Few a couple minutes ago
“Ok guys! Rick Jackson’s out. You can stop playing that pesky ‘defense’ now.”
Cuse 5th best FT rate defense against the 5th best FTR offense
So… the Zags are going to have to win by actually shooting the ball. And shooting threes, where they aren’t exactly St. Mary’s. I hope the game gets closer, but this isn’t a favorable matchup for GU.

You can teach a zone all day and it won't matter if your team doesn't show intensity
Looks like WSU all season.
We need to hire a zone intensity coach!

Just when I think the we need a ______ coach couldn't be funny anymore
It’s back with a vengeance
by Grady Clapp on Mar 21, 2010 10:13 AM PDT up reply actions
As blog moderators
You need a coach humor coach.
Sorry
Wasn’t meant to be a shot. Looked much more aggressive on reading than I meant it. Dang sarchasm on the internet.
No worries
I was just playing along with it
by Grady Clapp on Mar 21, 2010 11:01 AM PDT up reply actions
Zags 3pt defense continues to be hilariously awful
How on Earth did this team beat St. Mary’s twice?
Theres the slipper reference
Gus, that slipper isn’t fitting today, buddy
by Brian Floyd on Mar 21, 2010 10:30 AM PDT via mobile reply actions
GONZAGA! THE SLIPPER IS TOO TIGHT AND NEEDS TO BE EXCHANGED!
by Grady Clapp on Mar 21, 2010 10:33 AM PDT up reply actions
UNI stole the slipper
It was last seen on Ali Farokmanesh as he was rising and firing
by Brian Floyd on Mar 21, 2010 10:34 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions
Zags aren't losing the inside battle. They're just getting their asses kicked at the guard deep shot
Bouldin, Gray, Goodsen look like WSU passing back and forth and slowly backing up to shoot from beyond NBA 3 giving their lower two no second chance rebounds for scores. No passing into the soft spots of the zone.
They look like underachievers.
Is Cuse now the favorite?
Or Kentucky? Or ????
I think I like Cuse.
I want to see how OSU and WVU play their games
by Brian Floyd on Mar 21, 2010 10:41 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions
Ok
I hate Duke.
But they are the team I currently think is most likely to win the tournament.
by Grady Clapp on Mar 21, 2010 10:52 AM PDT up reply actions
This is true unfortunately
I really want to see how Duke, WVU, and OSU play today. I’m also waiting for a UK meltdown at some point
by Brian Floyd on Mar 21, 2010 10:54 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions
I don't see Duke winning it all.
In fact, I think they have a great chance to go down to Cal later this afternoon. Maybe, my Duke hatred is blinding me, but I would be shocked if they won it all.
by KirklandCoug on Mar 21, 2010 10:56 AM PDT up reply actions
I wouldn't be shocked if Cal won
If Duke goes cold from 3 they could lose to anyone, and Cal is severely underrated as an 8.
by Grady Clapp on Mar 21, 2010 10:59 AM PDT up reply actions
The Cal/Duke game is really an interesting one
Randle really is able to change the complexion of any game.
You could say the same things about Cal from three
If Cal gets hot from three all bets are off
by Brian Floyd on Mar 21, 2010 11:01 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions
Next year could be eerily similar to 2006-07 for WSU
Disappointing year with a bunch of sophomores the year before….
The first chance we have to make a statement? At home, against Gonzaga.
The similarities really are eerie
And I think we’ve got more talent, or at least potential, than we did that year
by Brian Floyd on Mar 21, 2010 10:52 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions
Just when I thought I was out...
You reel me back in.
Gonzaga has bench players that would start for WSU
Few chose to red shirt some talent that should be on the floor today. Bouldin, like Pargo, fizzled out his Senior year.
What Zag bench player would you start over one of our starters?
Olynyk at the 4 is the ONLY person I would start over one of ours.
The Zags’ redshirt guys aren’t any more prepared to play than our current freshmen.

