Around SBN: Ray Allen Fighting Age, Injury And His New Role

AUDIO: Paul Wulff press conference

What should have been a lighthearted and fun press conference today starts off on a somber note -- James Montgomery's season-ending leg injury. Other items of note in the presser:

  • Marshall Lobbestael will start again.
  • They wanted to play Jeff Tuel, but the opportunity didn't present itself. They will continue to prepare him, but whether he gets in a game will depend largely on Lobbestael's play. If the opportunity doesn't present itself over the next handful of games, they'll be OK with redshirting him. (By extension it sure sounds like they've given up on Lopina.)
  • Carl Winston might play given Montgomery's injury. But he's in the same boat as Tuel.
  • His thoughts on UW/USC. (Turnovers and QB play.)
  • How to cope with the pressure of playing USC in the Coliseum.
  • I feel bad for the poor guy who had the big crash sound come over his phone.
  • His thoughts on Phase III.

Did Logwone Mitz magically disappear?

I like Carl Winston, actually I like our whole RB depth, but I just can’t seem to wrap my head around why the coaching staff isn’t giving Logwone more of a shot to make an impact.

Also: F#@#. My favorite player on this team is done for the year. I guess that’s why he only touched the ball nine times against SMU. I really thought Monty and Tardy combined could possibly be the catalyst for us to eek out a conference win. Now our odds of doing that just went down.

Let’s go Dwight. Time to step it up.

Yeah, the Montgomery thing is horrible

Both for him personally — the way Wulff describes it makes it sound downright scary as crap — and for the team. He was the one guy on the team who had the potential to take over a game and win it for us. We haven’t had that in the backfield since about, oh, 2006? And now it’s gone.

You're welcome

It’s the WSU SID that deserves the thanks. After they e-mail it to us, all I have to do is upload it and pass it along. But I’m glad we’re able to do it so you can hear Wulff’s comments first hand.

Like, for example, his “joke” about shooting the horse. There’s nothing quite like hearing awkward silence and nervous laughter out of the media when they’re not sure how to react to something the coach just said. “Was that inappropriate? Or funny? Um … ha ha?”
