AUDIO: Ken Bone press conference, season ender

Ken Bone met with the media for one final teleconference before calling it a season. I haven't listened to it yet, so I can't tell you what he talks about. My guess would be the decision to not pursue postseason basketball is in there somewhere ...

EDIT: It starts with the postseason question, so that's good. Also, it gets into the realm of who might not be on this team next year, but Bone has no answers yet. He anticipates guy(s) leaving, but nobody has told him they're leaving. So, that means no rosterbation from all of you. This is a no speculation thread. Banninations will ensue. You've been warned.

As usual, you can listen to the audio via the player below, or visit our podcast page for myriad ways to subscribe to all of our audio, including our original weekly podcast program. Besides having the audio directly delivered to your player of choice, I often upload the audio to the podcast site before posting it here.

A reason for hope?

I thought we voted for option 2

Baninnation!

And he’s right about the postseason, too. When Arizona, UCLA, etc. all say no to other tournaments it says something. Going on the road AGAIN probably isn’t worth it. The analogy made in the other thread about the definition of insanity seems to fit what he’s saying too.

A few other things

He seems to shoot down the player vote theory.
He openly talks about the discussions with players in the offseason about PT and how the coach and player see things differently (I find it interesting because that’s mostly a behind closed doors deal usually).

the CBI is beneath Arizona and UCLA

it’s not beneath us. especially when we have the youngest team in the country.

i still think it was a bad move to not pursue another game and another week of practice.

by BigWood on Mar 15, 2010 8:04 PM PDT up reply actions

It wasnt just the beneath us argumentt

That wasn’t really much of it. I can see both sides of it. On one side, do we want another two days (games start tomorrow I think) of practice to go back on the road again? If we lose again, what does it do to the team?

I’m not sure which id rather see. The team getting another few days of work and maybe a run in the CBI or a potentially devestating loss on the road

by Brian Floyd on Mar 15, 2010 8:07 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

who cares what it does to the team?

its a freaking exhibition. we get to keep practicing….

by BigWood on Mar 15, 2010 8:24 PM PDT up reply actions

Then why risk injury and a mental explosion for it?

Wed be guaranteed maybe 2 days more of practice, more if we advance. I don’t know if its worth it to play in a glorified preseason tournament that our team (maybe) and staff don’t really want to play in.

by Brian Floyd on Mar 15, 2010 8:29 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

I'd agree with BigWood.

The way I see it, having a young team they can use every piece of in game experience that they can get. If you look at a guy like Motum who had his best game of the year in the very last game, where is he supposed to go with that momentum. Especially if they were able to win a few games, any tournament would be a huge confidence builder. We have an athletic program similar to OSU, and the CBI obviously isn’t below them so I don’t know why it should be below us.

by Cougar999 on Mar 15, 2010 9:59 PM PDT up reply actions

The sticking point isn't it being beneath us

It’s is it even worth it? Will this extra amount of practices (as little as one or two, as much as a week or two) be worth it?

Look at OSU last year. A team made up of Sophomores and Juniors who had a not so great regular season and then won the CBI. If they had come out and set the world on fire this year, I could argue the tournament had a tangible effect. Instead, they lost to TA&MCC, Sac St, and Illinois Chicago early on and finished with almost the exact same record as last year.

At this point would practices help? Couple that with June’s comments about young kids, especially freshmen, hitting a mental wall, or breaking point, while adjusting to the college game. There’s a lot more of a time commitment then they are used to from before this. What you probably saw towards the end of the year was probably part of this. Why not give them a week off and have them hit the gym with the strength and conditioning coach? Right now, guys like Motum, Bjornstad, and more could probably use that more. If they hadn’t gotten the system by this point, another week isn’t going to make things click. Any Motumentum built in the CBI would long be gone by November either way.

For illustration purposes, and not a comparison at all, our 2006 team had no post season and a similar makeup. They did just fine the next year.

I'm not saying that it would necessarily help

but I have a hard time believing that it would hurt.

my guess...

I think that “Go-For-Pizza” guy leaves the team.

Oh, whoops, just read the no-speculation-rule!

From the interview on Cougfan its clear Bone has no intention of moving kids out

``“To me it was obvious that maybe this was one step too high,” said Bone, adding that he prefers players to determine that. “Sometimes that conversation needs to take place because kids don’t see it the same way you do.”

Bone said no one currently in the program fits that description, and he would prefer that everyone returns.’’

So can we drop the Brown and others are gone theories?

by CougM.E.93 on Mar 15, 2010 6:21 PM PDT reply actions

Two things

One, nobody here is floating the Brown and others theories because we’re not going to speculate on roster moves. And, two, BONE HIMSELF said in the audio above that he expects that one or more guys will probably move on.

Perhaps you should actually listen to the audio before commenting on the thread.

KJR with Bone

Bone talked about possible moves on KJR too. I could see 2-3 going. That frees up one space for the JC stud and one for a big man from God knows where. The other could be saved for next year where we wouldn’t have any scholarships available, that’s scary. There are obvious kids who aren’t Pac-10 ready and that don’t fit Bone’s style. It’s his team and he needs to keep only those players that fit the system and who WANT to be there. They have their work cut out for them with the goal of going dancing if not next year, the following year. I need to dance with them since there won’t be a bowl game anytime soon. The team needs to get mentally ready and physically ready. Each player needs to find their role and trust the system. I’m confident Bone will lead us dancing and keep us dancing more often than not in the near future.

The most interesting part ot me

Is that he reiterated a couple of times that there were guys who were set to leave at the end of last year and only stuck around because a new coach was coming in. Perhaps that played a role in Tony leaving, too.

by Jeff Nusser on Mar 16, 2010 6:23 AM PDT reply actions

I thought it was interesting

What I wonder is if that kind of statement reinforces the idea that talented players don’t like playing in Bennett’s system, or if these were just fringe guys that wanted a shot with a new coach. It’s an interesting statement that he kept coming back to.

I’d have also almost rather taken the hit of losing a couple guys at the end of last year (depending who they were) in order to have some class balance, then to have the issue with balance we have now.

by Brian Floyd on Mar 16, 2010 11:39 AM PDT up reply actions

By a year, at least

And at this point, it’s too late for him to do much with the scholarships freed due to attrition anyway.

At least if it happened last year he could target guys for the early period in this class. Now, any attrition would probably mean sitting on scholarships until next years class, which isn’t a bad idea but sets him back nonetheless.
