Cougar baseball headed to first NCAA tournament in 19 years

The Washington State baseball team is headed to Norman, Oklahoma for their first regional since before many of their current players were born.  Their section of the bracket includes Oklahoma, Wichita State, and Arkansas.  The Cougs are a 3 seed and will play Arkansas in their first matchup.  Washington State was swept by Arkansas at the beginning of the season.  They split with Oklahoma in Pullman.

Regional play begins on May 29th, no word yet when exactly the Cougs' matchup with Arkansas will be.  The tentative schedule can be found here.

Arizona State and Oregon State were the only other Pac 10 teams to make it in.

Some tournament notes:

  • The regional is a double elimination and the team that survives heads to the super-regional.
  • The super-regional is a best of three series
  • The remaining eight teams head to Omaha, NE for the College World Series, a double elimination that determines the final two teams.
  • The last two teams play a best of three series to determine the champion

Don't write the Cougs off because of their low seed.  College baseball is a different monster, as Fresno State won the tournament last year as a 4 seed.  OSU won their first title as a 3 seed.  With Matt Way heading the rotation pitching like he has of late, anything is possible!

Go Cougs!!

I really want to beat Wichita State

Show some people who the real WSU is.

And I’d like to see it on TV, just to see how they handle a potential “WSU” vs. “WSU” issue on the scorebug.

Also

Great work this weekend DF. You’ve been rocking coverage of Cougar baseball lately.

Thanks

I think this makes 8 straight Cougar baseball related posts on the front page. Who knew?

I never really liked the old tagline.

looking at the bracket

if WSU wins their regional, they’ll play the winner of Florida State regional… depending on who wins that would be in Florida, Ohio, Georgia or New York.

One nice thing with the schedule, WSU won’t meet any West Coast team till the CWS that would either be Gonzaga or CS Fullerton

What happened to Arkansas?

I remember them killing everyone to begin the year but then it looks like they started falling apart… did they lose somebody or was it just the competition towards the end?

I am really upset about the seeding.

First, we should be a 2nd seeded team. By the way for those b-ball people, this doesn’t mean the Cougs are in the top 8 in the nation. We finished with 31 wins including wins over Oklahoma and ASU.
What I am really ticked off about is the failure of the NCAA committee to be a bit creative. Why we throw in everyone that the Cougs have faced previously. Here is our first run in 19 years and we get to play teams we played during the regular season, yippee!

Weird regional.

Oklahoma has already played against everyone and we played Arkansas too.

Whoo hoo!

So excited for Cougar baseball, who woulda thunk it?! Congratulations Cougs, go get ’em!

Is there any chance any of these regionals will be televised? Is ESPN the only carrier? Looks like there focusing exclusively on the Irvine and Tallahassee regionals for the first weekend, which is a shame. Anyone know if games will be broadcast elsewhere?

Bledsoe copied my history notes.

Sadly, No TV

If you want to pay for it, you can get radio broadcasts from the official athletic site. Otherwise, you are left with the gamecast.

I never really liked the old tagline.

Check channelsurfing.net

There has been a ton of college baseball on there. You just won’t know until the day of whether someone’s going to be carrying it. We’ll put up a link if that’s the case.
