GameThread: Washington State at Oregon

Cal beats Stanford, so the Cougs can earn the #7 seed in the Pac-10 tourney with a win (eighth place overall).

If the Cougs lose, they are the worst team in the conference, but not really (because we already beat Oregon once). And whichever school finishes last has strange distinction of having the most wins of any last place team in conference history. So there's that.

I hate Oregon. Let's finish this regular season off right.

Kevin Brill tonight

So those of you hoping for competent officiating will be sorely disappointed.

0 points in 4 minutes

This team couldn’t start a game off right if their lives depended on it

by Grady Clapp on Mar 6, 2010 5:14 PM PST reply actions

They could earlier

but couldnt finish.

Klay Thompson is my man crush

by crimson and gray on Mar 6, 2010 5:15 PM PST up reply actions

2 on Porter

I would kill to have him foul on, especially since he’s a 95% three-point shooter in the final three minutes and overtime

by Grady Clapp on Mar 6, 2010 5:20 PM PST reply actions

And the fact

he murdered us in Pullman

by cougfan45 on Mar 6, 2010 5:21 PM PST up reply actions

Klay 0 for 6 already

Awesome. I’m not much into Klay-bashing, but he’s making it really tough.

by Grady Clapp on Mar 6, 2010 5:21 PM PST reply actions

I have a question

If I watch this entire game, will watching Oregon’s bright yellow jersey’s make me go blind?

by Coug1990 on Mar 6, 2010 5:22 PM PST reply actions

Bud doesn't seem

very happy with the officiating. More than usual

by cougfan45 on Mar 6, 2010 5:23 PM PST reply actions

I just don't want the distinction of

finishing last in both football and basketball…

by cougfan45 on Mar 6, 2010 5:27 PM PST reply actions

Capers man just saggs off

and there packin the box on D, rather have a shooter in to help

by hightimes on Mar 6, 2010 5:34 PM PST reply actions

couldn't tell

if that was his knee giving out or he was hit in the face trying to get position to block out.

by BornCoug on Mar 6, 2010 5:35 PM PST up reply actions

I would go right down

the bench and see if somone can hit a jumper

by hightimes on Mar 6, 2010 5:36 PM PST reply actions

The Pit Crew is scum

I loooove that he’s still hitting free throws over it

by Grady Clapp on Mar 6, 2010 5:42 PM PST reply actions

HAHAHA.

“WE ARE CLASSY, WE ARE CLASSY”

Whatever. Haha.

by Valiance on Mar 6, 2010 5:43 PM PST reply actions

Watson really isn't that good.

He really needs to beef up and work on getting his free throw percentage over 50%

Klay Thompson is my man crush

by crimson and gray on Mar 6, 2010 5:49 PM PST reply actions

He has a ways to go but he is only a redshirt freshman.

Hopefully he puts on a lot of muscle over the next few years and learns to shoot from the line.

by Cougars Hunt and Kill on Mar 6, 2010 5:51 PM PST up reply actions

i'm still feeling good about this

we’re missing good shots. they’re taking bad ones.

the law of averages are in our favor.

by BigWood on Mar 6, 2010 5:50 PM PST reply actions

I am kinda enjoying

Hearing the Pit Crew trying to argue semantics with the refs (and obviously, because these are pac10 refs, the kids are right.

by Dids on Mar 6, 2010 5:53 PM PST reply actions

I'm so sick of the pitt crew

I want to mute the game

by Cougars Hunt and Kill on Mar 6, 2010 5:54 PM PST reply actions

I think we're about 0-20

in shots that could give us the lead in the last few games

by cougfan45 on Mar 6, 2010 5:56 PM PST reply actions

Freshmen gonna freshman

I’ll take Reggie going to the hoop slightly too early there to waiting around and jacking a 3. I’d at least prefer his mistakes be agressive

by Dids on Mar 6, 2010 5:59 PM PST up reply actions

why cappers with no shot clock

not like he is goin to hit a jumper !

by hightimes on Mar 6, 2010 5:58 PM PST reply actions

I'm not sure it was Oregon's good one

Their shooting was so ugly. But maybe that’s just normal, I haven’t seen many of their games.

by Dids on Mar 6, 2010 6:01 PM PST up reply actions

they took some awful awful shots

if they keep doing that, they’re going to keep missing.

we took a lot of good wide open shots. they just didn’t fall.

i think we’re in a good spot.

by BigWood on Mar 6, 2010 6:03 PM PST up reply actions

Casto

Although our team seems to have gotten progressively worse, Casto’s improvement over the last few weeks has been awesome to watch.

