Moving to Pullman (help)
Well it's official my wife and I are moving to Pullman. My wife will be starting at WSU in the fall and we know absolutely nothing about the area. We are moving from Baton Rouge, LA; however, I attended school at UTexas.
I thought I would attempt to find some advice on locating an apartment near campus and find a job nearby as well. If you are feeling friendly please steer me in the direction of getting acquainted with WSU. Ready to become a Cougar fan !
Thanks
Dustin Earnest

Have Tony Bennett show you around!
His wife is from Baton Rouge, you know.
In all seriousness, there are tons of apartments. Just kind of depends what you’re looking for — it’s such a small town there’s really nowhere that’s too far away or anything. The only job I had at WSU was working for the Daily Evergreen, so I’m not the best source of job advice.
Pullman is a great college town. Make sure you get a beer at The Coug and eat a Super Basket at the Cougar Country Drive Inn. It doesn’t get any better than that.

Abelskivers at "The Ol' European"
Best breakfast in town.

Military Hill
There are great houses for rent (very inexpensive) and the bus routes are awesome and take you straight to campus. I love Pullman, and miss it on a daily basis.

what kind of job are you looking for?
You can probably find work in Pullman but may have to commute to Spokane (~80 minutes).
For information about Pullman in general, the chamber of commerce website is pretty useful (http://www.pullmanchamber.com/), especially the “relocation” and “visitor information” tabs.
Since your wife will be a student, you could get a University-owned apartment. I’ve lived in those before – you generally get pretty good maintenance, free parking, cable tv / water / sewage all included, very close to campus for between $500 and $700 a month. “Very close” in this case means less than ten minutes walking to pretty much any part of campus. But there are other apartment complexes that are right on bus routes and may end up being cheaper, just depends on your priorities. University owned apartment info is here.
In Pullman, you definitely have to eat at Old European for breakfast, Cougar Country for lunch and get a calzone from Sella’s for dinner. Just ten minutes away in Moscow (ID) there are all kinds of artsy coffee houses, bookstores, bars, and pretty much anything else you can’t find in Pullman. Really the only downside to this area is (according to my wife) that we don’t have a Target.

Mmmmm... Sella's
Don’t forget to color your placemat if you go there. Here was my latest “effort,” after the win over UW last year in Pullman:

Dustin you have to go!
Sella’s is the best place to eat a Calzone. The people have spoken. I live in California now and I still crave Sella’s. It is 1115 East Main Street. If I remember right it is just down the hill from the dorms. If you like college towns you will love Pullman. Good Luck and welcome to Cougar Nation. Now you are a Coug you can enjoy that 2003 Holiday Bowl win!!! O ya, I have to agree Cougar Country is great as well. Dissmore’s was a fun place to shop for food (beer) when I was there. If I remember right they have a walk in beer cooler. I wish many times that I was back living in Pullman. Quality Living!

I suppose Pullman is better than Southern California
But I’m pretty sure I like Seattle better than Pullman. Wonderful college town, great four years … wouldn’t want to live the rest of my life there.

Agreed
Loved Pullman for 4 years, love visiting, love WSU…wouldn’t leave Seattle for Pullman anytime soon.

By the way, lest I offend anyone, it's cool if you live there and want to live there
I just grew up near Seattle and I start having major issues if I go too long without all the cool things a city has to offer.

My seven year stint was awesome
I think I could move back to Pullman right now and be happy.
I’d hit the Daily Grind in the morning, play 18 at the new course, shoot some pool at Rico’s, and finish the night off with a Mexican Flag at Rancho. AAaaayhh HAH!!

Yeah, but you live in Boise
That’s just not really a fair comparison. But you’re right about the Daily Grind — absolutely fantastic coffee.

Ouch! Thanks for the SoCal shot Nuss. LOL
I love Seattle as well…born and raised. I lived there for 20+ years, but I meant my wife in SoCal and now I am kinda of stuck for the time being. I know you catch my drift. Although it is hard to complain about 365 days of sun a year. I actually see a lot of WSU trailer hitches and license plate frames down here. Just a little tid-bit I thought you might want to know. Another SoCal plus is I can go see Cougar Basketball at least 3 times a year. UCLA, USC and the Pac10 Tourney at Staples. I can also travel 4hrs to ASU and see them there. Not to bad…huh? Peace out!

SoCal is nice to visit
But, like Pullman, I would never want to live there. I went to Disneyland twice last year, and the first time I got back I went pretty much straight from the airport to Chelan — I could not believe the difference in air quality. I suppose it’s something you get used to down there, but I sure hated it.
You’re right about the sports, though. Can’t beat that, unless you live in Arizona.

Pullman-Moscow "needs" a Target.
I think it would do well.

