A quickly compiled ranking of terrible calls in Cougar history 1998-present
1. The clock running out in the 1998 Rose Bowl
2. Tonight's technical foul with 0.3 seconds left
3. The backwards pass
4. The last minute against #1 Stanford, 2004
5. The foul that sent Maarty Leunen to the line to tie the game
6. Aaron Brooks clearly travels before passing to Malik Hairston for the game winner (not on TV so it doesn't get as much press)
7. The last few minutes of the Arizona basketball game in '04 that the Pac-10 actually apologized for days later.
Three of those against the #%#^ing Ducks in basketball.

to be honest....
the rose bowl call doesn’t really bother me all that much. if we had won that game, michigan fans would’ve been eating their young over the missed Offensive PI call on Nian.
I’d also add the billion late hit calls against Notre Dame in 2003.
So tonight's call is #1?
It might be. That’s so sad. I really thought this kind of bulls*** in college sports was over.
lol
my friends wouldn’t let me update my blog for months because they wanted that to stay up top forever….
Gibson's TD denied
in the Arizona St. game was a crucial call that most likely cost the Cougs the game and a bowl that season. Knee down is ball down… all the nonsense about losing the ball out fo bounds was moot. That call is my #4. Go Cougs
If you can't Go Cougs... don't go.
I was at 5 of the 6 up there before tonight.
I was thinking to myself during the 2nd half that I would not destroy my TV should lightning strike for the 436245763827456387463 time. I just hate oregon more now. Probably not rational, but that’s the way it is.
I just couldn't believe it
Plus my Dad and I alternated mad and calm at differing times. I really thought we’d have it in the second OT. We really should’ve fouled anyone not named Tajuan Porter in the first OT. Oregon would’ve had one-and-ones.
Tonight was almost the worst ever, but...
I was at a game against UCLA where one of the O’Bannon brothers went up threw the hoop to knock out a game winning shot. In the ensuing scramble they called an intentional foul on Eddie Harris.
Also, remember the Arizona game when they had stoudamire and we were up 9 with 45 seconds left… a foul on the crowd helped Zona win that one.
disgraceful.
I was at the game, can someone please tell me what
it was like on TV. Casto scores and the whistle blows right as it goes in. I am celebrating thinking DC has a chance at a 3 pt play next thing I know we have a tech. I would like the game official to explain the whistle. What was it for as DC didn’t get his and 1.
Worst calls:
AZ @ WSU in football. Hailmary to the endzone to win and officials give TD signal despite everyone seeing the ball hit the turf. Officials fired at the end of the season.
MBK- Early 90s I believe at UCLA where we put up the winning shot and UCLA player reaches through the basket and tips the ball out. Officials completely miss it.
TV angle
Casto made a basket and we thought he was fouled and was going to shoot free throws after the time out. Next thing we know is that a technical has been called on the WSU bench and Porter is shooting free throws. He tied the game we went to a second OT. The TV showed 3 WSu players with feet inside the court. One of them slapped Casto with a towel, but it was during the timeout.
In the second OT, on the OSN TV broadcast, they showed one replay of the Oregon player driving for the final layin. From the angle of the replay, you could see one Oregon player who jumped onto the court from the bench in celebration when the shot went into the basket. The announcers even admitted as much. There may have been more UO players on the court celebrating, but I cannot say because as I said the angle of the camera shown only the one player.
Similarly to the Casto bucket, a timeout was also called as the circumstances were exactly the same. A technical should have called on the Oregon bench if you are going by the letter of the rule especially since they called it on WSU.
What was the talk at Friel?
Watching the replay on ESPN
(with voiceover-so no live sound) one of the officials signals 2 points, but none signal for a stop in play. The guy along the baseline is just standing there, but none of the Duck players is preparing to inbound. The players on the court were not impeding play as they weren’t preparing to play on. Then the TO.
Bad judgement by the refs, plain and simple.

From an Oregon fan
I watched the game tonight and was appalled at the final call at the end of the first OT (plus, it totally hides the fact that Ernie Kent should have called a TO after the 3 to set up his defense and didn’t and now I can’t bitch about him screwing the game).
Anyway, I wanted to say I am sorry for what happened. It was a great game and both teams played their hearts out and for it to end in such controversy and horse-crap is a travesty and I would be belligerent and pissed had that happened the other way.
Good luck the rest of the season and looking forward to the rematch.
LET CH3 RETURN KICKS!!!!
Just watched the replay
First thing I noticed was that one coug player did come out on the court and touch casto in congratulations so the key is whether a timeout was called or not. If not then that call might have had to be made. The next thing on Oregon’s game winner the Oregon player leads with his forearm and pushes of while I believe it was klay stood straight up with his arms vertical therefore it should have been an offensive foul. Lastly Oregon’s bench players were out to the three point line celebrating and should have been issued a tech as well. So if the game was officiated properly it would have been no basket due to a charge and then we would have been shooting technical foul free throws with .5 left to win the game.

Hey, we made sportscenter!
Just like we always do when we lose in horrific fashion.
If we were UCLA or North Carolina, by the way, this becomes a national outrage.
Does Tim Donaghy have any ties to oregon?

haha Hadnt tohught of that.
He did just get out of jail…
1978
Back before every game was on TV and when John Wooden still coached UCLA the Cougars were robbed of their first victory in Pauley decades before Bennettlball. The Cougs led by one with 9 seconds left, Marty Giovacchini was at the line shooting a one and one. This was before the three point line. Marty made the first shot which would guarantee at least a tie, and since he was a 80% foul shooter you had to like his chance to make the second and guarantee the victory. But wait. One of the officials blows the whistle and waves off the made free throw, a Cougar (Stuart House) was in the lane to early. At least that was the call. UCLA inbounds the ball and David Greenwood hits a baseline jumper as time expires to win the game 60-59. The fact that replays of the game showed that it was Greenwood in the lane too soon, not House didn’t change the score and the Cougs would wait another 3 decades before finally beating the Bruins at Pauley.
