Floyd releases statement; Moos to campus Wednesday
EDIT NUSS: Bumped for relevance. Enjoy.
I received an email today from President Floyd's office. Mostly the same statement we've seen so far (Cougar Athletics will keep moving forward, Anne McCoy will be interim AD). However, it ended with this:
In recent days I have received a number of messages from Cougar supporters indicating an interest in Bill Moos as a candidate for the athletic director position. In light of that sentiment, I have invited him to visit the Pullman campus on Wednesday, February 17. Bill is well known within the Cougar family and in athletic circles across the country. He will meet with the senior leadership of the athletic department Wednesday morning. He will then hold a series of meetings with coaches and athletic staff throughout the day and take part in a public forum with members of the university community from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in Room T101 of the Food Sciences and Human Nutrition Building on the Pullman campus.
I believe it is important to bring Bill to campus to allow him to meet with members of the campus community to determine the mutual level of interest going forward.
I think that shows how interested Floyd is in getting Moos, and that WSU really wants him to be the next AD. Hopefully Moos returns that sentiment.

Id expect an offer
If it hasn’t happened already. Publicly acknowledging Moos right away shows that’s what we want and it seems like a sure thing. You just don’t put it out there unless you know for risk of being burned usually

His change in direction...
From forming a search committee to we want Moos seems to show the donors were in his ear. They know Moos’ interest already Id bet, as he’s been very close to the program lately
by Brian Floyd on Feb 15, 2010 6:28 PM PST via mobile up reply actions
Sure has that feel
Especially with Floyd almost outright saying they want him.

Well, how about announcing a public forum?
Where everyone can go say, “PLEASE BILL! PLEASE! WE LOVE YOU!” That’s the hard sell right there.
If I were in Pullman Id be there
And would use that tactic. Zzu cru….assemble!

is it a public forum?
the way i read it, “university community” refers to employees, etc.
i’m probably wrong
Public forum seems to imply anyone can show
Probably wouldn’t announce it to all unless all were invited. Seems like a cool idea

Its a new room in the new building so I dont know size
But I do know its a wired up room. It would be cool if they streamed this online

Wish I could go
but I have a bit of a logistics problem. If I was in the Palouse I would organize everyone I could to be there. If you can’t get in, then camp out outside with your Coug gear on. Maybe, start a Moos chant. (“The crowd isn’t booing they are saying Mooooo,” says the announcer) Isn’t there a leader of the ZZU CRU who could orchestrate this?

I'd expect they'd wait at least a week before naming a replacement.
Otherwise, it looks like they were SO excited Sterk left that they just couldn’t contain themselves.
His forte is fundraising. Particularly identifying and cultivating big players. I don’t know that he can do that for WSU (Allen, Schweitzer), but that’s what he’s done in the past, and if he can, it could be a real game changer for the Cougs. Oddly enough, it’s easier to get money from people when there’s a bunch of money coming in, than when there’s not much money and you really need it.
PDX News
Portland’s Channel 8 News just reported Bill’s visit to Pullman on Wednesday. They called him the front runner for the AD job and mentioned a $1.4 million buy out. YES! We need Moos!
Ill see you PDX news
And raise you Jason Gesser reporting he expects it to happen on king5 news

Well if Gesser says it...

Gesser has said a lot of things on TV
Only about a third of which have made sense. I hope he’s right on this one.

Grippi coming through in the clutch
http://www.spokesman.com/blogs/sportslink/2010/feb/15/moos-will-visit-wsu/#more
I don’t wanna attempt html from my phone but he says the buyout may not be an issue and donors are willing to step up for it. I didn’t think there was any buyout with it.

non-compete
Is Moos really going to give up $1.4m from Oregon to sit on his duff? How much could WSU pay him?
Maybe he wants to work
He’s been freelancing and doing smaller things in the department so maybe he’s bored.
WSU seems to be willing to open the wallet expecting him to be able to bring in big money as the AD. He would pay for himself in my optimistic opinion
by Brian Floyd on Feb 15, 2010 7:09 PM PST via mobile up reply actions
It is $1.4 million over 7 years. You simply have to replace the $200k a year
maybe with some incentive rewards. Honestly, I can see a base salary of $300-350k for a 7 year guaranteed contract which is very rare in the AD world. So he is essentially working for $100-150k a year, with some contract clauses that kick him more money for reaching certain donation goals, it would be win win all around.

From the Grippi article above
It seems we have some big donors willing to supplement that 200k, making it easier on WSU to pay up. This is good news if only that it may show he’s the man that can energize the base
Good point
I don’t think there is anything we need more than to energize the Alumni and more importantly the major donor base.
Does anyone else find it odd
that he will be meeting with coaches and other staff? I mean, if he was being brought in as a normal candidate would that be a normal procedure? I would have guessed he would meet with top university people and other top athletic department people. Meeting with coaches and doing a public forum seems like a big step. I suspect WSU is serious about getting him quickly.
This is definitely a wine and dine recruiting trip
It’s not an interview at all, it appears, and is more a courtship
It's not like the parties don't know each other
I think it’s pretty obvious this is for Moos to be able to evaluate the situation and see if this is what he wants to do. After all, as everyone has already pointed out, his current contract with Oregon affords him the luxury of picking his spot. He knows this will be his last job. If he’s going to forfeit that money, it better be for a winner of a job.
It can also be a fundraising moment at the same time

Wish I could go...
But I have Manufacturing Lab from 3 to 6 on Wednesdays… oh well, I’ll have to see if any friends of mine can go and tell me about it.
I’m glad Sterk finally moved on, he never really seemed to have a flare for energizing the fan base about his big projects. In particular, I feel like we need to capitalize on the bad PR the Huskies are generating by trying to get tax payer money to pay for their club seating, (i.e. “WSU, 12th man-built, not government built”). Fund-rasing is like politics; sometimes, you have to play a little dirty to get the common peoples support. I’d love to see a clever attack ad that generated more break room conversations about the stadium renovation project. Lunchons and fancy dinners are important to keep the well-to-do cougar faithful interested and informed, but I’ve always felt that if we are ever going to continuously compete against the rest of the PAC-10, we need to get our name out there to go from the whipping boy to the underdog everyone is pulling for, cough Oregon 1995 cough cough.
