Will we have a new coach today?

Today marks the one week anniversary of Tony Bennett shocking Coug Nation and leaving for Virginia.

And, as you may remember, a certain Athletic Director said he would ideally have a new coach on board within seven days.

So here we are. I'm going to break down the candidates by division (based on my opinion of them), which will include links to a couple of names that have surfaced in the last 24 hours:

Coaches WSU should be happy about:

Ken Bone
Stew Morrill

Coaches that might work out:

Terry Porter
Mark Gottfried

Coaches WSU should avoid:

Mike Davis
Perry Clarke

Darkhorses:

Ray Giacoletti
Dan Monson
Bennie Seltzer
Blaine Taylor

The sportslink seems to think

the job was offered last night. tic toc…. Its hard to wait.
In other news, Arizona was turned down again, this time by Sean Miller of Xavier. Ouch, they got turned down three times (at least) so far. Now who do they go after? Terry Porter? ha ha

I was thinking the same thing about Grippi

He seemed to be hinting pretty strongly yesterday morning that he thought something might happen soon, then last night he came right out and said that he thought the job might be offered. I tend to trust his assessment of the situation, so I’d say that while we might not have a new coach today, I’d be fairly surprised if we don’t at least have an offer extended to someone.

Current pac-10 coaches

Romar-Ex NBA player, national champ assistant coach, developes NBA talent (or gets)
Floyd-Ex NBA coach, gets to the tourney and wins and multiple schools, lot of NBA guys
Holland-Don’t really need to say anything there
Ernie Kent-Couple nice elite 8 runs, puts guys in the NBA talent..might be considered the worst coach in the conference right now
Sendeck-Won in the ACC, won in the Pac-10, got an all american to come to asu
Robinson-Turned OSU around in 1 year, brother in-law is the first black president
Dawkins-NBA player, National champ assistant coach, on TV every year for like 15 years
Montgomery-Ex-NBA coach, winner in college, produces NBA talent

Now, U of A doesn’t have a coach but i’m assuming they get a big name (even though everyone is turning them down)

And then our new coach. I know Tony Bennett didn’t have a resume like these guys when he took over but he was an EX NBA player and knew the program. I’m not saying having a successful resume makes you a great in game coach. But it sure helps when you have to recruit against these guys month in and month out. I know a lot of you guys don’t like Terry Porter, but he knows our system, has a big name, and could attrach some decent assistant coaches. If your a 17 year basketball player at an AAU tourney, and you get a letter from those 8 coaches, and one of the guys we are looking at. Well you likely don’t even know who the coach at utah state is by name right now. I think it out the gates has us at a disadvantage and likely going after players in the diamond and a rough mold again.

Hopefully i’m wrong and the new coach and staff hits the ground running and grabs some top 150 level players and we just keep reloading. Building a program at any level is impressive. But there is a big difference between get recruits in the Mt. West and Pac-10. Why do you think Few would never leave GU for the Pac-10.

Holland?

Never mind…you meant Howland.

Can Bone recruit with the big dogs? Will he teach tough D? Those are my big concerns. I like that Porter would keep most of the same philosophy….but don’t know if he could close the deal with potential recruits either.

If it’s Bone, the days of super tough D are over. To me, that is too bad because it is what I like the most about Bennett ball.

Its looking like Bone then.

I liked Morrill, but Bone’s proximity and youth make him a little more appealing to me.

ESPN says

Xavnier’s Miller changed his mind and is going to Arizona. Sounds like he pulled a Bennett.

Scary for the rest of us

He’s a guy who could really do some damage down there.
