Arnold and 6th inning homers carry Cougs over Shockers
We are WSU. You are WichSt. We will live to play another day.
Chad Arnold pitched one the best performances of his career, going one out into the eighth, striking out a career-high ten Shockers en route to a 3-2 victory. Jeremy Johnson shook off his poor outing yesterday and came in to close out the ninth and secure the Cougar win.
Jordan Cooper largely dominated the Cougar lineup. He pitched the complete game, but served up two consecutive meatballs in the sixth to Cougar power hitters Derek Jones and Jared Prince. Jones pulled the ball over the right field fence for a two run homer with one out. On the very next pitch, Prince smashed the ball over the left field fence for the winning margin.
Washington State stays alive to play tommorrow. David Stilley will be on the mound to face the loser of the Oklahoma/Arkansas game this evening. The gametime tommorrow will again be 11am. If the Cougs win that one, they will play the winner of tonight's game at 5pm.
If the Cougs want to advance past tommorrow, they will undoubtedly need to put more than three runs on the board. Wichita State has an underwhelming offense and Wazzu took advantage of that today.

No matter who we face tomorrow....
I expect the bats to come to life. It seems like we struggle one game and then respond with a good game at the plate. So far we’ve been mediocre in Friday’s loss and barely got it done today.
Everyone else is going to have to put their #3 guy out there too so I’m looking forward to more runs out of our offense. Stilley is capable of putting together a solid start and turning it over to the bullpen in the later innings.
I hope we get to face Oklahoma because sweeping them twice in their home park would be a daunting task. If we can get them in a loser out game I like our chances better. I thought Arkansas was lucky to survive against us. We know we can beat Oklahoma.
We’ve got the butterflies out of the way now, and the kids can just relax. They should be acclimated to their surroundings as well. When an athlete can just compete without all the peripheral stuff getting in the way, you will start seeing better performances, the natural abilities will start coming to the surface. Our better hitters should start hitting a little bit better now that they have a couple games under their belt.
We win the first game tomorrow and we have mo going for us in game two. Come Monday afternoon, it’s winner-take-all. Anything is possible then. Go Cougs!!!
I like your optimism, but
it is going to be difficult if we have to dip into a 4th and possibly 5th starter. Yikes! We will need Stilley to go at least 6 and have either Harvey or Shewey go a couple.
It's part optimism and part reality....
I sitting here watching the Hogs take a 4-1 lead over Oklahoma in the bottom of the first and I don’t see anything out of their pitchers that scares me all that much. I’m assuming their #3 pitchers are hitable and I think we have some really decent hitters.
I think our pen is a strength. There is still a long ways to go. If we can put some crooked numbers on the board I like our chances.
Arkansas took BP off of Oklahoma's #2 starter in the first inning....
and took the Sooner crowd out of it. The stands are full. This is like a local league game for both of them. I’ve seen David Stilley pitch and he’s pretty solid.
If we don’t start hitting like we’re capable it puts too much pressure on him and just the opposite effect if we score some runs. I think the pressure is on our hitters right now.
I think we’re going to win our first game tomorrow.
I would love nothing more than being
responsible for sending 2 teams home. I like Stilley as well, but my mine concern is that he has hit the wall. Marbut doesn’t think so, but man he has struggled of late.
The umps have been giving a nice big strike zone and our pitchers have been great taking advantage of it. I am hopeful we can see it again.
Ark is killing Oklahoma. I like our chances against Ark in a 2 game series as opposed to the hometown Sooners.
Way is definitely pitching Monday if we get there if it is only for 3-4 innings to set the tone.
It was great for Burg to get some work. It may help tomorrow
Man we have missed this guy although Ponciano has helped fill the void. However with Burg, Lagried and Prince we are just a different team.
FYI: It appears that Arnold has indicated an intent to go pro as well. So we are likely to be losing Johnson and him. I was really hoping that those 2 with Stilley could give a solid 3 starters. Conley may be one of our future starters, but hopefully Johnson sticks around to prove he can be a starter.
Burg looked to me like his knee is still really bothering him....
I noticed it most in the 9th when he had to go after a pop foul. We could sure use his bat. His glove saved us too with a nice pick late in the game.
I think Arnold really helped his draft situation today. College baseball is all about adjusting every single year. It’s hard to turn down life-changing $$ when you get the opportunity and the coaching staff has to develop more kids. Conley is going to be a good one. If Johnson sticks around that would be really sweet. I have a feeling there are a couple kids on the roster that will step up, and there are always new kids coming in that get a shot at one of those slots too.
If Arnold stuck around another year, he might be a very high pick, just a guess. Arnold has Friday night starter written all over him but it sounds like he already has made up his mind. Hope I’m wrong. Would love to get another year out of him.
I think the world of Matt Way and hope JZ of the M’s feels the same way. He’s a stud with a huge upside.
I like the direction of the program. Losing Prince hurts but someone will take his place, that’s just the way it’s supposed to be. I am grateful for the legacy he has left but hopefully we have a few more chances to see him perform. I’m hoping he has a great game against the Sooners tomorrow. He has a way of doing his best when the stakes are the highest.
Go Cougs!!!
I'm all about veterans. There is nothing that beats it except maybe an uber
talents frosh.
I think Johnson is going to have a hard time getting a good draft pick. He is small and has had arm troubles. I think the majors would like to see another year out of him.
Arnold will probably go somewhere in the rounds 20-30. His control has been less than stellar, but he does pitch well while in jams.
My hope is that Way has improved his position from a Rd 36 pick to a pick in the first 5 rounds. I haven’t seen any projections, but he has pretty much dominated everyone and all the coaches that see him pitch say he is one of the best lefties in college baseball.