by Jimmy_Mac on Mar 6, 2010 6:00 PM PST reply actions

He wasn't right the first half of the year

He really has picked it up the last part of the season. No summer hoops this year I hope.

by BornCoug on Mar 6, 2010 6:01 PM PST up reply actions

Our defense has improved too

I was going to write a post… but it’s hard when we’re this burned out about the team

by Grady Clapp on Mar 6, 2010 6:02 PM PST up reply actions

Definitely

Still can’t stand Reggie’s consistent defensive lapses at 3 point range though

by Jimmy_Mac on Mar 6, 2010 6:03 PM PST up reply actions

Checking out the mountain man Beaver fan

by BornCoug on Mar 6, 2010 6:03 PM PST reply actions

SO, half time has arrived.

Last game of the regular season, so I am now curious. Next year, who are you guys predicting to be the Top 3 finishers?

by Valiance on Mar 6, 2010 6:04 PM PST reply actions

Yep - Nic Wise is kind of a big deal

Also, ASU loses Glasser and Boateng… but Sendek is building a consistent winner

by Grady Clapp on Mar 6, 2010 6:12 PM PST up reply actions

Problem is no one else gets much better either

Best recruiting classes belong to Arizona, UCLA, and Stanford of all places

by Grady Clapp on Mar 6, 2010 6:15 PM PST up reply actions

I guess in theory

We should be right in the conversation. Lose Nik but gain Simon and Aden.

by Grady Clapp on Mar 6, 2010 6:16 PM PST up reply actions

Agreed

They missed Brockman this year. They’ll miss Pondexter much more.

by cougfan45 on Mar 6, 2010 6:15 PM PST up reply actions

Of course you're factoring in how recruiting isn't over

And the UW is still in the market (some say leading) for two blue chip players who could easily replace a lot of Pondexter’s production.

by thecassino on Mar 6, 2010 6:17 PM PST up reply actions

Poor Klay.

What has happened to that kid.

by Valiance on Mar 6, 2010 6:20 PM PST reply actions

It has to be said

There is NO reason for Klay to be taking 1/3rd of our shots when he’s out on the floor (which he is, I’m not exaggerating). He just can’t shoot anymore. Sorry.

by Grady Clapp on Mar 6, 2010 6:21 PM PST reply actions

He's nearly identical to his freshman stats.

http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/players/81128

He’s just taking more shots to give him an overall more PPG. His 3-Pt has dropped off a bit but his FG% is nearly identical.

by CougM.E.93 on Mar 6, 2010 6:22 PM PST up reply actions

Who else should be shooting tho?

Only guy I would like to get more touches is Casto.

And look at how Nik’s percentage has dropped since he has started taking more shots.

by crimson and gray on Mar 6, 2010 6:24 PM PST up reply actions

To be fair

Most of the looks have been good (that last one was arguable) and nobody else is doing much. Which is to say I don’t really fault Klay as much as the offensive design and execution.

by Dids on Mar 6, 2010 6:23 PM PST up reply actions

That's fair

I’m not saying we forget Klay exists, just shift 5-10% of the shots that go to him.

by Grady Clapp on Mar 6, 2010 6:26 PM PST up reply actions

by hollyweirdcoug on Mar 6, 2010 6:27 PM PST up reply actions

Yes, but PPG isn't a great stat

Look, Klay’s awesome. We know that. But my point is he shouldn’t be taking the 33.3% of the team’s shots when he’s on the floor. 20-25% would be more reasonable right now.

Only 20 players in the entire nation put up a higher % of their team’s shots when they’re on the floor.

by Grady Clapp on Mar 6, 2010 6:30 PM PST up reply actions

depends on who is

on the floor- when it is Capers Casto Hartung Abe Watson as the alternative I think I have to disagree…

If you can't Go Cougs... don't go.

DeAngelo's Pac 10 PPG

9.2 PPG.

Sigh.

I don’t think this is going to end well.

by Valiance on Mar 6, 2010 6:27 PM PST reply actions

Unbelievable

Oregon isn’t that good. We shouldn’t be rolling over like this.

by Grady Clapp on Mar 6, 2010 6:27 PM PST reply actions

Could be worse

you could be a tarheel fan right now.

by hollyweirdcoug on Mar 6, 2010 6:37 PM PST up reply actions

I am enjoying that too

They improved by one conference game this year. Last year they had one of the youngest team in all of college basketball according to Kenpom (315th). This year they are 188th. They have gotten progressively worse like the Cougars this season.

by Coug1990 on Mar 6, 2010 6:44 PM PST up reply actions

That reminds me,

Tony Bennett took off his jacket during his game today and threw it across the court in complete frustration with a blocking foul near the end of the game.

