WSU Vs. Portland Basketball Recap: Charts And Awards
The chart widgets over at statsheet.com are malfunctioning at the moment (There's no four factors, and the game flow sheet says at one point the Pilots led us 606-71)... so it may be a while for happy charts.
EDIT NUSS, 5:30 p.m. Wednesday: Here they are!
In the meantime, we'll get you through this cold night with Craig's thoughts below, and my awards.
Player of the Game: Klay Thompson. There's no contest here. What is it about Klay versus the WCC? He put up his career high in the Great Alaska Shootout against San Diego, and had what I believe is clearly the second best performance of his career tonight. The efficiency with which he destroyed the Pilots was mind-boggling. 35 points on 13 of 16 shooting (3/4 from three, 6/6 from the line), with 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 blocks versus 2 turnovers. Incredible.
Right Hand Man: I've invented a new award, because the second best player in a game isn't really the 'unsung hero', but still deserves recognition. Or maybe I should just call it the Faisal Aden award. Especially if he keeps complimenting Klay like this. 21 points on 8 of 15 shooting, and a key 9 points-in-a-row stretch during the decisive run of the game.
Unsung Hero: Patrick Simon. His minutes were limited due to foul trouble, but he had 6 points on 50% shooting and showed he wasn't afraid to make himself an offensive weapon. Of the triumvirate of guys competing for minutes at the 4 spot (Simon, Motum, Lodwick), Patrick is becoming the guy I feel most comfortable with shooting the ball. Now if he could just start cleaning the boards and defending well without fouling.
Play of the Game: Marcus Capers ignites the Cougars in their key run with a...
It was over when... The dust settled from the Cougs' huge run, and they re-established a 20 point lead at 82-62 with about 4 minutes remaining. This team can score in bunches. This was probably the most fun I've had watching any sporting event since the Sounders' Open Cup title. (Note: I was mainly nervous for most of the Cougs' football win over OSU)
Stat of the Game: Look at Klay Thompson's line again. Just look at it. I want to buy it a nice seafood dinner, and then take it home with me.

This is the first game I've been able to see...
…and it was pretty clear we outclassed them from the tip. Such a nice thing to say after football season. Speaking of, did anyone else notice that Portland went on it’s big run right after Paul Wulff’s halftime speech?

StatSheet charts working now
There was an errant game score that I’ve fixed so all the charts should be working now:
http://statsheet.com/mcb/games/2010/11/23/portland-68-washington-state-84
Aden is currently KT's wing man.
We will see what happens when Reggie returns.
"The rent is too damn high!" Jimmy McMillan
DeAngelo
Any thoughts on Casto? It looked like he was sleepwalking last night. The blocks and boards were alright, but he just handed them the ball a number of times.
this is not new
Casto has always had trouble accepting an entry pass.
And our best passer wasn't in the game
I think DeAngelo will be alright when Reggie returns and can drive and dish to him.
did anyone listen to the game on the radio?
there were several questionable fouls called against us, particularly in the first half, and I’m wondering if Bud’s head exploded and if he’ll be alright for the next game.
There were several questionable calls on Portland in the second half, too
It was just sort of lame all around. Too much ticky-tack crap being called. Unfortunate.
Thoughts on Bone's quote
From Steve Kelly’s column in the Seattle Times:
“Reggie will give us one more piece so that at times we can go smaller,” said Bone, a former Washington assistant. “He’ll give us more depth. We would like to go small at times and put Klay almost at a four (power forward), like we used to do with Brandon Roy at the U.”
Love hearing this. It is pretty obvious that our 5 best players are Klay-Aden-Reggie-Capers and Casto—This would allow us to have them on the floor at the same time. (BTW the comment in the prior post that Aden will be the 6th man in hilarious—you don’t bring your 2nd best player off the bench)
Outside of those 5 I liked what I saw from Simon last night…he plays with confidence as evidenced by knocking down an 18 footer straight off the bench. I think he can be a candidate for up to 20 minutes/night off the bench.
Motum show some great flashes but at times tries to do too much. There were a couple of times in the 2nd half when UP was making runs that Motum forced things on offense leading to poor shots or turnovers; these came on crucial possessions where we need to find Klay or Faisel (or Reggie when he returns) one has to know his own limitations and there are times in the game when the 7th/8th man should not be shooting.
Winson Jr, has excellent handles but at this point in time does not understand how the point guard position is played. He went 1-on-1 early in the shot clock one time in the first half and it resulted in a wildly bad shot. He does not get the team into the offense fluidly and cannot set up our shooters with regularity. I do not foresee him being a regular contributor this season.
Lodwick is a guy I have never figured out. He is capable of knocking down some big shots but makes some poor decisions and can just get lost on the court for long stretches. Needs to be a bigger factor on the glass to justify his minutes.
First time seeing Aden and he is everything advertised. This kid can score at will and is going to torch teams that run too many defenders at Klay. Reminds me of a skinnier Terrence Lewis.
Klay looked amazing tonight he will benefit more than anyone from Reggie’s return. When he has a chance to step into his shot like he did a few times last night he is absolutely lethal.
Casto has to just slow down a bit on the offensive end. Everything from just catching an entry pass into the post to kicking the ball back out to the perimeter seemed rushed and resulted in a few turnovers.
Capers is amazing and is growing into his role as a Kyle Weaver-style stat sheet stuffer. Good teams need players that make big contributions w/out scoring double digit points. Capers is that type of ball player.
Aden
Just because you don’t start doesn’t mean you won’t see a lot of minutes. Your starting five don’t necessarily be your best five (in fact your best five should be on the court in the final minutes). I think Aden as a sixth man would perfect. You need an experienced player and a decent defender (Abe) to start and set a tone and you need a scorer in Aden to be your sixth man and come off the bench and put up some points.
As you could see from yesterday, scoring early didn’t really mean much. Scoring late won that game.

