College football game day thread
I'm sitting here watching Oregon/Cal and VaTech/Miami and I thought, "Hey, maybe there are other people who want to talk about these games?"
So here you go. Talk away.

Um, I think what Oregon is doing right now is what a no-huddle offense is supposed to look like.
Holy piss. Poor Cal. The guys over at CGB are crapping themselves right now.
GoodBye another bcs payout for the pac-10
if cal loses… another $$ loss for the pac-10 … could only get one bcs bowl payout… mike price & utep is being blown out by texas….could be a preview of the usc game ?
So was I.
We are all like-minded individuals.

Does anyone remember the saturday morning cartoon short,
Great minds think differently?

Lets see we have
- Losing big, # 9 losing big, # 4 lost, #15 losing, #18 lost, #22 lost. I guess its going to be like two years ago where the top ranked teams play musical chairs.
Vote for Butch!
that first one should have been # 6

I'm wondering if all the people who thought Oregon was beatable at Autzen in two weeks still feel that way
I think they have the 2nd toughest
opening 4 games in the nation. With Miami being 1st

That's new in the Seattle area
and by “new” I mean less than 10 months old.

Here is the trivia question of the day-
When was the last time Florida played a non-conference game outside the state of Florida?
Vote for Butch!
That is BS
Every year they play 2 horrible teams, and FSU, thats it. If USC sat at home and never traveled they would get riped for it.
In the last 6 years USC has traveled to: OSU, Notre Dame, Nebraska, Arkansas, Virginia Tech, BYU, Auburn.

Exactly
Wasn’t Georgia’s game at ASU last year their first game on the West Coast since like 1962? Nobody ever talks about the SEC non-conference schedules. They are the equivalent of soggy cereal.

It's why people talk about getting rid of the Pac-10 round robin
To which I ask: Why is everyone asking the Pac-10 to lower its standards?
I don’t know if you listened to the Conquest Chronicles interview, but we talked about this very thing.
Well, if your high standards don't help
the perception of the conference, what’s the point?

by spencer peaty on Sep 26, 2009 2:50 PM PDT up reply actions
The point is that the system is flawed
And it keeps changing. If you constantly strive to conform with a flawed and changing system … heck, who am I kidding. There’s no penalty for that.
I expected that their offense might struggle a bit
But I did not expect their D to get run over like this.
wall street & football polls
what do they have in common … there are no experts . texas up 47 to 7 against utep, goes for a field goal with time running out in the 1st half ….what a class- guy mack brown is!
They are still pretty good.
VT does this to good teams all the time.

Gosh, Kevin Riley is horrible
It’s amazing to me that Tedford has never been able to get even a serviceable QB during his time at Cal.
No

No he wasn't, he was a JUCO guy, got there in 2003
Tedford became the coach in 02

by thecassino on Sep 26, 2009 3:00 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions
You're right though
There was a time when he was considered a QB guru, though his track record begs to differ.
Now a runningback guru, that Id buy.

by thecassino on Sep 26, 2009 3:03 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions
Yeah he's a heck of a coach
I was disappointed when he backed out of the UW OC spot.
Teds still calling the plays though right? Gotta give him credit for that much as far as his RBs have gone.

by thecassino on Sep 26, 2009 3:10 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions
Sure
But it’s a lot easier to run with enormous holes. Savvy football fans know what Michelczek is doing down there.
As an aside, if you ask the Cal fans what they think of Tedford’s play calling abilities, you get a VERY different assessment.
This is one of many reasons why the Pac-10 gets ridiculed nationally
It would be one thing if Cal went in there and lost a squeaker. But it always seems like our conference’s highly regarded teams go out and lay an egg and get killed.
Lose by 40 on the road to an unranked team? Couldn’t be because Oregon is better than people thought. It’s because Cal must be horrendously overrated.
Akey's got that program going places.
http://www.spartyandfriends.com/
by thecassino on Sep 26, 2009 3:07 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions
Good for him
That program has been a coach killer for the last 20 years. Holt ran as fast as he could from that place.
If there's one positive to this Cal game
Reid Forrest has now been cemented as the conference’s best punter.
sucking sound
that sucking sound is cal’s season & heisman for best … going down the drain. a loss this big would most likley keep cal from a bcs game… top ten finish and the heisman for best.
I disagree
Lots of games left. People overreact to easily.
Let’s say Oregon goes undefeated in Pac-10 play and Cal wins out the rest of the way. Is it guaranteed that we only get one BCS team? I’d say no.
pac 10
pac 10- top- teams will beat each other up this year so will be hard to have two 1 loss teams
Isn't it pretty much always a guarantee we only get one BCS team?
In 11 BCS seasons, it’s only happened twice. OSU and UW in ’01, and us and USC in ’03.
There are only three seasons where the Big Ten hasn’t had two teams in. And people wonder why their conference is so against a playoff.
By the way, for those who were wondering about WSU cancelling on Hawaii
The guys calling the Clemson/TCU game just said that TCU is getting $1 million for playing this game in Death Valley. I’m guessing that’s what the Cougs are looking for.
Very nice payout.
Especially for TCU, because it is not an instant loss for them.
by Craig Powers on Sep 26, 2009 3:30 PM PDT up reply actions
Clemson, second and 10 with a minute to go from own 40
Passed it nine yards. Everyone stands around. TICK TICK TICK
3rd and 1: Bad shotgun snap with 40 seconds to go, covered up by RB. Everyone stands around. TICK TICK TICK
4th and 1: Snap with 15 seconds left, run around, run around, run around, heave it to the 10. Incomplete with 2 seconds left in the game.
That’s when coaches should be fired. No excuse for that.
DeMaundray Woolridge is looking pretty good.
by Craig Powers on Sep 26, 2009 3:37 PM PDT up reply actions
I really mean that. Good for Akey.
Too bad he couldn’t have been our coach. Although, he may yet be …
Yah, I'm not so sure it is out of the question.
I love that guy. I sat at the 35 behind the defense so I could listen to him.
by Craig Powers on Sep 26, 2009 3:44 PM PDT up reply actions
I was really worried for him when he took the job at Idaho.
But he seems to be making progress. They wouldn’t have beat ANYBODY on the road a few years ago.

