Grippi's morning story on Bone hiring
From the guy who broke the story today, a few more nuggets. Including:
-- A WSU source who says he's "the right guy for us" who is "a great fit here."
-- Xavier Thames' personal spokesman, er, dad, not exactly giving a ringing endorsement for the hire.
-- Sterk saying he thinks there is a good chance of assistants being retained.

The re-recruitment of Thames is...
KB’s first big test.
If he gets Thames to WSU, that will bode well for his ability to recruit guys in my opinion. Not the definitive final word, but important nonetheless.
What’s the downside to Thames of coming to WSU? He’ll be “the man” at the point after all.
ucla wants him according to his dad....
and how would he know that unless ucla is breaking some rules….i wasn’t aware ucla had any room for thames either.
if i’m sterk, i don’t let thames out of his LOI to play for a pac-10 school, gonzaga or to follow tony. so he can either start at wsu next year or wait a year and see what his stock really is.
“Once I sign a National Letter of Intent may I be recruited by other institutions?
No. Once you sign a National Letter of Intent, all other participating conferences and institutions are obligated to cease recruiting you. Accordingly, you have an obligation to notify any recruiter from a National Letter of Intent institution of the fact you have signed a National Letter of Intent”
From a website aimed at HS players being recruited. Not the NCAA rulebook, but I don’t have the time to look for something in a document that big.

Good call
Maybe it just happens so often through intermediaries that I assumed it was kosher. Thanks.
I think so
That’s why Dad is talking so much, and referring to the AAU coach.
I think recruiting still happens, it’s now just an assistant coach “running into” an AAU coach and casually mentioning, “Player A sure looked good this year. Too bad we didn’t recruit him harder, we’d love a player like him in our program.”
dad said he talked to the AAU guys
who said UCLA and others were interested in his sons services…..
True? who knows.
I agree that getting Thames is big for us
But his Dad is starting to get on my nerves. I never like guys that feel they are suddenly “too good” for WSU, and I feel like Thames and his Dad are feeling that way. If you don’t want us, I don’t want you.
I'm not a huge X dad fan, as per my earlier posts
Remember dad said the AAU guys told him several teams were interested. AAU and I don’t see eye to eye. (being kind)
X I look forward to you talking to Bone as well, but not to explore your options, to discuss WSU hoops. That is the only discussion that matters at this moment. After that, if another conversation is needed to discuss options you can set it up with Sterk and Bone.
02coug-
I agree 320%. I hate these parents that are always trying to improve their son’s stock, playing the field, making statements, talking to the press, name-dropping schools like UCLA. If they think they are too good for Wazzu, fine, leave. We only want people who want to be here. If your only here because other schools did not give you the time of day then forgetaboutit! If he leaves, at least Bone gets to choose one recruit for next year.

from Bud W’s blog
As it happens, Ray Thames has been in touch with an old friend, the father of Portland State forward Julius Thomas of Stockton, Calif., to get a reading on Bone.
“They like him,” said the senior Thames. “They think he’s a great guy, and they like his coaching style.”
As for his son, Ray Thames said, “He still thinks Washington State is a really good fit for him. We just want to see if it’s the right fit.”
Dad just needs to step away from the reporters for a while. These quotes sound better, but just settle down dad. If Thames stays at WSU do you really think it is in your sons best interest to have your quotes all over the press.
I take it back, dad and WoolyBugger need to step away from the media
ha ha
I take it back, dad and WoolyBugger need to step away from the media
Yeah, hang on every word of people at your own peril right now.
dispite what it might sound like on the interwebs
(my bad for not putting my proper context around what I have said) quotes in print don’t usually do much for me. Media spins, tweaks contexts etc.
and I’ll stick to my Dad needs to step away comment. I’m sure he just wants what best for his kid. (a high draft pick so he can retire, ha ha) and I don’t blame him.
Now, I’ll go back to making fun of myself.