Question
How hard will this group work and do they have the kind of chemistry and toughness to win? Weaver, Low, Cowgill group obviously had those things.
Thats a question we wont know until December
Most people outside of Pullman had no idea how good that team was going to be. This team has a ton of potential, we just have to wait and see
by Brian Floyd on Mar 21, 2010 10:59 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions
Until WSU can recruit a legitimate 5 we don't have a high ceiling
By the time they do, Casto will be graduated. Bennett had the opportunity to recruit and blew it at the 5 spot and outside of Casto blew it the past 2 seasons at the 4.
Casto isnt a 4 and never will be
by Brian Floyd on Mar 21, 2010 11:06 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions
Almost no team in the conference has a true 5
They are a rare breed. And your discounting growth of Motum or Bjorn into a legitimate 5.
Motum also cant be a 5
Your best bet on the roster is for Bjorn to put a ton of weight on
by Brian Floyd on Mar 21, 2010 11:07 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions
True, Motum isn't a traditional 5
But in Bone’s system he can be an effective inside presence. He can pass, seems to be able to run and move well, and compliments the wings. If he can grow in that way and find some rebounding, he can suffice as a post compliment to D.
Thats the thing
I don’t think he has the frame to bulk up. Casto also cannot play the 5. He needs to be the post presence because his face up game is not good. If he learns how to pass better and repost, he’ll work fine as the 5
by Brian Floyd on Mar 21, 2010 11:16 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions
Motum is our new Cowgill/Forest
If it works out right at least. Not a true post player, but a scrappy guy that can pass, shoot from the elbow (and with Motum maybe from beyond) and hustle.
But ideally Bjorn also puts on weight and becomes a good post option over the next two years. In two years if we have D, Motum, and Bjorn rotating as our posts we can be ok. They all bring something unique.
Off to the weight room for Motum and Bjornstad
They should live in the weight room until next year.
Motum obviously needs to get stronger but I don’t think he has the frame to get much bigger. His upper body is so small.
I’m not so worried about positions as much as I would like to see us more able to play physical.
We need a leader to step up
But I think we have guys that like each other, and that is the first step. Klay may never be a vocal leader, but I think he can lead by example. Remember that he and D were busy last summer away from campus. They are used to working over summer, but now can do it with teammates in Pullman.
Only time will tell how these guys react to the end of this year, but I give them at least a fighting chance to get over the hump.
Agree on the need for a leader
and with cougfan on it being a wait and see. It will be interesting to see how this spring plays out and whether it nets to a better team more capable of playing in Bone’s system.
Ugh, I can't handle four games at once right now.
I’m not equipped, I’ve lost my abilities in the last 36 hours.
Same here
I have Ohio State, Maryland, West Virginia, and Wisky. Maryland and Wisconsin are getting spanked a little bit right now. But its early.
by KirklandCoug on Mar 21, 2010 12:01 PM PDT up reply actions
Cornell is probably
every bit as good as Northern Iowa but I had Wisconsin. I have OSU, Maryland, and WV as well.
OSU is rolling now
I’m worried about Maryland… really worried about Wisconsin.
by Grady Clapp on Mar 21, 2010 12:53 PM PDT up reply actions
If the Terps could just get a couple rebounds they'll be fine.
Now Wisconsin, is in trouble.
by KirklandCoug on Mar 21, 2010 12:54 PM PDT up reply actions

