OPEN GAME(S) THREAD: Pac-10 Tournament Edition

I figured many of you out there will be watching the Pac-10 Tournament with interest today, either on TV or from your computer, so here's a thread that will be up for you until the Cougs tip-off tonight for Coug-related discussion of the tournament as it unfolds.

I'll also encourage you, though, to visit our other SBN partners for their game threads, too, where you can talk about the game with fans really knowledgeable about each team. It can be a lot of fun. (Just click on the team name to visit.)

Today's schedule (all games PDT):

  • Noon: No. 4 Arizona State vs. No. 5 Arizona
  • 2:30 p.m.: No. 1 Washington vs. No. 9 Stanford (sadly -- or not, your choice -- no Stanford blog)
  • 6 p.m.: No. 3 Cal vs. No. 6 USC
  • 8:30 p.m.: No. 1 UCLA vs. No. 7 WSU

anyone listening to the AZ/ASU game on Sirius XM?

I hope we get better broadcasters for tonights game. The Arizona broadcaster has made about half a dozen Obama slam references in the last 5 minutes. Please win ASU!

Yes, yes it is.

He is bad enough for football, not sure why they stuck him in here for basketball. I guess they think he adds the color to the broadcast, but he really just makes it painful and keeps asking what the rules are.

I wonder if they are NIT bound now?

Probably would knock Stanford out if they were even still being considered. I wonder if that would hurt our chances?

by selahcoug on Mar 12, 2009 1:52 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I sure hope not

Man, it would be a shame if Arizona got left out of the tournament, but they just faded again. That seven-game win streak seems like a long, long time ago.

by transitive property....

if arizona is knocked down to the NIT, then somebody from the NIT is probably being called up to the show.

I don't know, but I'm impressed by ASU today

To play like that and pull away from a team ostensibly playing for its tournament life … that’s pretty good.

Especially when you consider

That they’ve been run down all year, have no depth to begin with, and were playing without Jamelle McMillan.

By the way

Does anyone else think the Pac-10 is horrendously stupid for putting its top team on at 2:30 in the afternoon? Granted, it’s 5:30 eastern, but that’s pushing it. Then, the No. 2 team is on at 11:30 p.m. eastern. Makes no sense whatsoever.

by thecassino on Mar 12, 2009 2:25 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, and the Arizona/ASU game would've made sense at the 6 pm time slot

With a handful of NBA guys playing, rivalry game, Arizona needing a win, and it’s probably the best matchup.

Cal/USC was the worst choice.

I know they can't set the times based on teams themselves

but it would make a lot more sense to put the top seed and the No. 2 seed at times when the nation can see them on Thursday.

no

the big-12 had their #1 team on at 9:30 this morning; the big 10’s #1 plays at 9am tomorrow, competing with the acc’s #1 at the same time. the only team in the sec worth watching plays at 10am tomorrow.

i think they expect that most people who want to watch out of market games are taking the day off work (like myself) anyway….

by BigWood on Mar 12, 2009 2:32 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

i think the purity of it is great

the brackets and gametimes are set before the teams are even announced. just like the rest of the country. i think you have to be confident enough in the quality of your conference to showcase it as a whole rather than a couple teams.

give the teams who played the night before a maximum amount of rest, and let the chips fall where they may.

by BigWood on Mar 12, 2009 2:39 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Do announcers even think about what they say?

McLean: “What sticks out to me is how physical Washington is as a team. And it starts and ends with this guy (Brockman).”

If the whole team is physical, how does it start and end with one guy?

Seriously, you only have to talk for, what — 60 minutes total throughout the day? Is it too much to ask that it be intelligent?

I'm looking at the CBS Sports front page right now ...

And it says, “This won’t help Kansas’ case for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament.” Since when was Kansas ever in the running for a No. 1 seed?

And while I’m on a rant, why are people always so given to hyperbole? How can anyone suggest that this might be Romar’s best coaching job? How about that 2003-04 team in his second year that started 5-8 and 0-5 in the Pac-10, came back from a 16-point second half deficit at OSU to win their first game and went on to get a No. 8 seed in the NCAA Tournament? Or how about the team the next year that earned a No. 1 seed? People are silly.

FYI from 3A tourney.....

I think Tony found us a special player in 6-5 Anthony Brown. I only watched the first day and I thought he was the best player in the field. Siva was good too, but he’s surrounded by other great players so it was harder to judge. I can see Brown in the rotation somewhere next season, maybe even as a starter. I’m interested in seeing Thames, who I hear is a legit starter also.

