Around SBN: Kentucky Basketball: Where the Wildcats Stand as of Today

Open awesome sports day thread

Let's see, UNC/Kentucky this morning, Cincy/Pitt coming down to the final 1:36, then USC/Arizona, SEC Championship, Gonzaga/Wake Forest, Big 12 championship, Cougs/K-State and the Washington state 4A high school championship featuring WSU's future QB.

If you want a place to talk about all of it, you've now got it. I'm only sorry it wasn't up earlier.

Apparently.

SC fans jump off the bandwagon pretty quick. They defnitely don’t have a full house at home today.

by Scottie44 on Dec 5, 2009 12:43 PM PST reply actions

I'd hate to see how bad they would draw if they stunk...

Oh wait, I saw that back in 2000 when the Cougs won down in LA. If I remember correctly, that was a very pathetic crowd.

by Scottie44 on Dec 5, 2009 12:52 PM PST up reply actions

Ugh, I hate ESPN

“Breaking News: Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops is lead candidate for Notre Dame coaching job. He denies it.”

Since when is someone possibly become a lead candidate for a job considered “Breaking News?” ESPN needs to just shut up about Notre Dame… It has really become annoying how obsessed they are with them.

by GoCougs on Dec 5, 2009 1:03 PM PST reply actions

They obsess about a lot of things

It’s the reason why people start to hate Brett Favre, Tim Tebow, etc.

by Jeff Nusser on Dec 5, 2009 1:16 PM PST up reply actions

Notre Dame is gonna botch the head coach search again

Also, don’t pay attention to any of the rumors. They’ve already linked Stoops, Kelly, Meyer, and every other name coach in the NCAA to the job.

I doubt any of the big boys will be jumping ship before their bowl game.

by Brian Floyd on Dec 5, 2009 1:17 PM PST up reply actions

Also, this:

“The Oklahoma coach has officially rejected Notre Dame. “I will not be the next coach at Notre Dame.” The Irish had a week to coax him and were unable to do so. He’ll say there were no meetings or talks; believe it if you want."

I hope this thing ends quick. I was tired of it BEFORE Charlie was canned

Tony Pike

Does he remind anyone else of Ryan Leaf?

Like,

by ClosetCoug on Dec 5, 2009 1:04 PM PST reply actions

He's a lot skinnier

And doesn’t seem to have the same arm. Nor have I heard any tales of petulence. But other than that …

by Jeff Nusser on Dec 5, 2009 1:17 PM PST up reply actions

I guess teams don't like defense this weekend

Lots of high scores so far. 10 finals, 5 games with at least one team over 35 points.
LA Tech – 45, SJ St. – 14
E Car – 38, Houston – 32
Cinci – 45, Pitt – 44
Fresno -53, Illinois -52
Ore – 37, Ore St. – 33

by GoCougs on Dec 5, 2009 1:10 PM PST reply actions

Nope

Because then the BCS can say the system works. I want as many undefeated teams as possible. Five would be nice.

by Jeff Nusser on Dec 5, 2009 1:19 PM PST up reply actions

Good point

I just have absolutely 0 interest in a Fla/Bama vs Texas national title.

I do, however have interest in games with some combination of TCU/BSU/Cincy playing each other. Those would be fun to watch.

If they could match up TCU/BSU/Cincy/Oregon, I think it would make for entertaining games.

by Brian Floyd on Dec 5, 2009 1:23 PM PST up reply actions

The More The Better

I’d love to see as many undefeated teams as possible. Keep dooming the BCS until we get a playoff!

How are you, Nuss?

GOOD!

Grading papers while watching football. That’s not so good.

Watch Halliday outplay Heaps tonight

I’ll do backflips if it happens. Ferris might surprise Skyline

by Brian Floyd on Dec 5, 2009 1:30 PM PST reply actions

Awesomeness

I would love to see Ferris win tonight!

by I Remember Richie Zisk on Dec 5, 2009 1:32 PM PST up reply actions

Skyline looked shaky at times

And great at times. All I’ve heard is Heaps, Heaps, Heaps in Seattle. Halliday has quietly been killing it at Ferris this year though. I haven’t seen him play, yet, so I’m curious

by Brian Floyd on Dec 5, 2009 1:33 PM PST up reply actions

I Watched Him

Halliday looked very good when I watched him in the playoffs this year. He’s accurate and makes good decisions. If the Ferris defense can help the team, Ferris has a real shot.

by I Remember Richie Zisk on Dec 5, 2009 1:35 PM PST up reply actions

Keep the ball out of Kasen's hands and pressure Heaps

Do that and they’ve got a shot. I think Halliday’s arm will keep them close til the end. Would LOVE to see the eastside team beat the golden boys from the plateau.

by Brian Floyd on Dec 5, 2009 1:37 PM PST up reply actions

Skyline Fatigue

I just tire of hearing how great the Westies are when Eastern Washington has some great teams.

