I hate the SEC this year
I'm watching Tennessee and Mississippi State play some of the worst basketball you can imagine in a conference tournament championship, and I'm so irritated by Lundquist and Raftery talking about the SEC like it's awesome.
Consider:
- The team considered to be the best in that awful conference played just one "tough" nonconference game, and nearly lost it at home to the Cougs when WSU was playing its worst basketball of the season.
- One of the teams in the tournament championship game, generally considered to be the second best, lost twice to Gonzaga.
- The other team in the tournament championship was dismantled by WSU on a neutral court.
And that team that was so thoroughly outplayed by WSU is leading the game and minutes from an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. I'm so annoyed right now.

Looks like they will end up with 3 bids.
If MSU holds on.

I just threw up a little in my mouth
MSU is going to the Tournament. What a joke.

That is one 12 seed that will not be upsetting a five

I am
But that team stinks. And if anyone on the committee has a brain, they’ll be a 13 or 14 seed.

Varvado is nice
But Baynes showed what can happen if you just get physical with him.

Off topic...
What do you guys think of the St Mary’s talk? Do you think they should get a pass into the tourney because Mills was injured?
Can we assume that St Mary’s would have beaten Gonzaga atleast once (the only chance they had for a big win in conference)? In that ESPN game where he got injured, they were in the game, but only because Mills had hit 6 threes. I bet Gonzaga would have won that game going away even if Mills was in there.
I think the argument for St Mary’s is right along with any argument for a team that plays their best ball at the end of the year (like the Cougs). But the Cougs don’t deserve to go to the tourney and St. Mary’s shouldn’t get in because of what we “think” they can do.

If St. Mary's gets in....
So should Davidson. The ‘Curry Factor’ and the ‘Mills Factor.’ Just saying….
That's the way they are portraying it on tv.
The talk about St. Mary’s is dominated by Mills. How can Davidson be worthy? Or St. Mary’s? Thumbs down to both, IMO. I agree with Nuss on this one.
The tourney's great when stars emerge
Like Curry last year. But you can’t put undeserving teams in the field to try to ‘manufacture’ those scenarios. I think we’re all in concurrence here.
Well glad we all agree
I hope the selection committee thinks the same, and I bet they do.

It's hard to get it perfectly right....
I think it’s part of what makes it so exciting. EVERYONE is going to be looking for that one or two teams that got screwed! How exciting is that? We can start a whole new post just for that. Everyone will have their personal opinion.
That's what the thread is for!
It’s up on the front page!

Ugh.
This is aggravating. I haven’t seen much of the SEC this year but they must be terrible if their two best teams are a team that was dissected by a frosh-heavy WSU early in the year on the east coast, and a team that lost twice, both times in the Southeast, to a less-than-stellar Gonzaga team.
Might be the worst major conference ever
Seriously, three teams:
No. 8 seed LSU
No. 9 seed Tennessee
No. 13 seed Mississippi State
Lots of complaining this morning about UW drawing MSU in the first round, saying the other 13 seeds are weaker. They’ve got a point — MSU finished 60th in Pomeroy, while Portland State is 117 and Akron is 91. But the Huskies played both Portland State and Cleveland State already, meaning the Huskies couldn’t have played them again.
Besides, three points remain:
1) If the Huskies had won the Pac-10 tournament, they probably would have been a 3 seed, making this moot. So they’ve got no one to blame but themselves for this matchup.
2) MSU really is that bad.
3) If the Huskies can’t beat MSU on what will essentially will be a home floor, they don’t deserve to be there anyway.
They are also dealing with the fallout from Venoy Overton's actions
Romar has been spending too much energy defending this kid’s actions. I didn’t like his comments that people are just ignorant if they think the signs VO flashed were gang related. Dumb comment, IMO.
He also said any team that wins the SEC tourney should be higher than a 13 seed. To me, that’s complaining about the draw. He should just be happy they made the dance after two seasons of no post season play.
Many of their fans are upset they played so poorly against ASU and lost that #3 seed. The focus is on one particular player instead of the team. I fully expect the press isn’t done with what happened on the court with VO, Harden and Glasser. I expect to see it on the broadcast also.
They need to rid themselves of that ball and chain, get their focus straight, and concentrate on basketball. I don’t see any possible way MSU hangs with them if they can do that.
I don't see any way MSU hangs with them anyway
Although, I will say this: The Bulldogs launch 3s with impunity, and if they hit a ton of them, anything can happen. The problem with that, of course, is that if they miss a ton of them, Washington is a great rebounding team that will turn those boards into endless fastbreak points.
As long as Washington takes harassing MSU’s shooters seriously, they’ll run them off the floor. Of course, you can’t take that for granted …
You live by the three, you die by the three....
The team that plays with the most discipline has the best chance at victory. That’s the major downfall of Romar coached teams, they don’t have a disciplined approach to the game. They out-athleticism you, but their kids are all outstanding athletes.
If MSU is missing from the arc, Washington will own the glass, get out in transition, and also own the offensive glass. It shouldn’t even be close. It will be like a home game for them, and they want to get that taste of the ASU loss out of their system.
MSU is going to be feeling pretty good but it’s a false sense of security. Washington would kill Auburn, Tennessee or LSU. This is a bad year for the SEC and none of their tourney teams get past the second round.
I wouldn't be shocked if they ALL lost in the first round
Although, LSU seems to match up pretty well with Butler — their perimeter defense should give the Bulldogs fits. And Tennessee vs. OSU could be a first to 100 kind of game, so that’s a tossup to me. But I certainly don’t see either of those getting past their respective No. 1 seeds …
