. Who cares if you get stuffed. Go for it.
Oh geez.
Going for it on 4th. If they don’t get it …
Although, I guess I would wonder if there’s anything that could devastate our players at this point.
Agree with Walden
Don’t go heavy, spread them out and see if Tardy can find something to get in.
Got the radio working just to hear
Touchdown Cougars
1st half excitment
for the first time in a long while- excitment

Gotta disagree with Walden
Our horrible kickoff coverage makes us really vulnerable with a short field on the kick off
Agree with Walden
kicking it out of bounds and giving them it at the 40 in this scenario. Worked out about the same.
competitive game- apple cup
at least – some hope for a competitive game next week ( instead of blowout?)
Banned
I’m so not in the mood for that crap today, especially when this is about the best half of football we’ve put together in some time. Get out.
Wulff sounds just a bit happy
Can’t blame him. Score 10 in the first half and keep OSU under 30 in the first half? Haven’t seen that very often.
Certainly helps when when there are no TOs
When’s the last time we didn’t turn the ball over in a half?
It really is...
I mean, we’re still overmatched on the lines but you give yourself so much better of a chance if you’re not constantly giving the ball to the other team. At a minimum, Lopina is taking care of the ball.
Games like this make me think that if we could get decent on the lines we’d be much more competitive.
Sounds like the offensive line is playing much better
Actually giving guys a chance. Makes you feel OK about where this team could be next year. Losing Alfred will be huge, but if the other four guys can be better, there’s a chance this team could be MUCH better than we think.
Of course, by MUCH better, I mean like 3 wins …
didn't we not turn it over at all against hawaii?
by displacedcoug on Nov 21, 2009 3:43 PM PST up reply actions
maybe I'm confused?
I thought there was a game back around then where we didn’t turn it over once.

All the beatings just kinda blend into one.
I can’t really tell any two games apart.

mildly competitive football!
Wow.
About 10 pct. OSU fans today but more coug fans than you’d expect

I wish I could afford to come over there
I would have made a point to make it for this one, simply because I really admire these seniors. I don’t feel sorry for them, because they get to play college football, but I admire their perseverance, which I think is a quality to be admired.
Sorry to be a dick, but....
…..I do not care about this game, Yes, we scored a TD…..great now we pissed them off so they score over 40 points in the second half now and beat us 60 something to 10.
Anyways, sorry for that, the reason I stopped by real quick was I just wanted to know if anyone knows how many people are at the game with school being out right now.
Me too
Although I hate the whole, “You’re not a real Cougar if you think Paul Wulff doesn’t deserve to keep his job” stuff. I don’t think it makes you less of a Cougar to question the direction of the program right now.
That said, I would expect nothing less from a former coach.
I had the chance to have lunch with him when I was at school
I’ve been an even bigger fan ever since. It was the most entertaining lunch I’ve had and I barely had to talk. He had stories for days and all of them were absolutely hilarious.
But I do agree that questioning the fandom over Paul Wulff isn’t a good thing. It should be fair game to question the program until it’s proven to be on the right track.
Tales from the Washington State-Cougar sidelines
jim’s book is a great read
"just alittle outside "
all jim has to do today … is make this comment … make my day.
Oh, man
I didn’t realize how banged up the defense was. Grippi said with Jones down we’re down to 14 healthy players on D. One of whom is a WR playing at safety and I believe another is an OL playing DL.
Very
I just hope they don’t wear down by the end. The more we can keep our O on the field, the better
Maybe we just needed to roster numbers like a HS
Guys possibly playing both ways, no real backups. Makes our guys feel more at home since they are so fresh out of HS.
Who is available on the d-line?
Long, Laurenzi, Sanchez?
I have never seen anything like this although I said that last year.
I like this spread option stuff we're doing with Lopina
Which makes you wonder: Why the hell weren’t we doing this when he was starting earlier in the year? That’s the kind of stuff that makes people think the coaching staff doesn’t know what they’re doing — it seems like they kind of stubbornly stick to “their thing,” even if it’s not suited for their personnel.
True, very true
And Lopina seems to be playing well.
That will come up tonight
No question. I have said it. I think they handled Lopina poorly. He’s obviously not the future but it seems they just gave up on him and behind this line you can’t give up on anyone.
If Lopina starts last week do we stay with UCLA? It was over once he gets into the game.
Kevin Lopina
kevin ran this style of offense in high school -
When I have written in the past that Wulff's teams have yet to really play over their heads
This is what I wanted to see. They should be getting drilled, but they are actually playing better than they should.
well, no one is actually watching the game, so...
maybe its some sort of radio drama?

