Condotta on the recently reported UW violations
At this point, most of you have heard about the secondary violations allegedly involving UW player hosts buying alcohol for underage recruits.
In the interest of fairness, the link above takes you to yesterday's report from Bob Condotta via his Husky blog. The UW athletic department has told him there was nothing about alcohol on the report to the NCAA, and that the term "nightclub" shouldn't necessarily suggest a 21-and-over club.
However, you can read that as you wish -- the UW does not explicitly deny that there was alcohol involved, only that it wasn't in the violation report. Additionally, they also refused to comment on the alcohol portion of the report when asked directly by KING 5 reporter Lisa Gangel. So make of that what you will.
EDIT, 4:06 p.m.: Condotta has posted the actual report of the incident here. Read it for yourself and make of it what you will. However, I've been told by someone who deals with these sorts of things that it's common practice for the university to only be this specific in their reports and only comment on what's specifically in the report, especially if the punishment has already been accepted by the conference. So it might not be wise to read too much into a "no comment."

I am surprised at the UW fan's responce from this
they are so fired up that King-5 reported the story on the same day as the Locker news. I really don’t know enough about this story or the history of King-5 reporting about UW, but I don’t get why they are so bend out of shape. If a story like this came out about WSU on the same day we won the apple cup, I would not care. When I got around to caring, I can’t say I would boycott a TV station and join facebook groups blasting the reporting.

They're a pretty paranoid bunch
For being so confident about so many things.

For once, I agree with the UW POV
The thing that King 5 is reporting on happened in Sark’s first week of being head coach. Almost a year later, they announce this news. The information had been out there for a year, but it just happens to come out on this day… It could be a coincidence, in fact, it probably is… But I don’t see why it took them so long to announce it.

Where have I heard that argument before
Oh, right, Victory in Ruins

My guess?
They probably knew about it, but heard from a source recently that alcohol was involved.

It's because this story is 11 months old...
it’s just fishy. I for one am more angered at the way it was run. It was the lead story on King-5’s 11 o’ clock news, not the sports segment, but the opening of the broadcast. It’s all just sensationalisim, and I don’t get why they had to play it up so much.

You expect more from television "journalists"?
This is hardly out of character.

No...
let me state that shock is not one of my emotions in regards to this story. That doesn’t change the fact that it pisses me off. I’d like to think that one day television production professionals will live by a set of ethics, but I don’t get my hopes up.

"I don’t get my hopes up."
Good plan.

I didn't realize they ran it as the lead
I guess they’ll do anything with what they think is a hot scoop. This just in: college kids may or may not drink and booze and women may or may not be used in recruiting.

Tennessee fans everywhere are shocked at this fact

Somewhere, Lane Kiffin is blaming Urban Meyer for this

This has nothing to do with the comments

But I thought it was funny and had to post it.

What else could you spend $300 on in a nightclub?
100 Shirley Temples?

Depends on the kind of "nightclub" ...
by Jeff Nusser on Dec 16, 2009 12:13 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
That was my thought
It was either booze or lapdances, neither of which would reflect well on them

its not a night club
… probably one of many bowling alley/video game/pub types of places that are not uncommon around college campuses. I’m betting this case it is Dante’s.
The fact that this was public information almost 12 months ago makes this whole wave of news a little silly. I don’t see anyone re-reporting news on any other topic that happened a year ago.
Damn, my eyeball tastes good.

Yes, because it's so easy to rack up a $300 bill bowling and playing video games
Gosh, how could we have thought it was something more tawdry?

the recruiting rulebook
must be about as thick as the phone book. seems like you can get a penalty for anything and everything.

Think more like 20 phonebooks
And you’d be getting closer.

Ummm...can you repeat the question?
Gangel: “So you can’t confirm or deny that it was or was not alcohol?”
UW spokesman: “That’s correct.”

When will the bottom fall out?
Sarkisian is going to do something that warrants a major violation at some point. It just seems like a matter of time but this incident isn’t it.
Recruiting trips have always scared the you know what out of me. College kids playing host at night. It just seems like a recipe for disaster. If you think WSU recruits never have a drink you are probably very wrong. I hope that doesn’t happen and in Pullman it probably doesn’t happen as much because the access to clubs isn’t as great. It only takes one door guy to look the other way for something like this to happen though.
The SID answering King 5 was pretty funny. “That’s correct”. Wouldn’t you love to know what was running through his mind?

UW isn't USC
The NCAA doesn’t turn a blind eye to recruiting violations.
If it was underaged drinking at a club, that could not only screw UW, the players who took them, and the recruits, but also would shut down the club. The more likely scenario is that they went to Rick’s

The Acropolis in Portland is really the best...
top notch steaks and great talent. I used to live in Salem, OR when I was about 19-20 and was friends with a few at Foxxes down there, a couple were actually putting themselves through school. Debunking that stripper myth.
But for Lake City…The Vu is the best.

All WA clubs are crap.
For a state as liberal as we are, the “adult entertainment” laws are pretty prudish.

Who the hell doesn't allow booze in a strip club?
And that’s in addition to the other rules

Ah the good ol' WA Liquer Control Board
I’m just starting the process of applying for a craft distillery licence so I’m looking forward to dealing with those clowns.

Glass houses come to mind here....
I hate it when people bring up any WSU alcohol issues, with regards to athletes and others, and doesn’t acknowledge that it is a larger problem. While Pullman lacks the type of “adult” entertainment that may have occurred here, there is no way I would ever say that our recruits haven’t been taken to an event or place where they were served alcohol against recruiting policies.
I’m not saying it isn’t a big deal, but it’s not a huge deal. And it’s one that many, many more schools are probably often in violation of as I’m sure everyone here would agree. King 5’s timing is interesting on this one, even if the alcohol aspect was news.
