OPEN HOOPS GAME THREAD: LCSC at WSU
Basketball is finally here! Well, sort of. The Cougs do tip off the public portion of their basketball season at 7 p.m. PST with an exhibition against Lewis-Clark State College at Beasley Coliseum.
The catch? It's not on TV or radio, so unless you're in Pullman, you've got no shot to follow this game.
HOWEVER! We're going to have our intrepid reporter, Grady, liveblogging from the scene (although probably a bit belatedly, since he doesn't get off work until 7 p.m.) through the comments section of this post. And if there are any other CougCenter community members at the game, we'd love for you to chime in with your observations as well. (If you didn't know, you can find CougCenter on your mobile browser at http://mobile.cougcenter.com.)
Also, feel free to use this as your opening night of general college basketball thread, too. I'm watching North Carolina whip Florida International, and will be partaking of some other games as well. You can find most of them at channelsurfing.net if you don't get ESPNU from your provider.
UPDATE: You can follow the game via GameTracker. Thanks to the originally named GoCougs!

I’m excited to watch Jerome Randle and mini-Lebron.

For anyone going to be at the game:
If you could, please let us know the starting line up at least. I’m very curious.
I am heading over there right now
I will post a little on whats going on, just don’t expect any high quality analysis.
Vote for Butch!
I thought we'd go four small and one big
But I was thinking Nik. Wonder if Abe is actually going to be a starter or if they just want to get him more minutes.
Well, I thought that I would log on to the internet and listen to the first Cougar game tonight....
So much for that… I’m at least hoping that this gametracker will work.
13-0
Looks like we’re still playing some D and Casto is all over the glass.
Capers has 2 steals
Lodwick has a 3 and a block.
Casto has 5 board (1 on Off., 4 on Def.)
15 to play in the first half.
Casto Goes Out
And we immediately give up 2 offensive boards
I don't think this season comes down to Harthun making jumpers
I think it comes down to our depth down low.
Haven't seen anything about Motum
Maybe they’re keeping him out for some reason. Surprised he wouldn’t have played yet.
Random Question
Anybody know Bone’s philosophy on offensive rebounding? I’m guessing with a different stance on defense we’ll probably be sending more guys to the offensive glass. I’d like to think Capers can do some damage there.
Grippi said Watson not playing tonight
Hit his head in practice.

Any thoughts on Faisel Aden?
Bone picks up a 6-4 shooting guard out of a Florida JC. He can score and I guess had offers from Oklahoma State and Mississippi State.
Interesting addition.
Yeah, where's the schollie coming from?
http://wsufoundation.wsu.edu/giving/enteramount.asp?Fund=Martin%20Stadium%20Project
Do you guys think we need another guard?
Also, when can he start playing?
Next year
As long as he gets his AA of course.
Someone is on the way out and I hope it isn’t Klay Thompson!
Maybe someone pulls a Rochestie
And gives up a Schollie for the new guy.
Not sure about a transfer, seems to me that we need to balance the classes.
Casto gets a really cool looking block
As the red avatar jumps really high over the black avatar on the gametracker… Fantastic.
Having Baynes
didn’t hurt us in that area either.
By game tracker
seems like the offense flows a lot better with Moore in there. He has quite a few assists too.

Harthun heating up.

Thames
Has at least two turnovers that have cost us 4 points.
beautiful fast break
Moore to thames.
Maybe I underhyped harthun? Looks great

Harthun can play
I think he is being undehyped. The kid can play – wasn’t he player of the game in the state final game with Love and Singler?
Bone’s style of play suits him much better. In the poll I voted him to get 20+ minutes per night.
He had to show you
With a board and put back. Or that’s what it looked like on gametracker.
I'm not surprised
but it may even out in the second half. Good to see Harthun having a nice game…well, see on game tracker.
that is something i do not understand

I'd like to see him post a triple double this year
With blocks being the third…
Game Tracker...
Just made it look like Klay hit about a 35 footer.
LCSX 0-10 from 3
Maybe they are extending the defense a bit?
Nine turnovers.
Yeesh. Looks likes around a sixty possession game.

Brock Motum sure isn't having a good game
Hopefully this will turn around in future games. I had him pegged as a major impact player right away.
He will get there
Game 1. Well, we need him to get there!
Halftime thoughts
Great turnout for an exhibition. About 3/4 of the lower bowl full
About what you’d expect from bone. More offense, less defense. Moore looks phenomenal, I worry about where we’d be without him.
This team is small and thin. We could get beat up by teams with quality big men.
Great shooting and a better job getting to the rim by klay moore thames etc.

