A dragnet? Really? This whole thing is starting to smack of the same small-town crap that stupid sheriff out in South Carolina tried to pull with Michael Phelps.

Yes, there is a warrant for Leaf's arrest. But I'm wondering if they threaten dragnets for all wanted burglary suspects who are out of their jurisdiction, or just former NFL quarterbacks.

Don't Mess with Texas

Texas is probably the worst place in the country to get caught doing something wrong. The sentences are long and unforgiving down there. Talk about “The Longest Yard”!

As John McGrath pointed out this morning

Any chance he had at being treated with kid gloves is going out the window right now …

I did a little research on Randall County

James Farren is the District Attorney in Randall County. Right now there are over 9,000 open arrest warrants in Randall County ranging from MIP to who-knows-what and Ryan Leaf seems to be at the top of the list. Is this a case of a small town looking to make a name for itself? James Farren sounds like he’s after some justice.

This story is getting a whole lot of media attention. My guess is when Ryan turns himself in, the cameras will be rolling. I’m anticipating a media frenzy.

I am anxious to hear Ryan’s side in all of this and how effective his lawyer, Bill Kelly is in defending him. Even with all his antics of the past, I don’t view Ryan Leaf as a criminal on the run. I look at him more as a scared-to-death, immature ex-athlete that realizes he is messing with people that are dead serious on making an example of him. He knows he’s going to prison. He picked the wrong place to get indicted for 9 felonies.

An interesting side note: Gil Farren is employed by the Sheriff’s Department in the Victim Services Program. The job description says she works closely with the District Attorney’s Office. My guess is that she works ‘very closely’ with the DA. You can be the judge on her relationship with James Farren. If there is a victim in all of this, it has to be the guy that turned Ryan in for breaking into his apartment.

This whole thing is getting totally blown out of proportion.

Just arrested

He’s going to be in court in Bellingham this afternoon. My sister (a Dawg) was kind enough to forward me an article from king 5 (it’s on their front page if your interested for some reason). I’m in Bellingham right now but don’t know if I could stand to watch.

Not too bothered, actually

Leaf was such an a-hole outside of football that I never particularly rooted for him to succeed. I actually have more empathy for him as a failed high draft pick (so much pressure!) than as a former Cougar.

Caveat: I wasn’t enough of a sports and / or Cougar fan to really understand the historical implications when we made the Rose Bowl that year, so maybe that’s why I’m not as concerned about him, I dunno.
