Coug Baseball Exclusively in Second Place

Amid the crazier than normal offseasons for the football and basketball teams, the Cougar baseball team is quietly putting together it's best season since the Pac 10 reuinified in 1999.  Following another Pac 10 series victory, Washington State sits all alone in second place with 9 of their 12 remaining conference games in Pullman.

Wazzu lost the series opener 5-1 and was dominated by USC pitcher Brad Boxberger in a performance the Southern Cal play-by-play announcer described as "exclusively good pitching."

The Cougs brought out the bats for game two and were able to display some "exclusively good hitting" in a 13-3 blowout.  Washington State was able to jump on USC early with three runs in the first and three more in the third to build a 6-0 lead.  After Southern Cal closed within 6-3, Wazzu put up five more in the fourth, capped by a 3-run dinger by sophomore Jay Ponciano and cruised the rest of the way for the win.

Exclusively good player of the game:  Jay Ponciano, because chicks dig the long ball

On Sunday, with the nation watching (because the nation watches pirated feeds of college baseball games on the internet), the 2009 Coug baseball team was able to become "exclusive" as the victory made them the only Washington State baseball team to EVER win a series at USC.

Wazzu scored early for the second straight game as they put three on the board in the second inning after sophomore Shea Vucinich came through with a two-out, two-run single.  Starter David Stilley baffled the Trojans early on throwing beautiful curveball after beautiful curveball and the Cougs were able to take a 5-1 lead into the eighth.  WSU was able to hold on from there, eventually pulling out the win 6-4.

Exclusively good player of the game:  Shea Vucinich, who was able to woo the ladies with a solo shot to lead off the fifth.

The series victory over USC ties Wazzu for their most wins in conference play since the Pac 10 was reuinified.  The Cougs return to Pullman for a weekend series vs. Stanford.  Saturday's game will be televised live on FSN at 1pm.

WSU split a two game series with Utah earlier in the week, winning the first game 13-8 and falling in the second 9-1.

The scheduled game tonight against Gonzaga has been moved to May 19th and tommorrow's game has been cancelled due to snow.  Go Pullman!

Any more pirate feeds I need to be aware of?

You will keep me informed, right?

I was really impressed with the overall quality of what I saw against USC. A very solid Coug ballclub. I thought they were pretty sound fundamentally and I liked the way they battled at the plate. No easy outs in the bunch, a good sign obviously. I also liked what I saw of their pitching staff. Stilley was a good looking southpaw with a nice hook and good control.

The only complaint I had was the announcers kept saying Kurkendall. What’s with that? Isn’t three days long enough to figure it out. Why didn’t someone from the Cougs say something? Oh, well.

Go Cougs!!!

A couple of items:

1. We really needed to bump the Zags games. I don’t know if you guys caught the Baseball America article, but the peanut gallery seems to think only 3 teams from the Pac will make the NCAAs despite the fact that there are 8 teams with top 25 SOS, including our little ole Wazzu at No. 2!! I hate the fact when you lose game against tough competition and people beat you up for it.
2. Are we going to set a record for most guys hit by pitch? We must get at least 3-4 a game, and I am talking our batters.
3. Any word on Burg? We really need that guy, particularly after already having lost Coulter for the season. Any word on Humes? It would be nice to get another arm back for the last few nonconference games.

I've already got it tivoed just in case....

I can’t believe how much enjoyment I got out of watching the Cougs last Sunday. It looks like the baseball program is on a roll at the perfect time. Most of the players are Washington state kids. We need to get to Omaha.

If OSU can get there, so can we. Then they go out and win it back to back. Unbelievable. They did something that would have been absolutely unthinkable a few short years ago.

Go Cougs!!!

Exclusively good recap

I’ll be at B-B on Friday, hoping for some good baseball. Also, good weather.

Has anyone seen the promo for the baseball game?

“The Cougars continue their quest for a Pac 10 championship.” I love it.

This is where per game statistics go to die.
