Bennett gets 1.7 million for 5 years, plus $500K bonus
"The parties have agreed to a memorandum of understanding that will pay Bennett total annual compensation of $1.7 million for five years. He also will receive a $500,000 signing bonus and the memorandum includes an additional incentive bonus of $500,000 that he would receive after five years. "

Actually from what I have seen
It looks like UVa is paying the buyout, Bennett gets to keep the huge Bonus. He almost doubled his salary.
Talk to the $$$...
And there it is…$1.7 million, plus the signing bonus puts him as a very wealthy man. Sorry Coug Nation, honor, integrity, and hard work won’t pay the bills.
I have been reading all of the posts, and they reflect well my emotional state through the last 24 hours. Let’s be honest, if Bo Ryan had retired, none of us would have been shocked had TB left for Wisconsin. But there is a right way and a wrong way to do business, and he chose the wrong way. Someone else made a great comment (i apologize for not remembering who, but you know who you are) about the difference between players transfering and coaches transfering. I think when a coach pulls something like what TB did, he should have to sit out a year, just like players do.
Now, I’m over it. Let’s go get “Boned!” (couldn’t help myself! :)
The thing is....
Even if we did offer him 1.7 million, what the hell are you going to do with 1.7 million dollars a year in Pullman… Other than travel out of Pullman?
True enough, but...
At the end of the day, it may or may not be about the money. I think WSU showed the last two years that if Tony really needed something, he would get it. It feels more like he took the first chance he could to get out of Pullman. Why? – only Tony will ever know.
What’s really sad is that I was so looking forward to the 10/11 season, when Klay, Casto, and Capers were the veteran leaders, this years freshman were acclimated, and we were ready to make a deep run. Now, especially with Thames wanting to bail, I’m afraid of the slippery slope TB left us with.

the memorandum includes an additional incentive bonus of $500,000 that he would receive after five years.
Odds of him ever seeing that bonus? Either he fails and is gone before that, or he succeeds and bolts.

Yeah, it works against him if he is not doing well because
If after year 4 he is on the hot seat, it makes no sense to keep him around for essentially 2.2 million for that last season.
Now that I'm more rational...
I don’t think it was about the money. He’d offered to give back money from his current contractual pay.
He’s always given whichever school came calling a fair hearing, and weighing the pros and cons, decided to stay in Pullman. I think this time, with the new facilities, the region, the area, less travel, higher level of competition and being closer to his wife’s family… I can’t blame him for giving it serious consideration. It sucks. It really does, but I can’t blame him.
Also, since the “recruiting trip to UVA” apparently didn’t happen, I think I’m kinda over it. Ready to move on.
I agree that I can't blame him for leaving
But I can blame him for saying all the things he said about Pullman and the job and the things he wanted, and then leaving.
If you haven’t read Jim Moore’s piece at Cougfan yet, go read it. Sums it up perfectly.
If I'd read Moore
Monday, I would have sainted him for expressing my thoughts. After stewing on the facts, I’ve changed my mind.
We’ve watched this guy for 6 years now, between being CDB’s assistant and being head coach. During that time, he, his staff and his students have talked about character and the Pillars. It’s easy to initially believe that all that was baloney when a shock like this happens, but once we get a clear head, logic has to prevail. Is it really believable that we (and everyone associated with him) was lying that whole time, a complete fraud, fooling everyone and this is the TRUE Tony? Or is it more likely that what we saw was the true Tony, and THIS is the anomoly?
Still very disappointed that he left. Especially now, and especially the way it happened. Even still have flashes of anger. But I get it. And I can appreciate what he and his father have done for the program. We’re WAY better off than when they stepped foot on campus.
TR...I think you've got it right...
Those are the real reasons. Add to that the fact that UVA is a pretty prestigous university and that tops it off. In 2004, Charlottesville was ranked the best place to live in the United States in the book Cities Ranked and Rated by Bert Sperling and Peter Sander. Sperling and Sander ranked the cities based on cost of living, climate, and quality of life.

It’s not very big, but that area is very nice and the university is reported to be very attractive.
As for being closer to his wife’s family. I’m not sure how much of a factor that ended up being. It’s about 2500 miles from Pullman to Baton Rouge….and about 1000 miles from Charlottesville to Baton Rouge. Both are long distances.
FYI, trip time for flying from Pullman to Baton Rouge would be around 11 hours including layovers/airport time (3 hops). Trip time for flying from Charlottesville to Baton Rouge can be as quick as 4-5 hours (2 hops)…so that is in fact pretty significant.

Actually, I think her family is in North Carolina.
I read that anyhow. Born and raised in Baton Rouge, yes, but family’s in NC.
Speaking from personal experience, I can tell you that getting into and out of Charlottesville is a nightmare
The city’s nice enough, I guess, but no way is it the best place to live in the US. That’s crazy talk.
