NCAA TOURNAMENT OPEN THREAD: Session 1

First things first. Read Cougfan's day one preview. I've decided to do threads session by session, since we should (hopefully) have a billion comments.

If you want to watch the games on CBS March Madness On Demand, click here.

Next Game

(10) Florida Gators
@ (7) BYU Cougars

Thursday, Mar 18, 2010, 9:20 AM PDT
NCAA Tournament - West Region - First Round - Ford Center - Oklahoma City, OK
Vegas: BYU (-5)
Kenpom: BYU 78-71

BYU is #8 in the Kenpom rankings, but comes in as a #7 seed.

Next Game

(11) Old Dominion Monarchs
@ (6) Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Thursday, Mar 18, 2010, 9:25 AM PDT
NCAA Tournament - South Region - First Round - New Orleans Arena - New Orleans, LA
Vegas: ND (-2)
Kenpom: ODU 65-64

Every time I see Luke Harangody, I remember how overhyped he was prior to the Cougs' tourney matchup with ND. And I smile.

Next Game

(15) Robert Morris Colonials
@ (2) Villanova Wildcats

Thursday, Mar 18, 2010, 9:30 AM PDT
NCAA Tournament - South Region - First Round - Dunkin Donuts Center - Providence, RI
Vegas: Nova (-18.5)
Kenpom: Nova 86-67

Scottie Reynolds will not start, but he'll still play. So don't worry about an early bracket buster. Maybe he just missed the bus?

UW Law School hates the tournament

This, though, was an awesome attempt at getting a final moved.

Whitewash on the floor for BYU

sorry.. couldn’t resist the opportunity to point that out

by Grady Clapp on Mar 18, 2010 9:26 AM PDT reply actions

ND/ODU is the CBS game in Pullman

That’s… odd…. Buying MMOD pays of since I’d much rather watch BYU/Fla

Dammit Mr. Bean.

Trim your eyebrows, they can see them in the third deck.

Seriously, why?

If we see Mike Littlewood in one of the later games I’m going to set stuff on fire.

by Grady Clapp on Mar 18, 2010 9:34 AM PDT up reply actions

Anyone else hate the fact they made all the floors look alike?

Protecting the NCAA brand > all else

Although I do like the fact they remove all sponsorships from the floor/videoboard, even though the only reason they do it is so they don’t detract from their “corporate champions”.

by Grady Clapp on Mar 18, 2010 9:31 AM PDT reply actions

Wait, I thought the NCAA was all about the "student-athlete"?

I agree, I always liked seeing the different floors from the different arenas…now it’s like watching the BCS bowl games – they all use the same graphics and style.

It's obnoxious

The worst is that you’re never sure what site you’re watching when they change games. They always have to tell you.

by Jeff Nusser on Mar 18, 2010 9:35 AM PDT up reply actions

Except for New Orleans this year

They’re playing in an empty arena it appears.

by Brian Floyd on Mar 18, 2010 9:36 AM PDT up reply actions

For always being sold out.

The first round games are surprisingly empty quite often. I don’t think the arena was ever full when I was in Sacramento.

I wouldn't be upset if Old Dominion would like to score some points.

I feel like I’m watching the Cougs from five years ago.

Here's a fun trick

If you can anticipate the commercial break, you can switch games on MMOD without having to see the commercials.

by Brian Floyd on Mar 18, 2010 9:46 AM PDT reply actions

Good heavens

New Orleans looks like it is hosting the Pac-10 tournament… empty seats everywhere

by Grady Clapp on Mar 18, 2010 9:46 AM PDT reply actions

They like to arrive fashionably late in the Big Easy.

You know what I can't believe?

That the pathetic bandwidth at my school is supporting the player right now.

It's more then awesome

I just wish I would’ve had a Cowgill shirt!

by Brian Floyd on Mar 18, 2010 9:57 AM PDT up reply actions

YES

There’s still time … and it would be made more awesome by the fact that only some of us would get it.

I also think a Caleb Forrest shirt would’ve been awesome.

by Jeff Nusser on Mar 18, 2010 9:58 AM PDT up reply actions

Other things I wonder

If they force you to watch the commercials, why the heck doesn’t CBS just stream all their games? What is the downside?

by Jeff Nusser on Mar 18, 2010 9:56 AM PDT reply actions

nice adjustments by BYU

they were getting out quicked- spread the floor and created lanes and open jumpers have dropped

And Joe Smith steps to the free throw line … dribbles it … SIZES UP THE SHOT … HE MAKES THE FIRST SHOT!!!!

I'm being told by Big XII fans that Kansas has at least a 7/10 chance of winning the whole thing.

This is a great struggle between the world of sports statistics and the world of casual viewing: understanding probability. There is no way anyone is anywhere close to a 70% chance of winning the whole thing.

by philkid3 on Mar 18, 2010 10:46 AM PDT reply actions

in my 20 person pool

19 of them picked kansas. the last guy picked gonzaga, so i’m not sure he counts.

by BigWood on Mar 18, 2010 10:49 AM PDT up reply actions

Right, and I pointed out that number.

And the response was:

I don’t think that’s what Pomeroy is doing with that percentage.

The 23% is a function of predicting each game in an individual tourney, not necessarily the entire tourney itself.

If you played the tourney 10 times, I bet Kansas would win 7 of those times.

by philkid3 on Mar 18, 2010 10:51 AM PDT up reply actions

Yup.

But K-State should still top BYU

by Grady Clapp on Mar 18, 2010 10:55 AM PDT up reply actions

KSU-BYU was the most painful game for me to pick.

Most too-close-to-call games, I don’t have the winner going far. But I’d have BYU beating anyone they play in SLC and I’d have KSU going to at least the Elite Eight. It’s really hard to pick when a second round game has ramifications 2-3 rounds later.

I ended up picking KSU officially, but going with BYU in half of my leagues. And on the little bracket I printed and posted on the fridge just to look smart.

by philkid3 on Mar 18, 2010 10:57 AM PDT up reply actions

You should be allowed to turn down a one-and-one

Missed front ends (turnover) = 30%
Turnovers on inbounds passes = maybe 10-20% under the press?

by Grady Clapp on Mar 18, 2010 11:13 AM PDT reply actions

I like this idea

Then again, any team that had a decent inbound play could just kill the clock

i've never understood this commercial

a group of fans would rather have their team lose just so they can spend an extra ten minutes at buffalo wild wings?

the t-shirt cannon to the balls was a good touch though

by BigWood on Mar 18, 2010 12:15 PM PDT reply actions   1 recs

Makes no sense. Also, does Buffalo Wild Wings think their restaurant is only good while there is a game on?

If buffalo wild wings has the power to alter outcomes

THAT should be the advertisement.

“Buffalo Wild Wings: If enough of you show up, your team will win. Promise”

by BigWood on Mar 18, 2010 12:18 PM PDT up reply actions

That's absurd.

Buffalo Wild Wings is awesome all the time.

Side Story: the breakout Coug year in 2006, I was in Orlando the day they almost beat UCLA. My dad texted me the Cougs were winning as my g/f and I drove up to B-Dubs, and there, in all its glory, was the game on TV.

Even though we lost, the serendipity of it all, and the moment I truly believed in that season, is one of the most memorable moments of my life as a sports fan and why I will always have fond memories of the Orlando Buffalo Wild Wings. (Since been there more than just about any restaurant location on the planet).