Wenatchee and Eisenhower could have given some of the western teams a good run, but they both had to face Ferris.

by I Remember Richie Zisk on Dec 5, 2009 1:39 PM PST up reply actions

I agree

I never hear anything about the eastside teams from over here but I know they’ve got some great ones. The GSL is usually really strong, but nobody over here has a clue until state. When they do find out about them, they’re shocked some little eastside team could beat their westside powerhouses.

by Brian Floyd on Dec 5, 2009 1:41 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah

If the playoff system allowed for more than one Eastern Washington team to move out of the quarterfinals, we could have seen two GSL or two Big 9 teams face off in the late 90s and early 2000s. This year we may have seen some more Eastern teams reach the quarters this year. Would be interesting.

Is It Just Me

Or does a personal foul by the leading team always seem to kick start the trailing team?

by I Remember Richie Zisk on Dec 5, 2009 1:42 PM PST reply actions

Does Anybody Know

Of a way to follow the high school games online as they’re being played right now?

by I Remember Richie Zisk on Dec 5, 2009 1:46 PM PST reply actions

Thanks!

I love the high school football championships. I intended to go again this year but am sick as a dog. Bleh.

I'm so tired of the SEC

that I am in no way sad for missing the Florida-Bama matchup today. ESPN is ruining my ability to be a sports fan.

Yea, I never watch SportCenter anymore

Since all they talk about is anything New York, Boston, the SEC, and the Cowboys. Now they have their LA studio they seem be bringing the Lakers into the fold as well.

I remember when they actually showed highlights of every game from about every sport, not just a few select big media markets.

by spokanecougar on Dec 5, 2009 2:58 PM PST up reply actions

I rarely watch ESPN, except live sporting events.

But I watched SportsCenter the other day in hopes of seeing the highlights of the Zags game, but instead I got half an hour of SEC title game coverage.

We have a legit chance to win the conference this year

Such a down year for the whole conference we might sneak in there.

by spokanecougar on Dec 5, 2009 3:10 PM PST up reply actions

Honestly, I think UW will take the conference

Anywhere between 2nd and 4th is possible for us. With as bad as it’s looking right now, second is very possible

by Brian Floyd on Dec 5, 2009 3:11 PM PST up reply actions

They are good, I give them that

But they have struggled against Wright State, San Jose State, and Montana at home and then lost in the first road game they had. They are vulnerable this year and will lose some games they shouldn’t, Texas Tech being one,

The being said, I do agree with you that they are probably going to win the conference, but this year anything can happen as we have seen so far.

by spokanecougar on Dec 5, 2009 3:17 PM PST up reply actions

I think they're the frontrunner but by no means a lock

Every team has some glaring weakness and it really could be wide open from top to bottom. The TT game was a loss that shouldn’t have been a loss. Stupid mistakes and a few questionable calls lost them the game. They looked shaky but have kept winning which is really what it’s all about right now. At this point, the top two teams are the Washington schools.

by Brian Floyd on Dec 5, 2009 3:20 PM PST up reply actions

UW needs Breshers to get in shape

Breshers gives them a pretty good Brockman-like player. Right now I think they miss Brockman a lot and they aren’t getting much out of Gaddy yet. I had UW winning the league last summer but Cal is still without Theo Robinson.

Right now the Pac 10 is looking like a mess and WSU is right there if they can improve their play in some areas. I agree that Kent’s seat is getting hot. He has managed to survive but with their talent they should be playing better than they are right now.

by BornCoug on Dec 5, 2009 3:18 PM PST up reply actions

I am kind of glad Breshers did not go to WSU now

We need post help this year, but he cannot even play for UW who needs big men also. I remember we were one of his final schools during his recruiting process. .

by spokanecougar on Dec 5, 2009 3:21 PM PST up reply actions

He was hurt last year and hasn't played

I would love to have him. Romar has already put him in the starting lineup even though he is out of shape and rusty. He’s an athletic player with really good size despite his height with really long arms. He would have fit nicely with Casto.

I would have really liked to get Angus Brandt. He would probably be starting now next to Casto.

by BornCoug on Dec 5, 2009 3:24 PM PST up reply actions

I would too

He’s the answer down low. Imagine him and Casto in the post. We wouldn’t have a rebounding problem at all. I bet we could develop him much better here, too.

by Brian Floyd on Dec 5, 2009 3:27 PM PST up reply actions

Really?

He might have been hurt last year, but it is known he is totally out of shape and has shown little effort to get into shape and be the player everyone thought he would be in high school.

Now if he works into shape and becomes a factor then maybe I will change my thinking, but right now, no, I am glad he is not wasting a scholarship that could be used to get a player who wants to play Pac-10 basketball, if he signed here we would might not have Moore, Thames, Casto or any of our other pretty darn good freshmen or sophomores because he would have taken that scholarship.

by spokanecougar on Dec 5, 2009 3:33 PM PST up reply actions

On Moore, Thames, Casto

We still would have had those guys. They took James Watson when Breshers went to Miami and then signed with the UW. We wouldn’t have taken Watson. I would argue Breshers is doing more off his redshirt year than Watson.

by BornCoug on Dec 5, 2009 3:36 PM PST up reply actions

He'd have Enquist's scholly

I think he’s going to end up being in shape and being fine down low. Look at our 4 spot right now. He’s better than anything we’ve got.

