The cougars look like an actual football team now. I am excited to watch them now as I had found it very hard to in the past. Before we would be out of the game by the second quarter and we would get run over so bad it was a struggle to watch. Watching the cougs now is fun. They make some great plays on offense and get some big stops against powerful teams like Oregon and Arizona. This football team has improved a lot in the past three weeks. We have beaten the spread by more than 7 points against UCLA, Oregon, and Arizona. All three of those games we had many opportunities to win. The only reason we had a shot at UCLA and Oregon is because of our offense. The cougar D performed very bad getting run over all game long.
The Arizona game however was very different. Giving up only 3 touchdowns all game long was pretty impressive against a great Arizona team. Yes it is true that their star QB was out but the team still completed 20/27 passes thrown. Also Matt Scott the Arizona back up was much better at running the ball and scrambling when there was pressure on him. But none the less giving up 3 td's was incredible especially considering one was given up directly after a fumbled punt inside the 10. The only problem with that game was our offense was not playing the same football we had seen them play the previous weeks. To many passes were dropped and tipped leading to interceptions thrown. Blackledge's drop through the hands at the goal line was terrible as it lead to a field goal attempt that was missed. Wilson's 83 yard catch was awesome but they couldnt cap it off and ended up throwing an interception that tipped off of his hands in the back of the end zone. Even the trick play lead to an immediate turnover after getting a big stop on fourth down.
There were many little things we could have done that could have lead to a win like snapping the ball up to Tuel's hands and not at his ankles. Even just keeping your eye on the ball until you pull it into your body. The day that our D and our offense play well together will be our first pac-10 win this year. Once we can string them both together we can get the ball on offense more often and put it in the end zone. If our D can force some three and outs or some turnovers then I think we will have a great shot at winning some games!
But for now I am very pleased the way we have been playing, thank you for giving us fans something to begin cheering about!
