NCAA TOURNAMENT OPEN THREAD: Session 3

If you want to watch the games on CBS March Madness On Demand, click here.

Next Game

(9) Northern Iowa Panthers
@ (8) UNLV Runnin Rebels

Thursday, Mar 18, 2010, 4:10 PM PDT
NCAA Tournament - Midwest Region - First Round - Ford Center - Oklahoma City, OK
Kenpom: UNI 58-57

I chose Northern Iowa to win this game because a friend of a friend went there. I dare any of the "mainstream media" sports sites to bring forth that kind of analysis.

Next Game

(16) East Tennessee St. Buccaneers
@ (1) Kentucky Wildcats

Thursday, Mar 18, 2010, 4:10 PM PDT
NCAA Tournament - East Region - First Round - New Orleans Arena - New Orleans, LA
Kenpom: Kentucky 77-60

Finally, a 1/16 game! This one may be closer than you think. And by closer, I mean less than a 20 point blowout.

Next Game

Washington Huskies
@ Marquette Golden Eagles

Thursday, Mar 18, 2010, 4:20 PM PDT
NCAA Tournament - East Region - First Round - HP Pavilion - San Jose, CA
Kenpom: MARQ 72-71

AUDIO: CougCenter Podcast, Episode 29
Four Pac-10 teams headed to the postseason

A fun dose of Husky anti-fandom.

Next Game

Ohio Bobcats
@ Georgetown Hoyas

Thursday, Mar 18, 2010, 4:25 PM PDT
NCAA Tournament - Midwest Region - First Round - Dunkin Donuts Center - Providence, RI
Kenpom: G'Town 78-66

Peter King AND Jay Mariotti went to Ohio? They must teach a lot of arrogance in their journalism program.

Me too.

I have never wanted to be wrong in my bracket so badly.

I took UNM

And had to swallow hard to pick UW in the first round

by Brian Floyd on Mar 18, 2010 4:24 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, I'm not totally sure why

I’ve been watching them all year, unfortunately having to live in this state, and they’re pretty good

by johnnycougar on Mar 18, 2010 4:29 PM PDT up reply actions

I know they are

But having so many close wins is at least partially due to luck.

by Jeff Nusser on Mar 18, 2010 4:29 PM PDT up reply actions

I hate Bavasi, despite the fact that he GM'd a team I hate.

Even if he tried to destroy the Mariners, I cannot stand a human being that stupid.

Meanwhile, I had Zdrowiernscik for the opposite reason.

Jack Z seems to be a genius to me

Carroll and Schneider, on the other hand….

by Brian Floyd on Mar 18, 2010 4:37 PM PDT up reply actions

JZ does indeed seem like a smart dude.

I think his anointment in so much of the media as one of the best out there is a bit premature, but I certainly expect it to be deserved eventually.

by philkid3 on Mar 18, 2010 4:38 PM PDT up reply actions

After the previous regime

All he had to do was demonstrate a basic knowledge to be a genius.

Then again, his only what the hell move was the Morrow deal so far out of everything.

by Brian Floyd on Mar 18, 2010 4:40 PM PDT up reply actions

It's going to happen

Aardsma isn’t recovered and League looks awesome. And by awesome I mean have you seen the new commercials?

by Brian Floyd on Mar 18, 2010 4:42 PM PDT up reply actions

Don't even get me started on that one

The first words out of Carroll’s mouth re: Whitehurst is “competition.” Essentially, he wants to run the Seahawks like USC. That’s great, except for the fact that EVERYONE’S second stringers in the NFL are significantly worse than their starters. You’re not recruiting 20 five-star recruits to your team every year. I mean, Mora kept promising changes last year. Want to know why he never made any? Because the second stringers were WAY worse than the crappy starters. It just doesn’t work this way in the NFL.

See? You got me started.

by Jeff Nusser on Mar 18, 2010 4:40 PM PDT up reply actions

Oh, I'm with you

I checked out the FieldGulls reaction thread. HO-LY CRAP.

In two days he created a mass uproar. Trading Tapp for scraps and getting FLEECED by the Chargers was the last way I wanted to start the offseason.

by Brian Floyd on Mar 18, 2010 4:42 PM PDT up reply actions

I won't argue that

It’s basically been the talk of sports radio down here the last month, that teams they should be beating by 15 will keep it close.

I guess the main thing I’ve noticed is that they (cliche alert) play to the level of their competition. I’m actually a little more worried about them losing in the first game than beating Marquette or UW.

by johnnycougar on Mar 18, 2010 4:32 PM PDT up reply actions

I'll bet they kill Montana

The Griz are a one-man who it looks to me were overseeded.

by Jeff Nusser on Mar 18, 2010 4:33 PM PDT up reply actions

My actual basketball analysis

Is that both UW and Marquette have excellent perimeter defense. Holiday can match up on Hobson.

by Jeff Nusser on Mar 18, 2010 4:36 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm curious to see the Holiday on Hayward matchup

I also want to see what Butler can do. I’m guessing QPon and Holiday trade off on these two

by Brian Floyd on Mar 18, 2010 4:38 PM PDT up reply actions

But UNM's only big weakness is something neither team can exploit

UNM can be beaten inside on the boards, and I’d give UW the edge in terms of doing that. UNM reminds me a lot of Cal, with athletic guards who get to the rim and streaky outside shooting. UNM also plays about the same defensively.

UW can win a low scoring game with UNM. I can see them having the defense to stop the Lobos most of the night. But overall I still think the Lobos are a better team, more scoring options and a better coach.

by johnnycougar on Mar 18, 2010 4:40 PM PDT up reply actions

Indeed.

And a shiny new donkey for whoever brings me the head of Colonel Montoya.

True story.

When I lived in NM a dude couldn’t get tickets for the Olympics because he kept getting told he had to call the committee for his own country.

importance of early road games

Anyone know what the WSU schedule might look like next year? I hope there are some tough road games early like KSU this year and unline UW weak schedule full of home games. I’d like to get this young team out on the road and grow as a team to be at their best at the end of the year.

I've got my answer.

Two 14 seeds have won by seven points. That’s the most.

Ohio was a last-second shot from being up by twice that at the half. Goodness.

Spero Dedes is horrible

I can’t decide yet if he’s worse than James Brown. They must always send their worse PBP guys to No. Cal

I thought the committee was supposed to put people close to home

Instead Cal goes to Florida, Zags to Buffalo, Purdue to Spokane, Marquette to San Jose, etc., etc.

UW is one of the few teams that actually got within 1,000 miles of home

by Grady Clapp on Mar 18, 2010 5:46 PM PDT reply actions

but the huskies got the ball...

doesn’t that mean there is no shot clock violation?

by displacedcoug on Mar 18, 2010 5:48 PM PDT up reply actions

They didn't really establish possession

Couldn’t tell who caught the airball, but he sort of bobbled it. That means the shot clock violation stands.

Fun basketball

It’s fun to watch Butler, N. Iowa, and other teams that move the ball so easily. I know this is similar to what Bone’s teams can look like. I’m looking forward to see this soon.
