More good news about football
Brandon Jones gets a DUI this last weekend and is now off the team. This is his second arrest (Assault 4 DV a few months back) and apparently this was the last straw.
A lot of words come to mind right now and none of them are good.
EDIT NUSS: That 4th degree assault arrest was never confirmed by anyone in the mainstream media, although you can read the details of the apparent arrest here.
EDIT NUSS AGAIN: Grippi confirms the domestic violence arrest, but says no charges were ever filed.

He was on his way out already
A month or two ago I dont remember where I heard he was leaving but I checked out his MS page and it said something to the effect of “get me the hell out of Pullman”… so yeah, he wasnt going to back reguardless.

That could have been around Winter Break?
I didn’t think he played particularly great last year, but I think it still hurts that he’s leaving. With all the kids coming off of redshirts, he may have been passed on the depth chart anyways, but still would have liked to have him around. Ah, well. Good luck to him wherever he lands.

Is a lower level. He’s in his last year of eligibility

I will not miss him
I didn’t think he was that good. He brought some athleticism but I wasn’t impressed with his coverage abilities. I’m looking forward to seeing all the young guys out there, Simmons and Washington in particular.

He was toast from day 1
Sure the d-line shares a lot of the blame but he seemed to fall behind Simmons before he broke his leg and Hayward and even Justin did not seem too far behind. Justin really started to improve his play toward the end of last season.
I would have liked to have his leadership around but maybe that wasn’t going to happen in any event. I am fine with going with the younger players. We are pretty deep at the position with Simmons, Hayward, Justin, Washington, and Carpenter and corner is a position you can have success at a relatively young age. Some of the incoming kids could figure in as well.
I am still holding out hope we see Monty suit up again. He is a great leader from all accounts.

It still hurts
As we’ve seen we need depth everywhere. Maybe its me expecting injuries but I feel like we need the backups with the injuries that keep coming

Expect injuries
Simmons and Daniels pretty much says it all. I never have heard of 2 kids breaking their leg in one season. Unless there are academic or transfer issues with Simmons, Heyward, and Washington I really think the position is in good shape. Carpenter is a corner at this point although coming out of high school some thought he would end up at free safety. Add Justin and that’s 5 kids at corner and probably as much talent as we have seen at corner at one time that I can remember.
They still have to prove it but I bet Ball still feels good about the position even given all the bad luck we have seen over the last 2 years. There are at least a couple corners in the ’010 class as well.
Obviously, this kind of thing cannot spill much further so hopefully this is it with the losses but as we know we probably will see at least a few more.

Agreed
I like the depth we have at corner, even though its extremely young. Jones was going to be a SR and I would put him 4th or 5th on the depth charts. This way we can get more young guys some action, and this group IMO has the most potential on the entire roster.

Update from the original story
Pullman police arrested Jones last Nov. 30 in a domestic dispute. No charges were filed and the case was dropped in December, according to the Whitman County prosecutor’s office.

Is this going to hurt us?
When a player leaves the program, gets kicked off or gets bad grades doesn’t that hurt us. I know we have sanctions on us right now for this reason. I forget the rule or whatever it is. You guys know what I am talking about. This came up a few months back and Wulff/Sterk is working on getting this straightened out (from the Doba/Price eras). Doesn’t the NCAA look at the 5 year average. I hope this doesn’t hurt us, because I think we are already missing a few scholarships because of things like this. Could someone refresh my memory?

APR (Academic Progress Rate)
Yes, it does. If I remember right, we took the hit in 2008 and 2009, but we’re kosher as of this year. So we’re eligible for the full 85 scholarships. If Jones enrolls and graduates elsewhere, it’s less of a hit than if he just flunks out.
They look at it over a 5 year period, and do a point system of some kind, but as with everything in the NCAA, there are all kinds of loopholes and/or appeals. I don’t think it’ll be a major issue for us, but I could be wrong.

It's a negligible hit if Jones is on track to graduate
Where we got killed under Doba was guys leaving without making adequate progress toward graduation while at WSU. The NCAA penalizes you heavily for that. HEAVILY.

Ehh either way id rather have these criminals off of the team
No room for troublemakers when your trying to change the perverbial language of the program.

Sigh ...
Let’s be clear: He’s not a criminal. Not yet, anyway, as he was arrested on charges that were eventually dropped and has now been arrested but not convicted.
I understand the sentiment, but let’s try to be a tad less inflammatory.

The thing of it is....
He was that awful, and still wasn’t getting beat out by any of the other (non-RS) players last year….