Good luck WSU
See you boys next week.
Make it two shockers in a row against USC (or at least keep it close).

I'm an Oregon fan
And I never dreamed that big a win for us. That’s honestly about the best game I’ve ever seen us play.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Complete shocker.
Hopefully they play significantly worse next week.
by Craig Powers on Sep 26, 2009 4:27 PM PDT up reply actions
Sorry, not gonna happen
Love ya guys and I hope you enjoy your trip but I don’t think it’ll be fun for you.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
At least you got Bone as your BB coach
I’m a Portland State grad student and guy can recruit in the NW with inferior facilities. He’ll do well for you.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
I should clarify that, actually.
Giving Jahvid Best only 16 touches (I believe only one in the second half) is idiotic. But I really can’t knock Tedford too much, when you consider that Kevin Riley is really just that bad.
He did what most coaches do.
Fall behind a few TD. THROW THROW THROW.
by Craig Powers on Sep 26, 2009 4:23 PM PDT up reply actions
Which is idiotic
because Jahvid Best is amazing and Kevin Riley sucks.
by Craig Powers on Sep 26, 2009 4:25 PM PDT up reply actions
That's cool if you have a competent QB
But really Cal just laid an egg today. I guess that isn’t entirely Tedford’s fault
I dare you to post the same thing at CGB.

Although I think I will tell them
That those old trees behind the stadium deserve to be protected. I hear that goes over well there.
Haha!
Yeah they don’t really like being grouped with the hippie Berkeley folks.

Oregon's D plan worked
They had to make Reiley beat them and he couldn’t do it. Cal was benefiting from single coverage all day but they couldn’t make it happen.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
WOOT.
I’ve been flipping to that game occasionally. Every time I watch it, it is touchdown FLA.

it’s on versus, it might be on channelsurfing.net.

After one full quarter!
ASU is sort of driving too.

By the way, the only reason Oregon dominated
Throwbacks. Green and yellow are awesome school colors. I guess I should thank Nike for obliterating that most weeks and throwing in gray, black, pink, etc.
We should go back to the Russell unis with the stripes down the side.
Most successful uniform in Cougar history.
by Craig Powers on Sep 26, 2009 4:35 PM PDT up reply actions
I have a soft spot for those
Even though it’s not the best design. But it does use our school colors well, especially at home.
Also, I wore my #1 jersey from that era to the game against SMU and we won.
So it’s also lucky.
I loved that Apple Cup when we used those unis with the gray pants.

shirts that fit
at least we should get nike to supply shirts that fit &keep the shoulder pads in.
OSU-UA starting soon.
I wish someone from WSU would have invented store-bought potato salad. Or at the very least something on the level of the personal computer…
Just kicked off
Canfield air mailed his first pass.

paul allen
tobad he spent all his $$ on the seahawks …wsu could use some help.
He does not care about our sports.
And overall he donates a lot more money to UW.

I remember a football game once where they called offensive PI.
by Craig Powers on Sep 26, 2009 4:57 PM PDT up reply actions
They called a key one against Utah last week
That helped snuff out one of their drives against UO. It was a really obvious one though, pushed Walter Thrumond III to the ground right in front of the Umpire.

Trivia time!
Name the overrated conference that scheduled these wussy opponents:
Southern Miss
Tenn Tech
UTEP
UAB
Grambling St.
LA Lafayette
Houston
Northwestern State
Army
Nevada
Special bonus: Find the one team that doesn’t fit!
Lesson here, kids: schedule weak opponents and your conference champion earns the right to get blown out in the national title game!
Houston is not a wussy team
But that is the Big 12 isn’t it.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Yes
And Houston is the
Special bonus: Find the one team that doesn’t fit!
Because they aren’t horrible.
UGA is not looking good against ASU
If ASU could score, this game would actually be close and interesting
Ok anyone want to predict a final score?
I got WSU 17 – USC 54
That's being incredibly optomistic
Especially considering I’m doubting Pete Carroll is going to be in a very gracious mood. I’ll go on the record as saying 6-69.
60 yarder
for Gerhart. please bring the purple back to reality
There are a couple of streams on Justin.TV that say they'll stream it after another game is over
Here is one of them but that game still has the fourth quarter to go.