Dabco managment is a pretty good company
google dabco and pullman, you will find their site. They have a ton of apartments.
by peaty411s on Feb 11, 2009 1:46 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
NO!
do NOT get a dabco managment apartment! They are horrible! The walls are so thin! It is extremely loud when others throw parties and they do almost all week long. If you guys qualify (have to make under 33k a year or so, and one of you has to be part time or not a student at all) I would move to the Palouse Trace apartments. They are really cheap, like $650 a month for a 2 bedroom and the walls are actually thick and you get gas heating unlike dabco’s crappy electric heating. If not Palouse Trace I would recommend looking in to a townhouse or small house by owner. My buddy only pays $700 for his 2 bedroom townhouse and he loves it, it even include hi-speed internet. As for jobs, I would recommend looking at Lewiston or Clarkston over Spokane. Clarkston’s Costco is only 25 mins away and is hiring. I dunno what kind of job you are looking for. Maybe check www.dailyevergreen.com ’s classifieds for a job.

Maybe I've been in the wrong place all this time
Yes the heating is bad, and yes the walls are thin. Luckily I don’t live next to many people who throw parties all the time. But the people at churchill downs are pretty nice, 10X better than campus commons. Don’t go there, ever.

Have I ever told you all how awesome you are?
Seriously, this community rocks. Some guy none of us knows comes in here looking for advice, and you all step up to the plate. This is cool.

From my experience...
Don’t go with Glen Petrey, can’t remember the name of his company, but he owns Graystone now and has been in the Pullman rental market for years (lots of friends with him on their credit reports, that’s how I remember the name). Sue Kirkman owns Cliff Dwellers (my personal stomping grounds) and a few other rentals and I never had a problem with her. Always really understanding and clean properties. Their office was located on Latah st, across from Sun Rentals. Long time reader but don’t post much but rental places in Pullman? I know a bit about it.

Great Location
10 years ago when I went to Wazzu I lived in the Oak Street Apartments (625-631 NE Oak St.). Great Location. You drive to the apartments on NE Grey Lane. I think the owner back then was also Sue Kirkman. She was great to work with. What was great about the location? It is by Reaney Park and just below Greek row. Reaney Park is the home of the National Lentil Festival and the Reaney Park Concert Series on summer evenings. We also love being by the outdoor pool at Reaney Park. When we were there it had a high dive, which was fun to watch our 250 lb. friend belly flop off of. Short walk to campus. If you want to live a quite married life, don’t live to close to the campus or in large apartment complexes like CCN. Get a house.

rancho viejo is the best value for a restaurant in pullman – and the best burrito i have ever had. you can walk out of there paying 6.50 (tip included) for lunch, and not need to eat for the rest of the day because you get so much food.
bucer’s coffee shop in moscow (8 miles away) is a great place to do homework, or just kick back. they have great coffee, cheap beer, live jazz on the weekends (my quartet plays there once a month!), and best of all – a classy cigar lounge.
like other posters said, student housing is the way to go if you want to be close to campus, otherwise military hill is a nice quiet option if you want a house.

Aww, rancho viejo!
The best deal in town. Its like 5.75 for a 2 taco or enchilada meal with chips and salsa. Its cheaper than Taco del mar and waaaay better. The people are great too.

I live exactly two blocks from Rancho
My new favorite restaurant though is Thai Ginger, very good asian food, especially Thai and curries in general.

I prefer Nuevo as far as Pullman goes
But if you want the best mexican food around, drive the 8 miles over to La Casa Lopez, that place is amazing. Go at dinner time for the free bean dip. Damnit, now my mouth is watering.

Yeah he gave the dogs bean dip every time he said Pullman right?
or am I wrong. Damn Psych 105 class, why are you failing me now?

As far as Mexican food goes...
The food at Rancho Viejo’s is overrated. It is quite honestly one of the worst tasting mexican food places I have been to. I have only had a couple meals there, but it has been enough for me. The Mexican food in Moscow is better. There is something about all of the food at Rancho that is not very rich in flavor, it’s kind of bland. All of it: the main entrees, beans, and rice.
by cfred on Feb 13, 2009 4:36 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I completely agree
I’m from Yakima, and the mexican places in Pullman (and Seattle) just don’t compare

Willow Place apartments are nice
Washers and Dryers in the apartment. (I miss that sitting here in my Seattle apartment that also has no dishwasher). They are about a 10 minute walk from the main campus and a 10-15 minute walk to Beasley (for those basketball season tickets you will have), and a 5 minute walk to Dissmores (the aforementioned grocery store). Bassilio’s Cafe in downtown Pullman is great for cheap itialian food and they sell a pitcher of microbrew for 8 bucks! Old European is a must for breakfast (but get up early to avoid lines) .

Thanks
For all those that have offered their advice and suggestions, I truly appreciate the hospitality.
Work: I have always worked in restaurants(server), but I would like to get some medical experience (Bachelor’s Pre-med/Biology). It looks like that both may be limited in the Pullman area.
Housing: We are open to both houses and apts for rent. However, we have had bad experiences with apts that allow pets(tenants fault). So we would probably be looking for a apts that do not allow them.
Thanks again.
