A couple of followups to the USC news
I didn't want to clutter the front page with more about USC, so I figured I'd throw a couple of followup items your way over here in the FanPosts. Both are pieces that expanded eloquently on issues I raised ever so briefly in my post yesterday.
First, Jerry Brewer of the Seattle Times had a similar take as me with regards to the length of time the investigation is taking:
If the Trojans cheated the system, they will be dealt with eventually. Cases such as this one operate similarly to taking down a mob boss. They require meticulous, detailed investigation, not a conviction from public opinion. It may seem like the Trojans are getting off easy, but Garrett is probably sweating like a 350-pound lineman these days.
The Trojans' day is coming.
Second, Nick Daschel at Buster Sports also came to the conclusion I did about this whole mess -- it's just bad for the Pac-10 as a whole if USC gets taken down:
When USC is good, the country notices the Pac-10. As much as fans say they like the underdog, what they secretly crave is greatness.
Sorry, Cal as the Pac-10 bell cow isn’t as good for the league. Neither is Oregon or Arizona State.
Business is best in Major League Baseball when the Yankees rule. The NBA perked up last year when the league’s two traditional powers, the Lakers and Celtics, played for the championship. The NFL has great appeal regardless of who is on top, but it gets an extra bump when the Cowboys rule.
The same applies when the Trojans are atop the Pac-10.
Both are excellent reads that are worth your time.