Quality Big Men
I could be wrong, but this seems to be a good year for us to have that problem, at least speaking of the Pac10. Seems a lot of teams will be going with a 4 guard look.
very true
No jon brockman no jordan hill
Thank goodness

How is Motum looking?
From the stats it seems like he is not doing well, but do you have any additional thoughts from seeing him in person?
Haven't seen enough yet
He is skinnier than I thought and may be one of those bennett forwards that has more of a guard skillset
by Grady Clapp on Nov 9, 2009 8:03 PM PST via mobile up reply actions
Just got back from the game
Had to leave early because I have an intramural football game at 9. But here are a few observations.
1. Casto will rack up the stats this year. He had tons of looks, some designed plays to him, and he sure rebounded and blocked shots well. He looks thicker too. (he won the tip)
2. Klay slashed to the hoop several times, looked better than last year. He drew contact twice, and was on fire from 3.
3. Thames and Moore both handled the ball well, and they looked like good fits for the up tempo offense. Thames made some good moves to the hoop but didn’t finish well.
4. Harthun and Lodwick both shot the ball well, but didn’t do much else.
5. Motum looked uncomfortable the whole time, he has some adjusting to do. He is also very thin.
6. Overall we took some chances pushing the ball and there were only a coupe of DOH! moments (bad passes, missed Offensive rebounds). We did not look like we are ready to run with the pac-10 though (no surprise, its early).
Vote for Butch!
I agree with all of your observations except #4
I was really impressed with the poise of both Harthun and Lodwick. I feel like they are completely different players under the Bone system. They shot well, but they also played defense well and showed some leadership qualities in their decision making and ball handling. I hate to always compare the new players to the ‘Godfathers’ of the decade, but Harthun really reminded me of Low (minus the constant running around the court to draw opponents off the screen) and Lodwick reminded me of Harmeling (when he still had his shot).
reggie moore is killing it

LCSC vs. Oregon
Anybody read an analysis on that game? I know Oregon won by 15, but just for a fun comparison I’m curious if it was a complete blowout like this is…
They Played Lewis and Clark from Oregon
It is a different school, pretty sure it is Division III.

We'll see a lot more layups by opponents...
this season.
Just hope that our layup numbers > opponent layup numbers.
Sounds like Capers
is still clankin’ bricks. 0-3
Plus the two free throw misses
But he does have 6 boards.
Capers
a work in progress. If he could only get to the rim and finish the missed jumpers wouldn’t bother me so much. I don’t think you can have a zero at guard playing very much as much as I like him.
I hear what you are saying, but Capers may be...
too valuable with his rebounding and defense to leave him on the bench very much.
Clearly though, Bone wants guys on the floor who can score points…from all five guys.
Defensive ability will just be a bonus.
by westsidecougar1 on Nov 9, 2009 8:33 PM PST up reply actions
defense
System wise feels very similar to last year. Against a team like lcsc that can’t shoot, it works like a charm
by Grady Clapp on Nov 9, 2009 8:25 PM PST via mobile reply actions
14 pts,11 boards for Casto.
Numbers are prettier when there are more possessions.
CougCenter WSU's second main blog
No question about it
Hopefully Thames comes along as well.
bad night for capers
Great night for moore, esp. passing. Taylor who?
by Grady Clapp on Nov 9, 2009 8:36 PM PST via mobile reply actions
Bad Night?
He only scored two but he only had 1 TO, 8 Reb, 2 ast, 2 Steals. That is not a bad night by any means. He didn’t directly contribute points wise, but he excels in a lot of other areas.
Cal having a tough time with murray State
30-26 late in the first half
Murray State is supposed to be the best in their conference.
H/T to CGB for that information.

I was wondering
They always seem to be in the Tournament.
Hope he is alright
Hopefully not a concussion. He’s had a tough time w/ injuries of different sorts.
Didn't that happen a few weeks ago?
Or is this a second “hit his head” incident?
Not sure.
Grippi’s post today just said he was sitting out after “banging his head in practice.”

Even though this win was expected
Can I just say how good it feels to see a WSU team actually dominate again? Football season has been draining and depressing me.
Watching ESPNU's mini-preview of the Pac 10.
The guy who isn’t Andy Katz thinks UCLA should be picked under UO, OSU, and UA. He also said the NW is relevant again! (When did we go away?) But of course, he only mentioned the Oregon schools and UW.
Katz did say his players to watch are Klay Thompson and Nic Wise.
CougCenter WSU's second main blog
I'm wondering if the Watson concussion issue is bigger than we thought
I still think Enquist loses his scholarship. Wouldn’t be surprised to see a transfer that doesn’t fit with the up tempo.
Enquist wouldn't be a surprise
But that’s still only two open spots. That means they’re counting on a third if they’re still actively looking for one more guy. Tough to speculate at this point.
The Watson head injury reminds me of Sauls
Granted Sauls had another underlying issue but if he’s still not practice now, seems like it was pretty serious. Until we actually do go out and grab a third commit, who knows, though
Just looking at the scholarship players today...
I’m thinking Anthony Brown might try transfering? He doesn’t look like a Bone recruit, but he is a freshman so it is hard to tell.
Congrats on the win fellas. Way to TCOB.
Any body else watching the Cal game? Murray State’s making a late push.
The refs are giving them a hand.
They’ve been to the line each of the last, what, 4 times down the floor? And that Randle dribble off the foot was a questionable call at best.
Did you read those excerpts of Tim Donaghy's book on Deadspin?
I’m certain that every time questionable calls keep the game close I’m going to start thinking about the spread…
by johnnycougar on Nov 9, 2009 10:07 PM PST up reply actions
Haha, no I didn't see that. Used to read Deadspin a lot, but haven't in a long time.
Not sure what the spread was for this game, but I’m guessing Murray State covered.
It's worth a read
If even half of it is true you’ll never look at the NBA the same way again. Unless you always figured it was scripted.

