Craig Ehlo, Coug

There has been much criticism of Craig Ehlo in these parts. The problem for the Cougar faithful seems to be that Craig appears to be loyal to Gonzaga, not the Cougs. Also, apparently he just doesn't "know enough" about the Cougs. I'll address those charges shortly.

Star-divide

Lest any of us forget, Craig is a Coug. Those of us who watched him play will never forget Glenn Johnson announcing the starting lineup: "Craig EEEEEEEEEEEEEE-LO!!" The crowd was totally worked up and wild. George Raveling said that he "played on the ragged edge of being out of control." I have never seen any Coug play harder or with more absolute joy for the game.

He spent 14 years (14 YEARS!) in the NBA, an honorable Cougar for every day of them. Someone will probably mention "The Shot." Well, in that game, he scored 24 points while playing on a sprained ankle. And the guy who made the shot wasn't half bad.

He has never had a bad or unkind word for WSU or the Cougar family. Further adding to Cougar pride, he was one of 10 inaugural basketball inductees into the Pac-10 Conference Hall of Honor. The other inductees were John Wooden, Pete Newell, Sean Elliott, Byron Scott, John Dick, Gary Payton, Bill Sharman, Hank Luisetti, and Bob Houbregs. Not bad company.

At WSU, Craig established a then-season record of 136 assists for conference games. He averaged two steals per game.

His mistake seems to be that after the NBA, he went out and got a job -- in sports. He had the nerve to work for a different school. How could he be so thoughtless?

He broadcasts for Gonzaga. That's his job. He gets paid to do it. Are any of you expecting that when he calls the Coug/GU game that he'll be a rabid Coug Fan? Did Keith Jackson gush about the Cougars when he called games?

Bud Namek is a great guy and a fine caller of Coug games. But folks, he's doing it because he's being paid to do it. He's our home announcer and he had better be a fan of the team when he's in the booth. But when all is said and done, it's his job.

What's ironic is that Ehlo is blatantly and obviously a Cougar fan. His coverage of the LSU game was almost embarrasing for how much he gushed over the Cougs.

It has been said that he doesn't "know" the team very well. Actually, I think he shows great depth of knowledge and great respect for Ken Bone's approach and for the team's play and effort. You know, it wasn't Ehlo who made Enquist the player of a recent game. But if it had been, I have a feeling we'd still be hearing about how stupid and ignorant Craig Ehlo is.

This is my opinion only, but I believe his game analysis is spot-on. He sees things going on that most commentators miss. I will not put him at the same level as Stephen Bardo -- who may be the best in the business -- but I'll let him be in the same league. He's had broadcasting experience in the NBA, having called a season for the Sonics.

Finally, I think it bears repeating that we don't speak ill of a Coug. And in Craig's case, one of the greatest and most loyal Cougars of all time.

My main problem isn't that he "Had the nerve to go out and get a job at another school"...

My main problem is that he isn’t very good at it. His voice just isn’t a broadcasting voice and his personality just gets on my nerves in the course of a game. I have no problem with him working for the Zags, I just have a problem listening to him work for the Zags…

Re:Craig Ehlo, Coug

I think the main problem most people have is that when he does do a coug game, he tries to overcompensate his allegiance to the cougs, and indirectly creates a bias for the opponent, which I know does not reflect his personal opinions. But still, the GU/WSU game was almost unbearable the way he started referring to “we” as Gonzaga and not WSU.

I know Spokane is where he makes his home, and where he made it even before Gonzaga came calling

But it seems like he just completely lost touch with WSU. All last year and at the beginning of this year, the only WSU guy he really spoke with any authority on was Casto … a Spokane kid.

I listened to him on the radio with Kevin Calabro at the beginning of the season, and he talked for 10 minutes about Gonzaga, waxing poetic; when asked about WSU, he gave about a 60 second response, and just cursory stuff that anyone would know. That’s not him trying to be balanced; that’s just him not knowing much about the Cougs. You would think that one of the program’s all-time greats would remain reasonably abreast of the program, something it doesn’t seem like he’s done.

I also would take exception with your assessment of him as an analyst, but to each his own.

I’m not hating on the guy. I’m sure he’s a great dude. But from a Cougar perpsective, I just feel like he has very little connection to WSU. Maybe that’s his fault. Maybe that’s the university’s fault. I don’t know — but whatever it is, it sure doesn’t feel like he’s one of us anymore. And for a fan base that takes immense pride in being “one of us,” that’s kind of a cardinal sin.

Austin Ehlo to Walk-on

6’4" 190 lbs WR … Runs a 4.7 40… could bulk up and play TE?

by Roy Weaver Stuckey on Feb 3, 2010 1:05 PM PST reply actions

That'd be a lot of bulk to add

Too slow for a WR, too small for TE. Not sure what they’d do with him. He needs another 50 pounds to be a TE

...

Yeah I guess I wasn’t really thinking about the weight part. He’ll probably end up being a special teams guy.

From a GU fan...

Take Ehlo. Please. You will be doing Gonzaga fans a favor.

Everyone lay off Craig

I know him pretty well and he is a great Cougar. He has a job and in that job he is supposed to be as neutral as possible. He has admitted to me that sometimes he tries so hard to be neutral that he at times sounds anti-WSU but that has nothing to do with how much of a Coug he is. He often times wears a WSU shirt underneath his suit and is always rooting for WSU in his heart.

It's a tough

I think you hit the nail on the head. He’s just trying to do his job. Maybe we all shouldn’t be so sensitive.

Ehlo was my favorite player on that Raveling team. Well, Williams was up there as well but I loved the way Ehlo played the game. One of the best JC players we have had at WSU in hoops. Pretty close between Ehlo and Terrence Lewis.

Anyway, Ehlo is a Coug!

I've gotta post this

And not just to show the difference between Keith Jackson and Ehlo, but to remind you all of one better times, and to show you the BEST intro to WSU and the Palouse I’ve hear.

Sit back, watch, and enjoy this old favorite clip