i'm assuming robertson and walden are in beasley right now
just making stuff up.
Another stop
Not sure what to make of this. Are we competing? Is this what a chance to win feels like?
Chance being the operative word there
I gave us a 0% chance at kickoff…we’re at least above that now
What is this thing great coverage they keep mentioning?
And passes knocked away.
And, no...
it’s not Theodore Cleaver running wild.
Stanford's Gerhart is good
61 yard TD run against Cal just now
Can't blame them
Defense is decimated. There’s no way they could go a whole game with so few guys available.
Unless the offense controlled the ball
That wasn’t going to happen either. Not a bad performance through 3.
Hail Mary
now mike reilly can throw to the end one… like last year.
Walden doesn't like
the way Tedford and Riley run out games.
meh, it's loser talk
their 2nd string skill guys are in…
valiant thus far
14 players available on D? Younger than ever, more injured than ever… man I wish Kev wouldn’t have fumbled… Riley stinks throwing again w/ a huge lead— take notes young men- the future is yours
If you can't Go Cougs... don't go.
Really?
If you had hope today at all, I don’t see why you would have lost it. They just wore down against a far superior team — one that beat UW a lot worse than this.
Forzani now out
on the kickoff. This is getting to look like a black plague scenario
any word on what happened
to Forzani?

some issues with Wulff
First, the no huddle is atrocious. I’ve spent so many games thinking about how much we suck I haven’t looked at the details.
Stop this b.s. of throwing to the flat every other play. I hope its just because our o line is banged up and not a real component of the wulff offense.
I love jeff tuel. Waved his hands for the crowd to make more noise after a missed P.I. on the beavs

Stanford just had a great goal line stand- Gerhart had a 61 yrd TD- Cards lead 14-3
If you can't Go Cougs... don't go.
Those two late touchdowns made it look worse than it really was
Although, we’re never going to have a game where we actually have a shot at winning until we get a real offense. It’s just stunning how bad it is, and it’s going to have to make MAJOR strides for us to have a chance next year.
and they still covered
Told you the WSU athletic dept. should’ve bet the farm on that

The stats show that...
The game was pretty lopsided even though the score was some what respectable. I think we’d be foolish to think that we played much better than we have been considering Oregon st. played sloppy with penalties which is uncharacteristic of them. they were probably looking ahead and still covered the spread against us.
The stats show we are still a long ways off, but I think we are all so desperate to see improvement that we might be looking a little too hard and over analyzing everything. I don’t think that we can take anything away from this game, or this season for that matter. So many injuries, ridiculous bad luck and us getting our stats somewhat boosted in the passing game due to blowouts make this season a do over. The apple cup is always mysterious, but other than that, close the book on the season and lets go get healthy and get after it next year.
For now I will enjoy basketball and love every minute of it.
I mean, I'm not doing cartwheels thinking we're all of a sudden a bowl team
But we’re usually down 28-0 five minutes into the game. I don’t know how you can’t be encouraged, especially considering we had 14 guys available on defense, and lost one at the beginning of the game.
I’m with you, however, on the overall sentiment. Thank goodness there is only one more game.
3 d-linemen
2 of which are freshmen. Guys are beat up.
I thought this game was much much worse. Nothing to feel great about but I don’t know how anyone could expect much better.
No I really didn't
We played ND good for a quarter when it was 7-0. Did you take anything away from that? We’ve been so dang bad that we think that being down by small double digits for one half of a football game is improvement. I don’t think you learn anything in one half of football. Or one game, that is enough to make suggestions about a teams level of improvement. It’s one game.
Oregon St. knew all the points that you’re bringing up, that we had x amount of injuries at every position and were limited to 14 defenders and they put up 564 yards of offense. I’m not bangin’ on the team, but the facts are we gave up huge amounts of yards and were helped out by 110 yards of Beaver penalties that they don’t normally do. I think it’s nice we hung around points wise for a little bit, but it’s nothing to get excited about.
Yay! More Walden complaining about Riley passing!
It’s so stupid. But, again, spoken like a former coach.