Brown has a great all-around game, a great body for Pac-10 play, and an NBA future for sure. He has room to grow also, plus he’s a lefty with a sweet stroke. I liked what I saw, a glimpse of our future.

by SW WA Coug on Mar 12, 2009 4:40 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Interesting thoughts on Brown

I have seen post very high on him and somewhat low as well. I definitely think he plays next year because as you say he already has the body to go. I saw him last year and really did not like his stroke. People have said his shot has improved this year. He sounds like a player that can do a little bit of everything but maybe nothing great?

For next year I hope he can knock down an open jumper, quick enough to stay in front of most wings, and can handle a bit even if he isn’t able to get to the basket similar to Capers thisyear. If he ends up a solid complinmentary player his first couple of years I’m honestly happy. We need a wing off the bench to compliment Capers, Thompson, and hopefully surpass Lodwick.

The focus has definitely been on Motum and Thames but if Brown and Chadwick can provide something off the bench next year it would really help a lot.

by BornCoug on Mar 12, 2009 5:00 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I got a closeup look at him and....

I didn’t see anything that overly concerns me. I think he’s in the rotation from the get-go next season. His upside is huge. He handles the ball very well. He’s long, like Capers and he looked to me like he has the potential to be a very good defender. It’s so hard to tell in just one game. I saw a kid playing with kids far less talented than him, but he was always trying to be a good teammate. it impressed me. A couple of times he tried to do a little too much probably. In my humble opinion, but it is a tad biased, I thought Anthony Brown was the best player I saw during the 3A and 4A tournaments.

I watched Gonzaga play Garfield in 4A and lose in OT. Shadle somehow beat Prep during the regular season but from what I saw, doesn’t have nearly the talent surrounding Anthony that GP does. If you put Anthony on that club, and still let David Stockton run the point, they would have easily beat Garfield and probably given Federal Way all they could handle for the title. It would have been a great matchup.

Kansas was an iffy #1 / probable #2, and if they don’t get the last #1 then Memphis probably will. I’d say it will take some combination of Louisville, Michigan State and Wake Forest losing to bump UW up there.

Has anyone told Cal that the game started?

Not sure they know. Maybe they think they are in the 8:30 game.

I made a comment like this on Cal's game thread when the played ASU last week

Nearly got booed off the thread. Apparently they were down 22 to Stanford in the 1st half before they came back to win.

If we can't win this Tourney, we want USC to

With UA’s loss today, they are probably out of the NCAA’s, meaning that they’re an NIT team. USC is the other NIT team from the PAC-10 team. If USC wins this tourney, they don’t go to the NIT, leaving a spot for WSU.

Whoa

I look back and all the sudden it is 4 points

It's become a frantic game

If we were to move on…what scares me about Cal is there ability to come back. I’m not sure we build big leads as well as other teams, and while we also have improved our ability to avoid giving up big runs, Cal is so good at quickly making a few threes and getting a few turnovers that we are likely to struggle.

even if cal gets away with it here

they can’t do this in the NCAA’s or it’s an early exit for sure

I personally think we match up better with USC....

They seem to play us with less poise than Cal does and if the officials let Wazzu play as physical a game as USC does, we should be fine.

Cal’s perimeter game scares me a bit. Christopher and Randle kill us with threes.

Cal's perimeter game scares me more then a little bit.

When Randle gets hot, his range is endless. That’s not good for our Pack defense.

Yeah, Cal has too many shooters.

I would prefer USC. Plus as someone said, if USC wins, their fans stick around and root for the Cougs making it more of an even crowd tonight.

Funny people on ESPN's

gamethread are convinced the fix is in…. UCLA is laying down to see WSU advance to hopefully get into the tourney. How nice of them!

Where are they saying this?

I want to know so I can go yell at them.

Great stuff from people who don't know anything...

“watch for refs to be in on the gift calls in WSU favor”
“the smart money is sitting this one out due to the obvious. UCLA has agreed to lay down for the cougs tonight.”
“UCLA will help out a brother in the same conference. They have before and they will tonight.”
“I just wouldn’t want to be a fan who paid up to watch a game like this because it is a prefixed game from the start, unfortunately. "
"they are laying down for the cougars”

It has to be better than the tom hansen retrospective from earlier

I don’t mean to bash the guy too much, but I’m sure he would have been a great commissioner in 1984.

Oh, wait! He WAS the commissioner in 1984 … and he hasn’t changed a bit.

Yeah, I watched most of that as well.

Not sure why, I just couldn’t look away. I guess so I could just contradict everything they said. I am so excited that he is leaving. Hopefully they will get a good replacement.
