NCAA TOURNAMENT OPEN THREAD: Session 3
If you want to watch the games on CBS March Madness On Demand, click here.
I chose Northern Iowa to win this game because a friend of a friend went there. I dare any of the "mainstream media" sports sites to bring forth that kind of analysis.
Finally, a 1/16 game! This one may be closer than you think. And by closer, I mean less than a 20 point blowout.
A fun dose of Husky anti-fandom.
Peter King AND Jay Mariotti went to Ohio? They must teach a lot of arrogance in their journalism program.

Me too.
I have never wanted to be wrong in my bracket so badly.

I don't think either of these guys will beat New Mexico
by johnnycougar on Mar 18, 2010 4:23 PM PDT up reply actions
Well, I'm not totally sure why
I’ve been watching them all year, unfortunately having to live in this state, and they’re pretty good

I hate Bavasi, despite the fact that he GM'd a team I hate.
Even if he tried to destroy the Mariners, I cannot stand a human being that stupid.
Meanwhile, I had Zdrowiernscik for the opposite reason.
JZ does indeed seem like a smart dude.
I think his anointment in so much of the media as one of the best out there is a bit premature, but I certainly expect it to be deserved eventually.
After the previous regime
All he had to do was demonstrate a basic knowledge to be a genius.
Then again, his only what the hell move was the Morrow deal so far out of everything.
Wait until League is our closer because Aardsma's 2009 was a little fluky
Then he’ll look like a genius. Again.
It's going to happen
Aardsma isn’t recovered and League looks awesome. And by awesome I mean have you seen the new commercials?
Never looked at Aardsma's balls in play numbers.
And upon looking at them, I was surprised to see as luck as he was last year, he was much more unlucky in his career to that point.
Don't even get me started on that one
The first words out of Carroll’s mouth re: Whitehurst is “competition.” Essentially, he wants to run the Seahawks like USC. That’s great, except for the fact that EVERYONE’S second stringers in the NFL are significantly worse than their starters. You’re not recruiting 20 five-star recruits to your team every year. I mean, Mora kept promising changes last year. Want to know why he never made any? Because the second stringers were WAY worse than the crappy starters. It just doesn’t work this way in the NFL.
See? You got me started.
Oh, I'm with you
I checked out the FieldGulls reaction thread. HO-LY CRAP.
In two days he created a mass uproar. Trading Tapp for scraps and getting FLEECED by the Chargers was the last way I wanted to start the offseason.
I won't argue that
It’s basically been the talk of sports radio down here the last month, that teams they should be beating by 15 will keep it close.
I guess the main thing I’ve noticed is that they (cliche alert) play to the level of their competition. I’m actually a little more worried about them losing in the first game than beating Marquette or UW.
by johnnycougar on Mar 18, 2010 4:32 PM PDT up reply actions
Yeah, though they did lose to Oral Roberts

My actual basketball analysis
Is that both UW and Marquette have excellent perimeter defense. Holiday can match up on Hobson.
I'm curious to see the Holiday on Hayward matchup
I also want to see what Butler can do. I’m guessing QPon and Holiday trade off on these two
But UNM's only big weakness is something neither team can exploit
UNM can be beaten inside on the boards, and I’d give UW the edge in terms of doing that. UNM reminds me a lot of Cal, with athletic guards who get to the rim and streaky outside shooting. UNM also plays about the same defensively.
UW can win a low scoring game with UNM. I can see them having the defense to stop the Lobos most of the night. But overall I still think the Lobos are a better team, more scoring options and a better coach.

wait, hold up....
there’s a New Mexico?
Indeed.
And a shiny new donkey for whoever brings me the head of Colonel Montoya.

True story.
When I lived in NM a dude couldn’t get tickets for the Olympics because he kept getting told he had to call the committee for his own country.
UW-Marquette
Should be a blast to watch. I have high hopes
I wonder if they have those in the midwest
away from the ocean?

