Thompson, Casto picked for U-19 national team
Updated at 4:10 p.m.
The official word is in -- Klay Thompson and DeAngelo Casto will be representing the United States at the FIBA U19 tournament in New Zealand from July 2-12.
It's clear from the roster that Pitt coach Jamie Dixon and the selection committee, led by Jim Boeheim, were looking for long, versatile players who can shoot the ball -- generally accepted as the way to win games in international competition. (Look what happened once the Redeem Teamers gave in to that idea.)
"We'll be able to score the ball well on the wing,'' Dixon said. "We can shoot. We will be able to put four guys on the floor who can shoot the ball."
People around the country will probably raise their eyebrows in surprise at Thompson and Casto making the team, but I won't be one of them. We know how good Thompson is, and while his offense gets most of the attention, he is an excellent defender and defensive rebounder -- two facts that likely weren't lost on Dixon, Boeheim and the rest of the selection committee. And Casto is an asset as a guy who is an exceptional rebounder and defender around the rim. Here's to hoping he can stay out of foul trouble.
It also shows that the selection committee is interested in putting together the best team, not necessarily the greatest collection of names (again, it worked pretty well for the Redeem Team).
This is nothing but fantastic news for WSU. Having Thompson make the team is great, but having Casto on the squad even better. Any experience he can get under the tutelege of excellent coaches such as Dixon and Purdue's Matt Painter -- both of whom have coached superlative post players -- will help for this upcoming season. If this team is going to be any good this year, Casto is a guy who's going to have to step up in a big way. And this helps.
EDIT, 4:10 P.M.: Here are some comments from Thompson and Casto courtesy of the WSU SID. (It also has a photo of each at the tryouts. Is it just me or does it look like Casto hit the weights?)
Thompson
"It feels great to make the team, it's an honor especially playing at a national level against high level competition. It was tough competition throughout the trials, and I'm thankful for this opportunity to represent my country."
Casto
"It means everything to make the team. It was kind of emotional for me, a little hard for me a little bit too. Having been through so much, I got to a spot where basketball has been my outlet. So it means the world to make the team and it's an honor to be able to put that jersey on with USA on your chest."
One other thing I forgot to mention earlier -- Brock Motum will play for Australia in the tournament.

Awesome.
I wish it was on TV! I’m so bored during the summer and watching Casto and Thompson play would surely help that.
I am so proud of these kids....
What a wonderful opportunity for them. Work hard and kick some butt.
They will not only increase an already considerable skill set, but bring back leadership skills that will translate into a more successful season for our program. They will be perceived in a whole different way and more will be expected of them. We’re in for a special treat next season.
This is the kind of news that makes me giddy to be a Coug.
I noticed there are two kids on the roster from Butler....
So it turns out we weren’t the only program with more than one invite. That’s cool. Just saying….
Wow!
Not one, but two players on this squad?!? This can only help both Thompson and Casto…and therefore the Cougs as a whole as well. Hard to believe that WSU has two of the top 19 and under players in the United States. This is just fantastic news! Soak it up, guys and don’t forget to bring the lessons and experience back to Pullman in the fall.
I am ready for basketball season right now…and I’m a football guy!
Casto
Looks like banging with Baynes in the paint last year paid off big for Casto. Andy Katz reported that, “The buzz on the U-19 team after Day One was how strong Casto played inside; the shooting from Hayward; the athleticism of Ole Miss’ Terrico White on the perimeter; and the likelihood that without Connecticut’s Kemba Walker (he withdrew), the team’s best point may be incoming Florida freshman Kenny Boynton.”
On a different note, does anyone know when next season’s basketball schedule will be released? (UW and UCLA already released theirs)
I think it's pretty well set
But they probably are working on a few things and aren’t ready to release the whole thing.
Also...
Brock Motum is playing for the Australian team :)
Three Cougs will be in the U19 World Championship tournament!
so don't quote me on any of this(!)...
I was watching the NBA Draft Combines on ESPNU last night and I’m pretty sure the tracker said the tournament would be aired on ESPNU. I can’t find a TV Schedule anywhere, so I can’t confirm. (If you are in Seattle area and have Broadstripe – ESPNU Ch. 247).
A little look at the schedule – our initial group (B) includes Egypt, France, Iran, USA
If I’m converting my times correctly….
1st Game – Iran vs. USA, Wed. July 1st, 3 p.m.
2nd Game – France vs. USA, Thursday, July 2nd, 3 p.m.
3rd Game – Egypt vs. USA, Friday, July 3rd, 4 p.m.
If you look at the talent in Group A, who we will face in the second round – this is when the tourney will heat up a bit! Angola, Greece, Lithuania, and Puerto Rico.

Casto's quote got me to thinking
Does anyone know what kind of work he is doing in the classroom? I know that was one of the major concerns about him coming in. The quote of his suggests that he has really come into his own as a young man who is aware of his own fortune. I love hearing interviews, or reading interviews, for that matter, with the Cougar B-Ball players because they come across so level-headed and intelligent. Hope that continues through the next regime.