Turner just put on a dribbling clinic
by Brian Floyd on Mar 21, 2010 1:06 PM PDT via mobile reply actions
I knew it was only a matter of time before I looked really dumb
Today is that day. Geez, Michigan State and Cornell.
Im with you
Didn’t expect that at all
by Brian Floyd on Mar 21, 2010 1:20 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions
"86% Free throw shooter."
“Which means you miss 14 times if you shoot 100.”
“I like the way you think of that!”
wut
If I had told you that Wisconsin was scoring 1.31 points per possession
You would have assumed Cornell was getting blown out. Instead, Cornell is up by 15 because the Big Red is scoring 1.65 points per possession!
Nantz just used the word clinic. That’s not even strong enough to describe what Cornell is doing right now.
I cannot believe theyre at 71 right now
by Brian Floyd on Mar 21, 2010 1:22 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions
I was listening to it in the car on the way home from church
And that is exactly what I thought. It was something like 43-31 and I thought, “Holy crap? Where is Wisconsin’s defense?”
With the tempo Wisc runs its ridiculous they can be doing this
I expect a race to 50 every time out
by Brian Floyd on Mar 21, 2010 1:24 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions
The general public will not appreciate the historic nature of what Cornell is doing to Wisconsin right now
It is pretty sad
I was frustrated they were only quoting Wiscs ppg allowed without explaining why it was so low
by Brian Floyd on Mar 21, 2010 1:29 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions
We know that, but sadly most dont
Nor do they understand tempo either
by Brian Floyd on Mar 21, 2010 1:34 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions
If you would have told me that Cornell Wisc would be the highest scoring game of the day
I would have smacked you right in the face.
The Big East is now 1-3 so far - Greg Gumble
Somewhere Dick Bennett is cussing out his TV
Or he’s on a golf course
by Brian Floyd on Mar 21, 2010 1:25 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions
If Cornell can shoot like this next week against Kentucky
They could give them a very good game.
Corny just pushed it to 20...
ridiculous…I’m embarassed for all of the big 10 right now.
The Big East is now 1-3 so far - Greg Gumble
Maybe not
That was a scary play though
by Brian Floyd on Mar 21, 2010 1:27 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions
Looked worse live than on replay
But was worth an intentional/flagrant call.
Yep
Live looked bad because I saw the contact and the other guy grabbed around the head

Mizzou needs something
A coach of some kind

83 points
You cannot be serious Cornell
by Brian Floyd on Mar 21, 2010 1:41 PM PDT via mobile reply actions
"Wisconsin: 2nd game allowing 80+ points"
That game was in OT and had 66 possessions. This game will have about 58.
CBS is robbing you by not letting you see Maryland's comeback.
It’s one of the best things I’ve watched this tournament.
I'm watching that game on MMOD.
With the Mizzou game on my TV

Amazing, spinning shot by Vazquez +1 to pull within 4.
Steal on the inbounds to get to get it back. Amazing inbounds play to set up a three.
1 point game.
Maryland takes the lead! What a finish in spokane.
Game of the day.
Maybe for the finish
I can’t get over Cornell
by Brian Floyd on Mar 21, 2010 1:45 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions
That pass nearly hit the other player in the head
What an ending it would have been to earhole a teammate with a pass as the clock runs out.
But I’ll take the shot instead.
From now on, I shall root for the underdog regardless of what my bracket says.
My bracket is done.
I never root for my bracket
It’s fun to fill out, but it’s more fun to root for great games and good finishes.
I also don’t wager much money on my bracket, as that means putting money on the backs of 18-22 year olds. Although, my one pay to enter work pool did go up to a whole 5 bucks this year.
I look at my enjoyment of games in this order.
Cougars winning a blowout that helps my bracket.
Cougars winning a blowout that hurts my bracket.
Cougars winning a close game that helps my bracket.
Cougars winning a close game that hurts my bracket.
Exciting upset result that helps my bracket.
Exciting chalk that helps my bracket.
Exciting upset that hurts my bracket.
Blow out upset upset that helps my bracket.
Exciting chalk that hurts my bracket.
Blow out chalk that hurts my bracket.
Cougars losing is pretty much all the same.
Cornell finished with 87
Incredible

Someone needs to buy Bob Huggins a suit
The track suit in the tourney just doesn’t look good.
looks like Ed O'Niel in Little Giants
Hope they run the Annexation of Puerto Rico on the Huskies next week.
I'd prefer they just lay down
But it should be an interesting game.