I was like, HA!

This offseason is huge

Will be the difference in deciding whether the current Cougar basketball program turns into the current Cougar football program

by Grady Clapp on Mar 6, 2010 6:42 PM PST up reply actions

How much of this season can we realistically attribute to youth?

I can understand the inconsistencies, but it boggles my mind that this team has gotten so much worse as time goes on.

by Eramm on Mar 6, 2010 6:48 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

Thats the issue I'm having

we should be improving, not regressing. How much is Bone to blame?

I never watched the Sonics, mostly because I hate the NBA, but a team leaving is NEVER good. Just because you don’t like Soccer doesn’t mean that they should leave. The M’s and the Sounders can coexist.

He’s playing really well, his shots are within the offense, he’s not really forcing, they’re just not going down. This is not the same bad Klay game as other bad Klay games.

BFD. I'm watching this kid. He's slower than Bjornstadt if that's possible and half as sure footed.

He looks like a world beater next to a kid 80 lbs lighter and half a foot shorter.

He’s no Kevin Love.

High school refs are classic. The kid from Jackson drives, gets hacked to the floor and the ...

ref with the best view calls it out of bands for Jackson. The referee away from the ball makes the correct call of a personal on Kentwood.

Bunch of moron middle aged men.

by CougM.E.93 on Mar 6, 2010 7:13 PM PST reply actions

Looking at the lineups....

He’s easily going to be the biggest guy in the league next year

by Brian Floyd on Mar 6, 2010 7:29 PM PST up reply actions

The thing with Smith

Is Howland is so good with bigs I can see him getting way better. He’s been injured and is nowhere near in shape still

by Brian Floyd on Mar 6, 2010 7:37 PM PST up reply actions

No, but bigs like Love don't come around often

He’s still very good and has the size that can’t be taught. I’m actually more impressed with how improved his passing has gotten over the years.

by Brian Floyd on Mar 6, 2010 7:45 PM PST up reply actions

Keep thinking on that.

Let’s just target 7’ and up.

Chamberlain, Jabbar, Walton, Ewing, Olajuwan, Robinson, O’Neal, Parrish, Ralph Sampson, Artis Gilmore, Donaldson, Mark Eaton, Mutombo, Vlade Divac, Kevin Garnett, Yao Ming, Dirk Nowitzki, Greg Oden [when healthy], Kevin Duckworth, Sam Bowie, Brad Daugherty, etc., all 7 Feet to 7-5 and all NBA stars.

The problem is today we just aren’t seeing many players over 7’.

Current kids over 7’ playing well in the NCAA:

ACC [3 or 4 others as Freshmen w/ practically no minutes]
Alabi, Solomon, Florida State
Brian Zoubek, Duke
Tyler Zeller, UNC
Chas McFarland, WF

The 7’ center star isn’t as common as it was in the 70’s/80s/early 90s and has been replace by the 6’10/6’11" Center.

We aren’t recruiting above 6’9" and one of the two kids we don’t have a shot at.

Go take a look. We either let some kids go to free up some scholarships to recruit bigger out fo British Columbia, back East or wherever they grow or we will continue to get mowed down when Casto is not in the game.

Top 30 Washington prospects?
http://www.seatownsports.net/2010/02/top-30-high-school-basketball-players.html

Slim pickens for bigs.

Either Moos expands the Recruiting Scouts budget or WSU will continue to be bottom of the barrel.

by CougM.E.93 on Mar 6, 2010 11:46 PM PST up reply actions

Why expand the budget?

We have no scholarships to give. So right now, yes our recruiting will look bad. IF, and this is a big IF, there is attrition after the season, then you will see recruiting for 2011 heat up. At this point, though, we cannot offer kids when there is nothing to be offered.

I’d say the recruiting budget is pretty high judging from where we’ve brought players in from (NZ, AUS, Serbia, pretty much everywhere except WA). It is damn hard to find talented bigs and unless you’re a big name school, you’re gonna have to develop them yourself (see: Baynes, Aron). What we do have around here is a ton of talent. Doesn’t take a recruiting budget to be able to get into the Seattle area and recruit. There is two of the top guards in the nation there next year, and plenty of other guys to go around. If Bone can start getting after some of that talent, that’s where you’ll see the success

by Brian Floyd on Mar 7, 2010 12:25 PM PST up reply actions

I had no idea Boateng was that big

Smith is running up above 300 right now after that Patella injury. He should be down to 280 or less by next year
