Baynes gets the All-Conference Snub
Congrats to TR, Klay, and Deangelo for their first team selections. Baynes did not even receive honorable mention for all pac 10 or all pac 10 defensive. Get angry Coug fans. Apparently these coaches weren't paying attention to the games they were coaching.
NUSS EDIT: Be on the lookout for CougCenter's all-Pac-10 selections tonight. Trust us. Baynes will be in there.

only one way to fix this
Time for Baynes to tear up the pac 10 tourney and get the MVP.
glad to see D, TR and Klay get props
I think a big part of the reason for the Baynes snub
Is the dumb 1st team/2nd team format they went back to using — really all they’re doing is picking what’s perceived to be the top 15 players in the conference. It’s very guard heavy, which I think is unfair.
Plus, the coaches tend to reward winning more than actual play.

Are you F'n kidding me?
There’s not a one of those coaches that wouldn’t want Aron out there for them 100% of the time, guaranteed. He’s an all-star in my book, period.
You had a great year Aron.
To think that a guy
Who’s 33rd nationally and second in the conference in defensive rebounding percentage, and fourth in the conference in block percentage, can’t squeeze his way into the top 15 players? Not to mention he’s 10th in offensive rating among players with at least 20 percent of possessions used and 12th in eFG% …
I know he’s not pretty. I know he’s not as dynamic as a lot of other guys. But he’s a damn good defensive player, an above average offensive player, and that ought to count for something.
Aron was the focal point of everyone's defense....
And he was the center of our universe as well. He was about as effective a defensive presence as you will find outside of UConn and Thabeet. I don’t get it, snubbing a kid like that.
If we could have put one more legitimate offensive threat out there on the court with him, it would have been difficult at best to keep him from averaging 16 and 12 this season. Too bad Casto wasn’t a sophomore with that one extra year of experience behind him. That would have made a huge difference for Aron. The only area Aron didn’t excel in was putting up bigger numbers, but on the court, his impact was huge, even without gawdy numbers. Washington would be a national championship contender with him in the middle.
Roeland Schaftenaar?
baynes only needed to lose 100 lbs and shoot 3s. I didnt know that every team needed to have a representative
By the way
Lest I sound like I’m just complaining without a solution, I’d put him on the team ahead of both Daniel Hackett and Nic Wise.
This made me laugh...posted on Cougfan
“The most puzzling? Romar over Robinson for COY. Romar gets it because his supposedly "talent laden” team finally does not grossly underachieve, vs. Robinson who actually made something from nothing?"
Isn’t that why Tony got it two years ago? Making something out of nothing (No McDonalds All Americans…)Just hate seeing the huskies win stuff…not that I really think Romar isn’t somewhat deserving…
When we cast our initial ballots for our awards here
I voted for Romar. He has done a really masterful job melding a lot of talent. Also, who ever thought he could get those guys to play defense? Robinson really did an amazing job, but I think Romar has gotten undersold overall.
I agree that Romar was deserving of COY award....
Craig Robinson did something with OSU I didn’t think was possible, bring them back to total respectability this season. My hat’s off to both of them. You wouldn’t be wrong by choosing either for this award IMO.
I actually beleve Robinson might be the better coach of the two but want to see what he does with his own recruits. It’s not any different analysis than I would do with Tony either. I’m just happy there are so many fine coaches in the Pac-10 conference to pick from.
I don't feel like doing another huge fanpost
But look at Baynes compared to Gibson, Hill and Brockman, ostensibly the forwards / centers who kept him off the team – look here.
Of the tempo-free stats, rating 1-4:
Possession % – basically tied for 1, negligibly behind Brockman
Offensive Rating – 4, very close to Brockman and Hill, Pendergraph is way in front
Free Throw Rate – 3
True Shooting % – 2
Offensive Reb % – 4
Defensive Reb % – 2
Assist % – 4
Steal % – 4
Block % – 2
TO % – 3
I’m not really surprised he didn’t make it ahead of any of the other guys, but to not even get an honorable mention is just sad. I will also say that I think Assist % for Aron is low because usually you don’t get assists passing out of a double team, you kick it to the closest guy and then the guards swing it around the perimeter to find the open shooter. I bet he created a lot more scoring chances on offense than the stats give him credit for.
Tony Bennett for Heisman!
Although
I am pleasantly surprised that DeAngelo made All-Frosh over someone like Dunnigan, who was a starter, albiet a starter for Oregon. I’d’ve voted for him, but I didn’t think many of the people whose votes count would.
Yep
That was the pleasant surprise to me, and in some ways makes up for Baynes being snubbed. I guess I would have preferred it the other way around, since Baynes is a Senior, but actually making the Freshman team is probably a bigger honor for our team than an honorable mention.
Tony Bennett for Heisman!
For anyone that thinks Tony can't recruit....
We are just beginning to see the fruits of his labors, with more goodness to come. I’m going to be there at the Dome at 9 am Wednesday morning to get a first hand look at Anthony Brown, the 6-5 guard out of Shadle Park. Can’t wait to see that kid.
My heart will be there with all of you on the Oregon game time thread but my body will be in Tacoma listening on the radio, watching game 8 of the day. Don’t ya just love this time of the year?
Go Cougs!!!
Make sure you put up a fanpost with a scouting report!
By the way, the most fun thing I ever did as a sports writer was cover the 4A and 3A state tournaments in back to back weekends for The News Tribune back in 2002. Those tournaments were loaded with talent — Sean Mallon for Ferris, Adam Morrison for Mead, Jon Brockman was a freshman at Snohomish, Ryan Appleby at Stanwood, the Stewart twins and Nate Robinson at Rainier Beach …
Seriously. I watched basketball for 12-14 hours a day for eight days out of 11 … and got paid for it. How rad is that?
It's not hard to imagine how much fun that would be...
I will probably do what I did during the 4A tourney, watch all of the first two days. This time I will be much more prepared. Trying to do my homework on the different teams and players to make sure I don’t miss something obvious. There’s a few D1 recruits in basketball and football.
I like to people watch too. Getting to meet Marv Harshman and Lorezno Romar was quite a treat at the 4A event. I’m also going to pack a lunch both days. It’s friggin $11 for a sandwich, chips and drink. I refuse to overpay for food, so I’m taking more than just a few peanuts with me this time. Fried chicken (by me, yummy), a little doctored up greek yogurt, some propel (reusable bottle for water), peanuts and I’m good to go. It’s a bargain paying $8 for parking and $10 for an all-day pass. I will be in my seat by 8:30 or so for game #1, Shadle Park / Franklin. A super matchup to start the day.
Any suggestions or ideas for me will be much appreciated. I love helping out any way I can. First thing Friday morning I will recap my two day experience.
Go Shadle!!!
Are you serious????
Not every HM?!?!?! If Baynes gets one or two more rebounds each game he basically averages a double-double. Great job Baynes this year…you are on my 1st Team.