I’m thinking of betting on Bavetta games this year.

No joke, get your bets in now
Sounds like he’s retiring after this year, too. The NBA has a nice mess on it’s hands
I know!
I love that Donaghy hardly holds back at all. Just a straight shooter. The book is on my Christmas list.

Well after what happened it's easy to see why he lets it fly
Stern has a mess on his hands in many ways
I do wonder if it is going to blow up to be a bigger deal than people realize
by johnnycougar on Nov 9, 2009 10:37 PM PST up reply actions
Doubtful
The publisher cut the book off so nobody in the outside world knows it exists. The NBA doesn’t want it seeing the light of day
Back from the game...
Here are my thoughts on everybody…
Reggie Moore- WOW! The best passer I have ever seen at WSU. He threw 2 or 3 alley oops and also had a sick one handed bounce pass to Klay Thompson in transition. Very disruptive with his defense playing passing lanes very aggressively. Seems to be the perfect point guard for Bone’s system. I did see some of that loss of attention that Bone talks about defensively. A couple of times the guy who he was guarding was on the other side of the court and he seemed to have no idea. Against a Pac 10 team, that would have led to an easy three pointer or lay-up.
Marcus Capers- Hit and miss here. Great defense like we all know and was a force on the boards getting something like 3 offensive rebounds I think. Some steals and some nice passes. However, shot looked AWFUL. One wide open mid range shot from the left baseline hit the side of the back board. Yikes.
Klay Thompson- We all know how good he is. Great looking stroke hitting all 4 of his three pointers we all know that. What was evident was how much better he was at driving to the hole. He stayed low, had a good dribble, and had some creative finishes around the hole. Also, his defense was good as he was always in the right position. I dont know if anyone scored on him all night.
Abe Lodwick- Silky stroke looked good on the first shot. One of those shots everyone in the arena knows is going in. The rest of the time he was kind of a non factor offensively. What surprised me was he seemed to have some decent hops. I dont know how many rebounds he had, but he was right there on a whole bunch of them and he let Dee take a couple away from him. He should be just fine playing the 4.
Deangelo Casto- Showed some good moves offensively and was a BEAST on the boards. Hands seemed improved as he caught a couple of tough passes in traffic. Took a great charge in the first half as well. Did a good job of staying out of foul trouble. However, he left his guy way to many times to go for the block. Doesn’t seem like hes changed that all since last year. His guy would get the offensive rebound or receive a pass then miss a lay up. Not going to happen against better competition.
MIke Harthun- The surprise of the game for me. His shot was money! First shot he hit (either a long 2 or a 3) was with a hand right in his face and it was nothing but net. He was hitting shots all day especially from the midrange area. Looked solid defensively as well. He seems like the perfect 6th man with the quick scoring he can bring off the bench.
Nik- Don’t like him at all as a player but looked more comfortable in this system. His he gonna be a great player? No. Can he be solid? Yes. He made some nice cuts to the hoop for some layups and played some decent defense. Looked better dribbling the ball and passing and my make reconsider his nickname of TOM (turnover machine.)
Xavier Thames- Seemed a little nervous early then settled down. Some bad shots and risky ball handling early. Then he was very very solid. Some nice finishes with contact around the hoop. Had a good feel for the offense and was in good position defensively. Seems like he was the perfect point for bennett, but he will be solid for Bone.
Brock Motum- A little bit disappointing for me. I was expecting a lot more form him offensively. He seemed to just kind of hang on the outside and wait for the ball and never really drove to the hole with that craftiness we had heard about. Was decent defensively and on the boards, but was a little timid today offensively.
Charlie Enquist- Ehhh. O.K. Moved around decently and did have some good bounce to him. However, seems to be the definition of a non factor offensively. Seems to be a player that will be played about 10 minutes a game to help defensively when Casto needs a breather.
John Allen- Wasn’t real impressed. Nothing good seemed to happen when touched the ball and he was a step and a half slow defensively. It seems like we have enough guard depth to where he shouldnt need to play tho.

The best passer you've ever seen?
Better than the one and only Kyle Weaver?
ha
Weaver is my favorite Coug ever but even I’ll admit he was capable of a few stupid passes a game.
