Yea, by a lot of police officers...
I meant the entire shift responded, by the way

Also, dang he's old for a freshman
And I didn’t know this:
uncle Jack Thompson played at Washington State and in the NFL, while cousin Tony Thompson is a current member of the Cougar football team.

Stick a fork in him, he's done.
4th Degree assault, mandatory year of counseling, 20 or more hours community service and that’s for deferred prosecution assuming he doesn’t screw up in the year he’ll be given a clean slate.
He’s 20. He either takes this and changes or we see him off the team by next August.
i'm no lawyer
but 4th degree assault sounds like he was calling the other guy names.
Yeah, he's hardly "done"
4th degree assault is usually very minor. I highly doubt he’s off the team for this.
I'm not so sure.
It’s the lowest form of assault. Literally yelling in someone’s face can get you picked up on it. Until we know whether he’s even going to be prosecuted, it’s tough to say he’s “done.” I think Wulff’s done a good job of gathering facts and taking each situation on its own merits, and I’d imagine he’ll do the same with Jamal.
It sucks that this happened, though. The kid’s a team leader, and this is the second time he’s had a brush with the law this year.

It does suck
Hopefully he sticks around and, as Nuss points out below, he hasn’t been convicted of anything. If this is his second brush with the law, I question his leadership ability. I’m 30 years old and the only time I sat in the back seat of a police car was on a ride-along with Officer Friendly of the Seattle Police Department in an elementary school assembly. Leaders need to conduct themselves appropriately on and off the field.
I feel like Charlie Brown trying to kick the football. Ugh
As I've said before
I’ve never found it all that difficult to avoid being arrested. I wonder why our football players find it so hard.
Um, also he's been arrested
Not charged, not convicted. Geez, dude.

The main question is have is
if it is such a minor charge, why were there so many responders? The way I see it assault 4 wouldn’t take more than a couple officers to take care of. On top of that, someone went to the hospital. Im no law expert, but it seems to me like he got off kinda easy.
I'd be willing to bet good money it was a brawl
by Brian Floyd on Feb 23, 2010 10:37 AM PST up reply actions
I would agree with that
Likely it was a large fight. And the player just wasn’t smart enough to walk away and make sure he wasn’t a part of it.
4th degree
I am pretty sure my roomie when I was in school got a 4th degree when he hit a girl with a snowball during a party… ironically also on Maple St.— so I am not certain what to make of the hospital stuff and whether or not it applies to Atofau. These kids can’t seem to grasp that whatever mistake you make is headline news for the dullsville Pullman Herald. Too bad…

One more note from Grippi
• Earlier today we posted a note about Jamal Atofau, a defensive back from Bellevue. The usual response in these type of situations – Atofau, who redshirted last fall as a freshman, was arrested for fourth-degree assault early Saturday morning – is for the player to be suspended. That hasn’t happened here. Which tells me Paul Wulff and the coaches, after looking into the situation, don’t believe Atofau’s actions deserve that response. We’ll keep an eye on the situation and see if, as was the case with Brandon Jones’ first arrest, the charges are dropped.
Following up
Just as it was with the bike bicycle theft saga last spring, there is more to this tale than initially reported. Sounds like Jamal was defending his brother who had been struck in the face by some Idaho Vandal players… later on at the Hospital the trouble continued and the Vandal kid flashed gang signs… neat… Robb A has yet to comment.
