Defensive lineman Toby Turpin, suspended for the final two games of last season for an undisclosed violation of team rules, is dealing with an unrelated but undisclosed academic issue that could cost him his senior year. A source who isn’t authorized to speak on the record concerning academics, confirmed Turpin is embroiled in an academic dispute and is in the middle of the school’s appeal process, so it’s still not know whether he’ll be available in spring or fall.

The school won’t comment on Turpin’s situation other than to say he’s still a member of the football team. Turpin’s presence in the middle of the defense is, at his best, disruptive to the opposition. And with the Cougars not having a ton of depth on the d-line – and yes, we meant that literally – his absence would be felt.

Needed Mahoney or Goggins

They also offered a couple other d-tackles that went another direction.

They really needed to pick up a jc player that could come in and start but to lose a returning player hurts.

Wolfgramm has a bad back, Luapo has a bad knee, and now Turpin has grade issues.

Spitz and Laurenzie really have to step up as redshirt soph’s and probably Clayton and Robinson as redshirt frosh. Yikes!

It could be worse

We could have Oregon’s problems.

I'm speechless

The ridiculousness of that caper almost rivals Ellis T Jones, himself

by Brian Floyd on Mar 1, 2010 12:55 PM PST up reply actions

Not even close, actually.

Starks had a gun, which is worse than a taser, I guess, but otherwise, one armed robbery and assault is nowhere near a three day binge of assault, robbery and kidnapping.

On just a point basis, I’m guessing it’s 7 points (assault with a deadly weapon, robbery 4 and 3 points respectively) versus 31 (!!!) for Jones.

Initial guesses are 12 points before bonuses

Armed robbery, kidnapping (tied him up), assault with a deadly weapon, and burglary charges. Add in bonusesfor it being a team building exercise (a former player was involved), and the stupidity of it being his own coach.

Ellis T Jones, however, is and always will be in his own league.

Yeah, should have looked at the story again.

But still. Nearly triple the score. At least double, even with the bonuses.

what does "embroiled in an academic dispute" imply

For the life of me, I can’t decide if that means flunking or if it means cheating.

by BigWood on Mar 1, 2010 3:15 PM PST via mobile reply actions

Flunking wouldn't get you kicked out of school.

Unless you were already on probation for substandard GPA, in which case, he wouldn’t have been eligible for football in the fall.

The first thing I thought of when I read that was cheating, but it’s such an inflammatory accusation, I didn’t want to start any rumors.

by "in the fall"

I mean last fall.

If he’s failing during last spring or the summer, he can’t play the 2009 season, if he flunks again in fall of 2009, he’d be kicked out for Spring of 2010.

If he’d just been failing during the 09 season, he’d be suspended from spring ball, but they wouldn’t be trying to kick him out of school.

Could also be some kind of credit issue

But yes a flunking issue would’ve came out at semester and the appeals process doesn’t take this long. Seems like something weird going on
