Keys to a Cougar Victory

As Nuss pointed it out in the podcast this team was able to limit turnovers and get to the free throw line against the Huskies in Seattle.  That of course could do little to prevent an abysmal offensive performance.  My keys to the game tonight?

1) Shoot well

2) Shoot well

3) Shoot well

(That's quality analysis you can only find  here)

The Cougs couldn't buy a bucket last time out and that led to a lot of transition opportunities for the Huskies. Also, let's play some more man-to-man please!  Boo zone.  We have to some good on-ball defenders, let's see what they can do.

This game is billed as a sellout.  It's Nik night.  Oregon just swept the LA schools.

Let's get a freaking win.

I was going to write a post about this yesterday, but ran out of time

A huge key to me is figuring out a way to get in the lane. If you can get past the Huskies’ ball pressure on the perimeter — something we didn’t do at all in the first matchup — their interior defense is not very good. Isaiah Thomas and Venoy Overton were masterful on Klay and Reggie in the first matchup. We’ve got to do a better job against them. Passing the ball would be a good start.

by Jeff Nusser on Feb 27, 2010 6:50 PM PST reply actions

"Right now, Arizona State and Cal are in for sure"

He’s talking about the NCAA tournament. The lesson, of course, is NEVER TALK ABOUT THINGS YOU KNOW ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ABOUT.

The video stream post above is on FSN Arizona

Which according to my schedule is USC vs Oregon State. Does anyone have another video stream link?

by apearlman on Feb 27, 2010 7:00 PM PST reply actions

Boy, that's a great start

Klay turns the ball over, and Kop picks up an immediate foul. Nice.

by Jeff Nusser on Feb 27, 2010 7:08 PM PST reply actions

I think the Cougs are going to make a comeback and win this game.

It is coming too easy for the uw and WSU has many shots that are rimming out. The tide will turn. Just watch.

Game over, we lost

these FSN guys suck, they love UW to much, but we lost this game already, see you all next year.

by ajs8026 on Feb 27, 2010 7:15 PM PST reply actions

This is exactly what I'm talking about

When I say refs come into Pullman timid and give the road team the benefit of the doubt. No, it’s not blatant, but we need FTs to win this game. 2 drawn fouls in 9 min won’t help

by Grady Clapp on Feb 27, 2010 7:25 PM PST via mobile reply actions

When WSU protested the CALL against Oregon

and the Pac 10 backed up the refs. I thought some refs would consciously and other refs unconsciously go against the Cougars all year.

by Coug1990 on Feb 27, 2010 7:28 PM PST up reply actions

I personally think there should be a moratorium against railing against the announcers

I use my complaining against a game not being televised than having a game televised with a bad announcer. They all say stupid things. Get over it (and I mean this in a nice way).

When watching a game like this...

We have to have fun some how… And Lenny gives us plenty to work with.

I really hate you Lenny.

by GoCougs on Feb 27, 2010 7:27 PM PST reply actions

That last shot was tough

He’s had some shots that are a little out of control. That will be to our benefit at some point.

I’m just incredibly worried about our offense. We look completely lost out there.

by Jeff Nusser on Feb 27, 2010 7:33 PM PST up reply actions

I think I see what Bone is trying to run.

But they don’t understand how to execute it yet.

Now, I’m one of the bigger Bone-bashers on here, butin his defence he’s trying to run a motion offence, and that’s a really hard thing for a young team to learn. I’m not a motion O guy AT ALL, but it’s a teaching offence and it takes a long time to learn to make reads and execute off the screens. And what you get when the screens don’t work is a whole lot of guys trying to force things off the dribble and shoot on one pass.

Hopefully all the returnees next year will have a much better idea how to execute. I guess.

by Coug Friendly Canuck on Feb 27, 2010 7:37 PM PST up reply actions

I can see the similarities...

… but I think Bone is trying to do some things that are more sophisticated.

At least I hope so, since the whole point of Mover/Blocker was to be easy to teach in a limited amount of practice time.

by Coug Friendly Canuck on Feb 27, 2010 7:45 PM PST up reply actions

Technically, I should be rooting against you guys

since all I really want is for Cal to avoid Oregon State in the tournament, which means keeping the Beavers out of the 8-9 game, but in my heart, I’m pulling for the Cougs. Now if only my cable package was airing this game. Good luck!

So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!

We need to get under control on offense

Shots are a lot easier to make when you actually have your feet under you. It’s insane to me how much we’re killing the offensive glass and we’re not scoring points.

by Jeff Nusser on Feb 27, 2010 7:43 PM PST reply actions

The uw is doing a lot of clutching and grabbing

Plus they are knocking WSU around on the dribble and it all is taking WSU out of their rhythm.

by displacedcoug on Feb 27, 2010 7:57 PM PST reply actions

Klay has gone a game

and a half w/o a field goal. whoda thunk it?!!!

I predict a Coug victory. I have a weird feeling. Amaning was out of his A**— but has three fouls and will return to reality and play careful. Klay will make a three pointer this half- and Reggie will get it going.

so there it is- Cougs will win. I am calling it. I never do. Look it up.

If you can't Go Cougs... don't go.

by hollyweirdcoug on Feb 27, 2010 7:59 PM PST reply actions

Check that. 102.3

Still, they’re not doing anything special. You can blame our 61.0 OE and 21.2 eFG.

If you want to be depressed, however, Washington has a 35 TO%. That won’t continue. Ours is 26. Good chance that does.

We are currently winning both offensive rebounding and defensive rebounding percentages.

by Jeff Nusser on Feb 27, 2010 8:51 PM PST reply actions

That was such a great foul call

Thomas jumps into Casto, shoves him with his off arm, and Casto gets the foul.

Refs weren't great.

But the Cougs have no business complaining about the refs when they just handed away breakaway layups in the 1st half. Take care of that and they win.

Breakaway layup of a missed free throw? Inexcusable. And a damn shame, because they played very good D in that game other than that.

Bummer! They played hard, but not smart. DeAngelo was huge. Klay needs the season to end so the poor guy can get his confidence back. Reggie needs to dribble just a little bit more…NOT. Lastly, the Husky players are by and large all right, but Overton is a thug and Thomas is a punk. Did I mention that Thomas is a punk?