6th man
Like how Phil Jackson brought Scottie Pippen off the bench to win all those championships. Kelvin Sampson did not bring me off the bench when I was the 2nd best scorer on the team as a freshman.
I have no problem with Lodwick starting but if thats the case then Capers moves to the bench.
PG Reggie Moore 30-35mins
Wing Klay Thompson 35mins (with 5-10 mins at the 4 spot)
Wing Faisel Aden 30-35 mins
Post Abe Lodwick 20 mins
Post DeAngelo Casto 30 mins
Bench
Capers 20-30 mins
Simon 15-20 mins
Motum 5-15 mins
Winston 5-10 mins

every good team has one of its best shooters come off the bench
Aden is not Scottie Pippen. Aden is Steve Kerr.

also, it should go without saying
that we’re still playing with a VERY small sample size with Aden so far. He has not faced a defense yet that is out of the realm of those he faced in Juco. We have no idea if he’ll be able to do this in January.

Some good tests coming up
Obviously K-State with their guards and Gonzaga. They also get Mississippi State and potentially Baylor in Hawaii. A good slate of games to see where they are at before heading into conference.
Terrance Lewis came to mind when I saw Aden last night and I think is a pretty good comparison point for Aden although Lewis was pretty good on defense as well. Aden needs to improve in that area.
I can see both perspectives on starting or bringing Aden off the bench but I think I would start him if he continues to show he can shoot well as the competition gets better.
Moore, Thompson, Aden could be as good a point/wing combination as we have had in a long time.
"you don’t bring your 2nd best player off the bench"
Aden is our second-best scorer, not our second-best player.
That said, with the way we play defense, having your second-best scorer starting the game is a good thing. We’re going to have to win a lot of shootouts this year.
Yup.
WCC schools (outside of Gonzaga, obviously) might have one guy who is athletic and long enough to bother a player like Klay, but they don’t have many other options if that player needs rest or gets in foul trouble. You might’ve noticed yesterday that Capers guarded Stohl, but when Capers went to the bench, we had Klay switch to him to maintain that length against his quick jumper.
BTW, watching Klay in person for the first time this year (outside of the LCSC “game”, anyway), I was totally impressed at how good his defense has become. I knew he was underrated as a defender, but last night I watched him for quite a few entire possessions, and was amazed at how relentless he is with his defense.
Charts are fixed now
Everything looks right.
