March Madness Open Thread: Day 2
A chance for you to discuss the morning action, while I'm hard at work, because fourth year pharmacy students don't get Spring Break. Booooooo.
By the way, if you get a chance to check out Barack Obama' s bracket, it's actually pretty well thought out, even though it's a little on the safe side (and he openly hates on the Pac-10).
But hey - he has UW losing in the second round.
That's change I can believe in.

CHEESY
ND State is playing well against Kansas but is getting pounded inside repeatedly. I don’t think they’ll stay with them. The other “upset” bid has more staying power, Utah State is a lot more versatile and could beat Marquette. Both are good games to watch. I am entirely uninterested by OK State vs Tennessee or the blowout that is the Syracuse game.

I apparently picked them as well.
I forgot I picked WKU. I’m never good at remembering. I don’t know if Utah State will be able to hang around.

I remember back when you were doing your Top-25 poll....
and I showed some love for Utah St. and you weren’t all that hot on them. I never forgot that and didn’t pick them for an upset over Marquette based on that comment. And then you turn around and pick them in your bracket. It looks like Utah St. is going to make it to the second round.

Yeah, they've got to play some defense
They’re fouling on just about every possession right now, and just lost their best shooter. Gonna be tough — Marquette’s athleticism is taking over.

Well, Marquette just isn't the same team without Dominic James
My pick of USU had more to do with that than anything else. I didn’t think the Aggies were a top 25 team then, and I don’t think Marquette is a top 25 team now. Plus, having Utah State play in Boise? It’s about a four-hour drive, and I figured there would be a lot of Aggies in the house.

Sorry for giving you a ration...
I totally understand where you are coming from. Villanova is playing at home and so is Ohio St. today. I have Nova over Ucla but messed up and didn’t pick OSU (just think they aren’t that good). I follow your logic and it makes tons of sense.
That's why I picked them too
and there is A LOT of Aggies in the house.

I finished my bracket really late on Wednesday, and I didn’t look at it again until yesterday afternoon. He’s not ready if he has games like he did today in college ball, on this stage, where he’s expected to put up good numbers. Just saying….

Every time I watch the guy his game reminds me of somebody in the NBA, but I can’t figure out who it is! Any thoughts on his NBA equivalent? The only guy I fall back on is Michael Redd, but that’s basically just because they are shooting guards and have a similar body-type….
A little help!
by LeaveItToWeaver on Mar 20, 2009 3:46 PM PDT reply actions
I'm not much help because I don't watch the NBA much....
Everytime I try to watch the Blazers, I end up switching to the Food Channel or something I’ve tivoed. I just refuse to invest the time in the NBA’s product, even when it features one of their supertars.
I watched OKC one night for a bit on the NBA channel just so I could watch Kyle Weaver for a bit, but even with him in getting tons of minutes, it was hard to watch.
I wish the NBA game was more like the European game, or at least the way I envision it, lots of passing and good shooting, screening and moving, cuts through the lane, that sort of thing. I have fun watching the USA compete in the Olympics under Coach K because they have to adapt to that style, and they are such good athletes that they can do it.
I feel you. Its been rough for me to watch as much as I once did. There is nothing to be excited about, other than Weaver getting experience. Just wish he were on a different team :-(

Yeah...
He started at SPU (I’m an alumnus from there as well as WSU). I think he’s an up and coming coach, many people including myself believe that some of UW’s struggles the last few years were due to Bone leaving and Romar losing his X’s and O’s that Coach Bone provided.

How Ken Bone hasn't yet gotten a big time division 1 job is beyond me
That guy is a great coach who gets the most out of his teams. I was kinda pissed the KIRO game is PSU/Xavier, but this PSU squad is fun to watch.
He will soon
He’s only been at PSU a little while. I think it’s a matter of time, and what does he want. If Ernie Kent were to leave UO (unlikely) I could see Bone being considered.
It's not like this is some huge surprise
The guy was dominant at SPU. He only took the UW assistant gig because he knew that was the only way he was going to get a D-I head coaching job. But he needs to go somewhere where he can successfully recruit the kinds of players he who can play the way he wants. Arizona would be a really, really good fit.
Bone's a great coach
But relatively unknown outside of certain circles. I think they want a name like what Mark Few became when he first put Gonzaga on the map.
Since I don't like Arizona
I’d love them to get a name that is just a name, over a coach like Bone. It would be great for the Cougs as well if UA dropped a few rungs down the ladder .

My significant other / soon to be wife, plays that silly game about twice a week and also coaches it. Can you believe that?
I might have tickets to offer over the site
My best friend and I have season tickets, didn’t really cost us anything, and we’ll probably have a few games to get rid of. If we can’t find any friends for a game, I’ll put them up through a fan post. No promises, but keep it in mind.
I bet I would have no problem getting the GF to go to the Galaxy games

I happened to catch the Tonight Show taping with Beckham as the guest
…and my fiancee was hollering with all the other women when he came out.
I gotta say, the new MMOD is really excellent
Awesome quality. That’s how you foil the people at Justin.tv — by making your free product (in which you force people to watch the ads) better than theirs. Brilliant.
Yeah it is great
if I didn’t have HD on my TV, it would actually be a better option!

It screws up everyones bracket equally.
And you always have to root for a #16. Never happened, would love to see the first one. Don’t see it happening tonight, but who knows.
I agree
Looks like Louisville will go on a run

Hill has done a great job attacking Utah's big man
He has been a non-factor because of foul trouble

Have you looked at the standings, specifically at the bottom of them.

I like doing this because it keeps me humble
And proves to everyone around here that I’m really not that smart.
I have UA in the sweet 16
because I had to pick a double digit seed to go deep, and figured they were the best candidate

If I wouldn't have been a Coug....
I was going to be a Trojan. My cousin is a Trojan that played in their band. He had a blast.
If it were today
that would be a $200,000 decision

Gotta take MSU in that though
USC might be peaking, but they have too many demons to overcome. I can’t see them hanging with a team that can be physical and make them question each other.
I have to respectfully disagree....
It doesn’t matter to USC right now. They will match MSU with manpower and athleticism. I don’t think MSU has faced a club like them yet this season, or in their league. USC is very impressive but I’m totally biased as well.
Now
Pennell actually has had Hill on the bench for a few mins

Jordan Hill is a freaking beast
I gotta admit — I was not his biggest fan before this year. But holy smokes, he has absolutely MADE that team this year. They are nowhere without him.
That will be next year
I’m wondering why I didn’t vote him for most improved, I didn’t even consider him.

It’s as good as I’ve ever done, to be honest. I’m just having fun, trying to hang with all you experts.

No OT games yet
Unless I missed one while at work. Possible.
Wow
Budinger had a great game – 20pts on 8-14 shooting, 8 boards, 5 assists to 2 turnovers, 4 steals and a block.
Maybe Pennell took him aside before the game and said “this tournament is where you become an NBA draft pick”
Tony Bennett for Heisman!
My whole tournament will be a success if Siena
can beat the Buckeyes in their backyard. No way does a 5 deserve that much love. Go Siena!!!
Anyone know a great sports bar in downtown portland
Near the light rail line? Need a place to prefunk tomorrow.
If you have Comcast
Sienna, OSU is on 117. Not in HD though.
