I’m Psyched.
After the apple cup this year, I listened to Softy on KJR just to hear him eat sock after the Cougs beat his Dawgs. What he said surprised me. He said: I am so Psyched, because there is a new era in UW football, and this 0-12 crap is done! He went on about how the natural universe will be restored and UW will again be on top. I laughed, as a cougar fan about how he could not face the reality of another cougar apple cup win and the fact that UW football is as low as low gets.
Yesterday, the cougs were ousted from play, and the last of the players that heavily impacted our three strait postseason run played their last game. It was disappointing to say the least as they underperformed against a WCC squad. But a few hours after the game, reality set in. And boy is reality exciting.
We have a future. We have a great coach that truly wants to be here. We have two players on the all-freshman team. One is a sweet, sweet shooter when he’s on and the other is an athletic big man who has a future on all-conference teams. Another freshman we rely on as our top guard defender. Late in the season, he actually showed some offensive promise. We have more depth that will be underclassman next year. Late in the year, Harthun showed his freshman jitters had passed, and he was a capable ball handler and shooter. Lodwick will get some playing time next year and he will have plenty of playing time to find his shot. And as anyone who has watched him in pre-game warm-ups knows, he has a great shot. Charlie Enquist has came in a few times and showed he has the ability to play center next year. We have some unproven guys, who could emerge as contributors eventually. Wetherill, Boeke, and Watson could fill that mold.
We’ve got a great class coming in as well. Xavier Thames could be an impact point guard with range. Then there’s Anthony Brown. He is a shooter, but he can also get to the hoop and draw contact. The 6-5 Shaddle Park grad could be a starter as early as next year. We have David Chadwick who seems like he follows the mold of Cowgill and Forrest. There’s also the aussie Motum, who sounds like another capable PF.
We will have growing pains next year, but boy is the future exciting. I can’t even imagine Thompson, Casto, and Capers as seniors. They seem so much more polished then the young guys we have had lately. Koprivicia will still be there next year too, and he could be valuable. Tony will be there too. Maybe he won’t play who we want, maybe he doesn’t get everything right. But he was a National coach of the year, and he has the potential to do it again some day. Thank goodness he wants to do it as a cougar. I will miss this senior class. I will miss Harmeling’s good nights, I will miss Baynes’ consistency, I will miss Forrest’s mid-range shot, and boy, will I miss Rochestie’s scoring and leadership. But without them, we’ll be alright. I can’t wait for the future of cougar basketball. Now I know how Softy felt after the apple cup. It’s not about ignoring the past and present. It’s about the raw excitement of the future possibilities that propels sports. Forget what just happened. It may be bitter now, but man is the future sweet.
I’m Psyched.

Totally agree
Lots of reasons to be excited.

Three things.
1) Heard a rumor (from a fairly reliable source) that Enquist may be looking elsewhere for playing time and a scholarship next year. Only scuttlebutt, but don’t be surprised if he’s not at WSU this summer.
2) Someone pointed out that Boeke wasn’t even suited up last night. He hasn’t added anything to the team in games so far, but it seems with all the youth coming in, he should be able to compete. But do the street clothes indicate something bigger?
3) I’ve read everything I could get my hands on re: Chadwick and Motum. While Motum’s more talked up (of the two), Chadwick is no slouch, particularly on offense. He’s getting regional and state honors out in NC. The only reason he’s not getting more attention is because he broke his foot his junior year.
I just hope we get the scholarship thing sorted out so we don’t go through boom and bust years with 7 incoming freshmen 2-3 times per decade.

Chadwick broke his wrist, actually.
And I just notice Cougfan put up a premium story on him. Funny.

The scholarship thing was just unfortunate
Sometimes, you lose some guys. It just so happened that we lost some guys. HOWEVER, I think, in general, the guys we replaced them with are more talented and will be better for us in the long run.
Jo-Jo said it earlier this year, and it probably will happen at some point — there just won’t be enough minutes for all of these guys to be happy, and you’ll lose a couple of guys from this seven-man class. They’ll be replaced with new guys, and you’re back to the balance you want. These things generally work themselves out.

I think we got some really good trade-offs
Capers > Abercrombie
Casto > Sauls
Of course for Akognon and Hopson, we probably didn’t do as well.
This is where per game statistics go to die.

I don't know about Sauls' O
But we could have used another ballhandler this year. Besides, Rochestie is using his ride, which was after TR gave his to Capers. Still, Casto > Abercrombie.

Northwest Basketball
I’m looking forward to watching all 4 Northwest Pac 10 teams the next few years. Casto and Thompson are going to be studs. Robinson has OSU on the upswing, and they apparently are bringing in a pretty good class next year. Who knows what will happen with Kent, but the Ducks also have some good young talent. While UW loses Brockman and Dentmon, which will hurt a lot, we’ll still have a solid young core, plus we add a really good Freshman class.
Should be fun.

Sometimes I can't figure out what Tony's up to
I remember back when Ivory Clark was benched for a critical NCAA tournament game. Could never understand the logic behind that move, especially after such a strong showing in earlier games. I thought we could have avoided defeat.
There doesn’t seem to be much info available from Tony on player status or PT. Stuff happens and only afterwards are there comments about it. I suppose that is highly appropriate. I’d like to know more about the kids already in the program at times. Tony keeps it close to vest at all times. I’m not trying to be overly critical.
I feel bad for some of the kids that don’t get to realize their dreams. When you have that many freshmen on the roster, somthing has to give.

Ivory and Tony did not get along.
Ivory really does not like Tony Bennett.

I've suspected examples of that very same thing the last couple of seasons as well
I also suspect it’s the main reason players leave the program, next to PT. Don’t have anything to back it up with though. It’s probably no different at most schools.
I never doubted for a minute that scholarships wouldn’t become available with nine freshmen on the roster. Something has to give.

If Lodwick doesn't get serious PT next year
I’d look for him to move on. Unless he improves dramatically on D, I don’t see who he steals minutes from, and the year after next, we’re expecting Patrick Simon to come in, so it doesn’t get better at that point.
Rumor mill has it Boeke is still struggling with the back injury we thought had cleared up. Bad, bad, bad. I’ve got one of those, and I’m no athlete. Can’t imagine how much pain you’d go through after hours of banging at practice/during games.

Enquist will get PT next year, Boeke will not
If Charlie sticks around, I see him getting 15-20 minutes per game. It will take a while for Motum to get in the groove, but Motum will also play 15-20 minutes per game if he is all that people say about him. I also saw Chadwick play when I was in Charlotte. He has talent, but needs to bulk up a bit to mix it up in the Pac-10. Lodwick is too one-dimensional as a player to get significant minutes for Bennett, so he needs to mix it up by playing coutside in, by mixing in the pick-and-roll, and the pick-and-pop
I'm all ears, so tell me what you know.
