Around SBN: Two Minutes Of Thunder Basketball Wins The Game

Tourney Day 1 Open Thread

Opening this up, as a way to discuss this evening's slate of games.

As I type, Gonzaga is getting outplayed by an inferior opponent, Akron, in the first half.

Shocking!

Is there a more frustrating team to watch than Gonzaga?

So much talent.

Going to waste with a 2-3 zone that I’m pretty sure I can score against.

Don't forget

Nuss has them in the Final Four. So if he tries to brag about picking American, remember that.

If the zags were in any other bracket

I’d have them there too. But with UNC looming, I don’t see it happening.

by Grady Clapp on Mar 19, 2009 5:24 PM PDT up reply actions

I bet they come out with more defensive intensity in the 2nd half

they just don’t have put this much effort in to win regularly in WCC play

This is where per game statistics go to die.

I'm last place in the CC bracket challenge

Damn you and your late season underachieving, Cal

Yeah dang them

I should have listened to Obama

The Maryland upset was one of the few upsets he picked.

Worst defense ever on the inbound

that guy had forever to look at it

Heytvelt is the king of lazy

what a waste of talent and athletic ability

Here comes the run for Villanova

Will American be able to hit enough threes to keep this going?

He's actually not very good

and compounds it by thinking that he’s better than he is…

Looks like Villanova will pull it off

I wish we could play a first round game on one of our home courts

by Grady Clapp on Mar 19, 2009 6:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Where's Jeremy Pargo anyway?

You would think Gonzaga could shred Akron on guard play alone

by Grady Clapp on Mar 19, 2009 6:23 PM PDT reply actions

Michigan just put on a clinic

On how to defend a team trying to make a three to tie

by Grady Clapp on Mar 19, 2009 6:27 PM PDT reply actions

At one point, all 4 teams I had in this set of games were losing

But, if the zags continue to seperate themselves, all 4 will have won.

by peaty411s on Mar 19, 2009 6:33 PM PDT reply actions

This is pretty incredible

Few benches Pargo, goes small with the lineup, and kablamo. Zags up 12.

by Grady Clapp on Mar 19, 2009 6:35 PM PDT reply actions

Oh Micah Downs

So good, yet so full of yourself

by Grady Clapp on Mar 19, 2009 6:38 PM PDT reply actions

Demoralizing Pargo dunk

Now I remember why I like the Zags

by Grady Clapp on Mar 19, 2009 6:44 PM PDT reply actions

Oooops!

I mean High-tvelt sighting!

by SW WA Coug on Mar 19, 2009 6:46 PM PDT up reply actions

Just playing around

He’s even got the Caleb stache, sort of.

by SW WA Coug on Mar 19, 2009 6:49 PM PDT up reply actions

I miss that stache

We lost 3 of 4 when he shaved it off

Coincidence?

by Grady Clapp on Mar 19, 2009 6:50 PM PDT up reply actions

I thought it was the SB green jersey

That gave us the edge, but it sure didn’t against Ucla last time we played them. Have no idea if it was at SMC or not.

by SW WA Coug on Mar 19, 2009 6:53 PM PDT up reply actions

I just don't get why the Zags don't play like this consistently

One half, they are any old mid-major. The next, they are UNC.

by Grady Clapp on Mar 19, 2009 6:46 PM PDT reply actions

And Heytvelt makes a fool of himself

And now I remember what I hate about GU.

Stop the cockiness and play some solid basketball.

Maybe that’s my answer to the consistency thing.

by Grady Clapp on Mar 19, 2009 6:47 PM PDT reply actions

31-6 run by GU

Amazing what happens you play well on defense

by Grady Clapp on Mar 19, 2009 6:53 PM PDT reply actions

It's such a leap from hs to college, especially Pac-10 level ball

Many just can’t make the transition, just the way it goes. I think Harthun will be pretty solid player.

by SW WA Coug on Mar 19, 2009 7:19 PM PDT up reply actions

We'll find out soon enough

I’ve heard really good things about him. I’m hoping it’s not just hype because if it’s true, he will eventually help us.

by SW WA Coug on Mar 19, 2009 7:17 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah. Sometimes I wonder if I am more surprised. . .

that Thompson, Casto, and Capers made such an impact this year, or that Harthun & Lodwick did not make much of an impact.

by JimtheCoug on Mar 19, 2009 7:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Speaking of potential. . .

