PP Goal!

There has been significantly less suspense this time around.

Six goals on 11 shots

As Ken Pomeroy would say, that’s pretty efficient.

Looks like you and I are the only ones who care at this point

Surprising, based of the number of people determined to spoil the Swiss game on the Moos thread … ;-)

by Jeff Nusser on Feb 26, 2010 12:40 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah that's why I set this up!

Also, it is the middle of the day.

So do I

but I didnt find the thread till now. And now I have to ditch for a biology midterm.

by Cougar999 on Feb 26, 2010 12:51 PM PST up reply actions

That was, too.

That’s OK. I’m over it now. Pummeling Finland to get to the gold medal game will do that to a person.

Fantastic job by USA

the stage is getting set for a USA-Canada rematch that should be billed as the biggest hockey game in 30 years.

by spencer peaty on Feb 26, 2010 1:01 PM PST reply actions

We had the same matchup in 2002.

Why is this one a bigger deal?

CougCenter WSU's second main blog

by Craig Powers on Feb 26, 2010 1:03 PM PST up reply actions

Because we beat canada on their home Ice

for the first time ever. They are really embarrassed after losing to a very young team and will be out for revenge. USA has only medaled once since 1980 and lost to, you said it, Canada.

It helps that both teams have been annihilating teams of late. Maybe its not the biggest since 1980 but to me would be.

by spencer peaty on Feb 26, 2010 1:09 PM PST up reply actions

Yup

There’s bad blood that’s been developing for a number of years now. It’s in Canada, and the Canadian fans hate us. The players want to desperately beat each other. This is going to be huge.

by Jeff Nusser on Feb 26, 2010 1:13 PM PST up reply actions

Fair enough.

But I heard the same exact thing eight years ago (It being the biggest game since 1980). The reasons then were that this was on our home ice, and it provided a real chance for hockey to expand to the average American sports fan. Could this possibly be the biggest hockey game in eight years?

Biggest international game

And this is bigger than that, I would say. The U.S. team is young — a win in the gold medal game would be a huge statement. That 2002 team was old, hanging on for one more run.

I don’t totally buy into the whole “expand to the average American sports fan” stuff, and don’t think this game will be significant on that front. Hockey is a niche sport, and I think it always will be in the U.S.

by Jeff Nusser on Feb 26, 2010 1:25 PM PST up reply actions

They really are

The forecheck is looking good, we’re still blocking tons of shots, Miller still looks good, and they’re winning face-offs and loose pucks like no other

by Brian Floyd on Feb 26, 2010 1:28 PM PST up reply actions

How about Ryan Miller

His save percentage in the Olympics is .950. The leader in the NHL this year is .931. And Miller is facing the best players in the world every game.

by spencer peaty on Feb 26, 2010 1:30 PM PST reply actions

Not to downplay Miller because he's been amazing

But damn our ENTIRE team has been jumping in front of pucks with reckless abandon. They’ve been blocking shots like it’s going out of style and it’s fun to see

by Brian Floyd on Feb 26, 2010 1:31 PM PST up reply actions

I know.

But I’m argumentative today and small sample size is an easy one.

No doubt

But its kinda like someone hitting 20 points better in the World series than the regular season league leader. Except in a much more impactful position.

by spencer peaty on Feb 26, 2010 1:34 PM PST up reply actions

More like what a hot starting pitcher can do.

Except, it would be like Josh Beckett pitching every game of the 2003 World Series for the Marlins.

by Jeff Nusser on Feb 26, 2010 1:37 PM PST up reply actions

I had every intention of making the Predators my NHL team when I moved to Nashville.

Then I learned they are rarely on television and the tickets cost too much. It’s really hard to get behind a team I never see in person. I try to care, but I just can’t.

We're stuck in no mans land

Closest in Vancouver and I can’t get behind a team across the border

by Brian Floyd on Feb 26, 2010 1:48 PM PST up reply actions

So, those shots are coming at what 100+ mph for some?

How much balls does it take to dive in front of them. Pads or not that hurts

by Brian Floyd on Feb 26, 2010 1:50 PM PST reply actions

I still can't believe they used to play without helmets or visors

Other than the skate to the throat injuries, the worst ones I’ve seen are the slapshots to the face

by Brian Floyd on Feb 26, 2010 1:54 PM PST up reply actions

Yep

There was also one where a skate came up high and caught someone standing.

That goalie was lucky to be alive

by Brian Floyd on Feb 26, 2010 1:57 PM PST up reply actions

Announcer jinx

And for once another announcer called him out for it

by Brian Floyd on Feb 26, 2010 1:58 PM PST reply actions

New goalie?

Miller deserves a rest. And there’s a puck to the head, ouch

by Brian Floyd on Feb 26, 2010 1:59 PM PST reply actions

Maybe

It’d probably be an easier game for us, but I’d love to see a USA-Canada final. The atmosphere would be insane

by Brian Floyd on Feb 26, 2010 2:03 PM PST up reply actions

The first game was amazing

Fun as heck to watch. I’d expect Canada to bring it even more in the gold medal game

by Brian Floyd on Feb 26, 2010 2:06 PM PST up reply actions

Yep

While it was nice whipping them in round robin play, the gold medal game is a whole different beast. Especially on home ice

by Brian Floyd on Feb 26, 2010 2:10 PM PST up reply actions

I dont know

Canada’s gonna have something to prove.

Fresh and rested going in to the gold medal game

Got to coast to the win. Hopefully Slovakia brings it and makes Canada work

by Brian Floyd on Feb 26, 2010 2:13 PM PST reply actions

Slovaks playing terrible

Here comes that canada usa final

by Brian Floyd on Feb 26, 2010 7:10 PM PST via mobile reply actions

I would posit that last night had a lot less to do with Slovakia

And a lot more to do with Canada. We’ve got our work cut out for us.

by Jeff Nusser on Feb 27, 2010 6:45 PM PST up reply actions

I missed the fast and furious ending to it all where Slovakia almost came back

But from the rest of the game, Canada looked real good. They’re coming for blood today, too.