by Brian Floyd on Dec 5, 2009 3:36 PM PST up reply actions

Takes more than a year, too

Remember Rochestie? As soon as the brace came off he was a different player. Same goes for Nik. He’s never been the same and is finally showing the things he was before his injury

by Brian Floyd on Dec 5, 2009 3:39 PM PST up reply actions

Robertson and Kamp may be out longer than we think

Breshers is really having trouble. I think Bryan-Amaning is more the answer at that spot. That said their team will only go as far as Pondextor and IT take them. Not unlike ours with Klay/Casto/Moore(?)

by Brian Floyd on Dec 5, 2009 3:23 PM PST up reply actions

Bryan-Amaning

Classic enigma guy. He’s definitely talented but doesn’t seem to have a good understanding of the game a lot of times. He will have a good game followed by a couple of games where he looks really poor.

Just think if they had Charles Garcia? I wish Bone could have got involved with him after he didn’t get into the UW.

by BornCoug on Dec 5, 2009 3:28 PM PST up reply actions

Romar is probably pretty pissed at admissions for that

It’s odd he couldn’t get into UW but could get into Seattle U, a private Jesuit school.

by Brian Floyd on Dec 5, 2009 3:29 PM PST up reply actions

Private schools

Private schools can get kids in more easily than some public schools. The UW has always been tough for JC to enter. I don’t think they have “special admits”. Some years WSU is very tough to get into as well.

by BornCoug on Dec 5, 2009 3:32 PM PST up reply actions

Oregon looks awful

I watched a few minutes and they look exactly like they did last year. I really thought they had a chance to rebound from last year but they look like a team that rolled out of bed and headed up to the gym to play.

by BornCoug on Dec 5, 2009 3:10 PM PST up reply actions

That wont ever happen

If they haven’t been able to pry him from Gonzaga yet its not ever going to happen. They would have fired Kent long ago if Few just would say yes to them.

by spokanecougar on Dec 5, 2009 3:24 PM PST up reply actions

Oh, I know

It doesn’t mean they won’t flirt with him and try to entice him every year. I don’t think Dunlap is the answer for Oregon, either. If the right circumstances present themselves or Few thinks he’s hit his ceiling, I could see him jumping.

Not to scare anybody, but did anyone see this Klay Thompson write up by Chad Ford?

“Klay Thompson, SG, Washington State

Thompson won a number of fans with his play for Team USA this summer and he’s following it up with a scintillating start for the Cougars this season. The son of former NBA forward Mychal Thompson, Klay is proving that he may be able to live up to his dad’s legacy. Over the first five games of the season Thompson averaged 28 ppg while shooting a red-hot 57 percent from 3. He hit his first real speed bump against Gonzaga on Wednesday night. The Zags held him to a season-low 15 points on 6-for-21 shooting. Still, it’s hard not to be impressed with what Thompson brings to the table. While Thompson lacks elite athleticism, he may be the best pure shooter in the country. The competition has been a little watered down, but if Thompson can maintain his pace against better opponents he’ll be a first round pick — and could be this year’s version of Stephen Curry."

Lost to Portland and Montana although both are better than maybe their “name” would suggest. They look ugly against Mizzou.

I will be very happy if Florida losses

I hate both teams and everything SEC, but I cannot stand Florida and the annoying man crush everyone has on Tebow.

by spokanecougar on Dec 5, 2009 3:55 PM PST reply actions

Yeah, Alabama is crushing Florida

Florida had several close calls this year, their luck has finally run out.

by Coug1990 on Dec 5, 2009 4:06 PM PST up reply actions

They're just not as good as they were

Simple as that. But Tebow also makes a lot of mistakes a fourth-year QB shouldn’t make. Retreating in that pocket last play was just the latest one.

by Jeff Nusser on Dec 5, 2009 4:08 PM PST up reply actions

Like that one

Look at how he’s constantly backing up in the pocket. He doesn’t trust his protection, didn’t make the right throw.

by Jeff Nusser on Dec 5, 2009 4:10 PM PST up reply actions

For four years, he has played downhill

Meaning his team is always ahead. His team has some adversity and they don’t know how to handle the situation.

This is why the BB game against Gonzaga may be a great learning experience for the Cougars.

By the way, Gonzaga is down 9 with 8 min left.

by Coug1990 on Dec 5, 2009 4:18 PM PST up reply actions

Too bad, ESPNU is not on many cable or satelite systems

The huskkies are killing Cal right before the half 21-3. The last six quarters, the huskies have outscored their opponents 51-3. Does that number sound familiar?

by Coug1990 on Dec 5, 2009 4:55 PM PST up reply actions

On ESPN they said

“Alabama win the SEC championship and PERHAPS the right to play in the NC”

by spencer peaty on Dec 5, 2009 4:58 PM PST reply actions

More FSN silliness

Angie Mentink and Jason Stiles are sitting on the shores of Lake Washington doing the halftime show … with a UW helmet on their desk. I can only assume this game is being broadcast back to the Bay Area. Or maybe each market is doing its own halftime show. Either way, there are northwest fans who don’t watch the game because they love UW …