I am actually kinda excited to see what Enquist can do now that he will be out of Baynes’ shadow.

by JimtheCoug on Mar 19, 2009 7:30 PM PDT up reply actions

Nine freshmen = logjam

Can’t get em all PT. I hate to see em go too. Maybe a couple of JC’s with all those freshman would have been a good move instead of such a large freshman class.

by SW WA Coug on Mar 19, 2009 7:36 PM PDT up reply actions

I can't wait to see next year's freshman group

I have a feeling all four will get a decent shot to play

by SW WA Coug on Mar 19, 2009 7:31 PM PDT up reply actions

If Tony writes a book at the end of his career I will buy it in hopes....

He explains some of his moves while he was our coach. It would make for interesting reading.

OT- Sounders FC on ESPN2

Looks to be a pretty good crowd, and Seattle’s leading NY 2-0

by TiltingRight on Mar 19, 2009 6:59 PM PDT reply actions

IDK

Drew Carrey didn’t have money yet….?

by TiltingRight on Mar 19, 2009 7:10 PM PDT up reply actions

I hear Portland has great attendance

for their local soccer team, and I’m guessing they want the instant rivalry. I honestly don’t know the economics of the MLS, so can’t speak to it.

by TiltingRight on Mar 19, 2009 7:12 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm listening to Kevin Calabro on the radio

He sounds like he knows what he’s doing… At least to me because I don’t know what I’m doing.

by GoCougs on Mar 19, 2009 7:24 PM PDT up reply actions

35k +

They turned away even more because they didn’t want to open the upper deck and have lots of empty seats. Nice work.

by TiltingRight on Mar 19, 2009 7:41 PM PDT up reply actions

35 thousand for a soccer match in Seattle?

No kidding! I’m astonished! Hope the new doesn’t wear off too soon. I know nothing about soccer except the offside rule. And, of course, all the flopping they learned from basketball players, or what it the other way around?

by SW WA Coug on Mar 19, 2009 7:44 PM PDT up reply actions

I've never been a huge soccer fan

but was in Germany in HS, so I can tolerate watching it, especially if I’m there live. Qwest is rockin! It sounds just like they would in Europe. Awesome to see.

by TiltingRight on Mar 19, 2009 7:53 PM PDT up reply actions

I loved that head butt in the World Cup

a couple years back. Wouldn’t you just love to see that on a basketball court sometime? Unbelievable! That was so sick!

Zidane's?

Or the one that broke Brian McBride’s head open?

Zidane's....

I remember that name. Talk about being a poor sport.

by SW WA Coug on Mar 19, 2009 8:33 PM PDT up reply actions

Ok, what is going on

Why am I watching Illinois/WKU and not UCLA/VCU?

by Grady Clapp on Mar 19, 2009 7:27 PM PDT reply actions

because for some reason you are not watching march madness on demand in high definition.

Tony Bennett for Heisman!

by johnnycougar on Mar 19, 2009 8:32 PM PDT up reply actions

The way I saw this year's bracket....

Last year was the only year 4 #1 seeds made it to the Final Four. Most years it’s pretty much #4 seeds or higher. This year I made sure the Big East was well represented because I think they are head and shoulders above all the others, even the ACC except for UNC. If you can get most of your Elite 8 picks in there, you have a shot to get to the Final Four and beyond.

by SW WA Coug on Mar 19, 2009 7:54 PM PDT up reply actions

2-1?

Fans must be going nuts with all that scoring.

by SW WA Coug on Mar 19, 2009 8:12 PM PDT up reply actions

3-0 Sounders

steal near midfield, took it all the way down through the D, dragged his foot, the goalkeeper went down (thinking he was kicking), then he kicked it in the corner.

A thing of beauty (as far as soccer goes).

by TiltingRight on Mar 19, 2009 8:14 PM PDT up reply actions

I can't believe I'm favoring soccer over the tourney

But this is pretty cool.

And where the heck was this Casey Keller in the world cup?

by Grady Clapp on Mar 19, 2009 8:19 PM PDT up reply actions

And ballgame

The Sounders era has started in Seattle

by Grady Clapp on Mar 19, 2009 8:22 PM PDT up reply actions

good game last saturday eh?

I'll have to drag my wife and a couple friends down for a game.

My martial arts instructor was an alternate to the U-20 Olympic team as goalkeeper and was talking about how excited he was Kasey was playing for Seattle.

also

illinois is really not that good, just as I suspected

(though not enough to have them lose in the 1st round in my bracket)

Tony Bennett for Heisman!

by johnnycougar on Mar 19, 2009 9:14 PM PDT up reply actions

i did

but honestly, the zags would have an easier time with illinois then w. kentucky after watching this game.

yep

made up for getting swatted, that’s as good as you can play without fouling
