PAC-10 WEEKEND WRAP: Showdown at Haas
It's a day late and it's going to be short, but here it is anyway.
Here are the standings:
Sets up nicely for what figures to be the game of the year in the conference, when Arizona State visits Haas Pavilion on Saturday. (Assuming neither team stubs its toe on Thursday.)
Again, not a tremendous amount of change in the rankings, as things have really settled in with only two weekends to go. Just a reminder that these are power rankings, meaning that I would expect any team ranked above another to beat that team right now on a neutral floor.
1. California
Rank last week: 1
Record last week: 1-1
Overall Record: 18-9
I wonder why it is that the Bears have such a hard time with Oregon State?
2. Washington
Rank last week: 2
Record last week: 1-1
Overall Record: 18-9
WSU beat USC twice. USC beat UW twice. UW murdered WSU once. Repeat after me: "The transitive property does not apply in basketball ..."
3. Arizona State
Rank last week: 3
Record last week: 1-0
Overall Record: 19-8
Half a game out with just four games to play, including one against the team you're trailing? The Sun Devils have the opportunity in front of them.
4. USC
Rank last week: 4
Record last week: 1-1
Overall Record: 16-10
Repeat after me: "The transitive property does not apply in basketball ..."
5. Arizona
Rank last week: 5
Record last week: 0-1
Overall Record: 13-13
Rough stretch for the Wildcats. To think we all thought they might make a run at the conference title.
6. UCLA
Rank last week: 6
Record last week: 1-1
Overall Record: 12-14
Reeves Nelson tries to take out the floor with his forehead, gets stitches, comes back in the game ... and he needed surgery on the eye? The dude's myth grows larger by the day.
7. Oregon State
Rank last week: 7
Record last week: 1-1
Overall Record: 12-14
Repeat after me: "The transitive property does not apply in basketball ..."
8. Stanford
Rank last week: 9
Record last week: 2-0
Record: 13-14
Could Landry Fields really possibly win player of the year on a team at the bottom of the conference? He's making a strong case.
9. Washington State
Rank last week: 8
Record last week: 1-1
Overall Record: 16-11
Nice to see some fire against USC, but c'mon guys: Should it really be so hard to get up for every game?
10. Oregon
Rank last week: 10
Record last week: 0-2
Overall Record: 12-12
A word to Ernie Kent: Don't beg for you job. That's beneath you. I'm not your biggest fan, but I think you deserve better. Keep some dignity.

So is our best bet for winning the Pac 10 tournament to somehow match up with Arizona in the first game?
Assuming we win our first game against them, what would be our dream road to the auto bid? I’d say (without teams like Stanford or OSU winning their first games) I’d like to match up with Arizona in the 4-5 or 3-6 game, then with Cal in the 1-4 or 2-3 game, then ASU. I know our games against ASU were brutal, and maybe if we beat UW this weekend I’d prefer to see them in the last game, but I think ASU has more weaknesses overall that we theoretically can exploit. Anyways, just a thought.
I'd think USC would have to be in there for our "dream run."

Except they're not playing, otherwise yes.

Yeah, and thanks for that.
I have this strange habit of pointing out my mistakes to everyone.