Anyone else notice Cousins didn't even move on that break?
He stood under the opposing basket and watched
The Ohio journalism/arrogance line

Husky game detayed because...
MBA, Venoy, and Isiah are filming another dance video
Nah
Romar just realized that this was a tough non-conference road game and decided to un-schedule it.

i think i can say without any amount of sarcasm
that “The Backup Plan” may be the best movie of all time.
and that the Tournament is definitely their target audience.
yep
and uw/marquette over 140
well, if kentucky covers, i'm 6 for 8 today
so i’m playing with house money. if i’m forced to watch this travesty, i might as well root against defense.
importance of early road games
Anyone know what the WSU schedule might look like next year? I hope there are some tough road games early like KSU this year and unline UW weak schedule full of home games. I’d like to get this young team out on the road and grow as a team to be at their best at the end of the year.
Well, we know Gonzaga and KSU are both coming to Pullman
Beyond that, it won’t be released for a while.
can't help but cheer for the Pac10
we need them to win to give our conference some respect now and next year.

I think he's trying.
Its coming out more Poendexter.

Dammit!
Now I’m rooting for UW! whats wrong with me?
i have no idea what a Wonton Taco is
but i’ll take 6
Ok seriously, am I crazy?
Isn’t the baby in the back wearing a Cougar jacket?
is he coming back next year?
he could be scary for us

everyone in america was screaming WOLF
and holiday still poked it out
I've got my answer.
Two 14 seeds have won by seven points. That’s the most.
Ohio was a last-second shot from being up by twice that at the half. Goodness.
First time I've seen that!

I was supposed to be 75% excited or something like that.
right?
by displacedcoug on Mar 18, 2010 5:35 PM PDT up reply actions
I don't think it means that
I just think the percentage is a degree of how pleasing the game should be to watch.

Spero Dedes is horrible
I can’t decide yet if he’s worse than James Brown. They must always send their worse PBP guys to No. Cal
I have no idea how Thomas gets shots like that off.
Also, people thinking Washington is going to take a big step back next year should probably think again.
Looks more like they could get better.
Especially if MBA develops like he has been.
by displacedcoug on Mar 18, 2010 5:42 PM PDT up reply actions
i have to like marquette
because they are not washington
I thought the committee was supposed to put people close to home
Instead Cal goes to Florida, Zags to Buffalo, Purdue to Spokane, Marquette to San Jose, etc., etc.
UW is one of the few teams that actually got within 1,000 miles of home
that was pretty awesome.
and it should have counted.
HOLY SHIT!
sorry for the swear, but holy shit!
but the huskies got the ball...
doesn’t that mean there is no shot clock violation?
by displacedcoug on Mar 18, 2010 5:48 PM PDT up reply actions
They didn't really establish possession
Couldn’t tell who caught the airball, but he sort of bobbled it. That means the shot clock violation stands.
MBA I believe.
I thought he had possession
by displacedcoug on Mar 18, 2010 5:50 PM PDT up reply actions
Uh, what?
And, uh, no. This is not what we want. Spontaneous swearing when a guy hits a 3/4 court shot? Sure. This? Not so much.
That was awesome.
Awesome that he made it. Awesome that he had to make it for nothing.
need to make a quick edit to my bracket
I meant to pick Ohio
Other than the Jeff Green year
has Georgetown done anything in the tournament in the last 25 years? ANYTHING?
Fun basketball
It’s fun to watch Butler, N. Iowa, and other teams that move the ball so easily. I know this is similar to what Bone’s teams can look like. I’m looking forward to see this soon.
Too bad Uni got in the Kansas bracket
I bet they could take Duke
2nd half starts out brilliantly
I love Marquette
This is awesome!
Keep it going Marquette!

How long would the Tourney take
If we let Gus do every game?
Worth it
is the coug band in Oklahoma?
Hey Baby!
Besides the G'town debacle
shaping up to be a pretty decent bracket day 1
georgetown's not out of it
i’m sure under rock ‘n jock rules, there’s a 13 point play somewhere.
for the hundredth time
this is a home game for an 11 seed
please
with the amount of coug and zag fans that bought tickets, UW would’ve been boo’d out of spokane.
I went to the games in Spokane a couple years ago when Oregon was there.
The entire arena was green and gold.

so when you're hurt and miss work
it won’t hurt to miss work
Yeah
They play with passion, they play hard (most of the time), and they are fun to watch.
I know exactly what you mean.
Its been really tough to hate them in this game.
by displacedcoug on Mar 18, 2010 6:42 PM PDT up reply actions
Call a technical!
They were not allowed to properly inbound the ball! It was a live ball situation!!!
I'm pretty sure they were on the court before the timeout...
I hear thats a technical foul.
wow that didnt work
Did I miss something or did the announcers?

sounds about right
UW never loses at home.