I think you've pretty much nailed it....
Arnold could use another year and hone his skills. If he’s going to be selected that late in the draft, one more year at Wazzu might make it worth it for him $$-wise to jump up into the top 5 or 10 rounds.
WSU is going to have a good team and he could be the leader of a stellar pitching staff. Arnold, Johnson and Conley is a great start and I know there’s more in the cupboard than that. Great pitching staffs make it possible to have a great team, just look at ASU.
Arkansas blasted Oklahoma 17-6....
It’s up to Stilley to give us a solid performance. He certainly doesn’t have to be perfect but 6 solid innings would really be nice. More would be a real plus.
Our bats have to start producing more runs. Prince is our only consistent hitter making solid contact lately. Ponciano and Burg and the rest of them have got to produce more runs. We need a couple kids to step it up.
Losing to Arkansas like that had to hurt Oklahoma’s pride and they don’t have a whole lot of time to shake it off. We’re coming off a big win and get to play during the day again. Oklahoma has had both their games in the evening. That might make a difference. I watched every pitch of their Arkansas loss and didn’t see anything that really concerns me. They are a really good team but not real deep in the pitching department.
The home plate ump was plain lousy, never establishing a consistent strike zone. Oklahoma’s coach got tossed in the 8th or 9th trying to get his pitcher a break and I don’t blame him for going out the to confront the man in blue. The announcers were really nice about it but it was something that I noticed throughout the game. I’m glad we won’t have to deal with this guy tomorrow afternoon, as they usually rotate the assignments.
I still think the wildcard for us is our bats. If we can get on the board early it might help us relax and take the crowd out of it. Oklahoma is going to be hard-pressed to get over the ass-kicking they took tonight. The only concern any Coug player should have is with the Sooners. The rest takes care of itself.
Bring on the Sooners!!! Go Cougs!!!
Don't get too down about only scoring three runs against Wichita St.
Those guys have an excellent pitching staff — it’s their offense that let them down most of the year. I thought Wichita St. was a pretty scary matchup because of that.
That said, I’m with the rest of you. I’m glad we’re facing Oklahoma today. Their pitching staff drops off real fast after their No. 1 guy, and I’m pretty confident that Stilley is better than anyone they’re going to throw out there. The question is, can our offense keep up? Because those Sooner bats are downright scary.
Arkansas had their way with Oklahoma's pitching staff....
Their #2 guy didn’t get out of the first inning last night and Wichita State hit their ace pretty hard too.
I think there’s a decent chance we will face their #1 guy today. He didn’t throw many pitches Friday night so he’s probably ready to go.
According to the game recap of yesterday's OU-Ark game
Garrett Richards will start today
I never really liked the old tagline.

After I saw the game thread with that info....
I figured their #2 would be available at the first sign of trouble. Unfortunately for us, that never happened. Oklahoma is going to be hard-pressed to beat Arkansas twice.
